If you’re a fan of classic Nintendo video game systems, then you’ll definitely want to check out these comfy looking plush cushions done up to look like these bits of gaming nostalgia.

Artist Lucy Sparrow of Felt Sew Good makes several cushions based on old Nintendo systems. For starters, theres a shiny Famicom controller, which looks like it would make a nice pillow behind your neck during long gaming sessions.

There’s also a Game Boy cushion as well as a Super Nintendo console along with a matching controller. What I love about these is that they’re not just tiny pillows – each one is quite substantial.

While those are all awesome, my favorite has to be the one based on the all-time classic controller from the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

Each cushion sells for £37 (~$59 USD) plus £7.50 (~$12 USD) for shipping to the U.S., and can be ordered over at Felt Sew Good’s online shop, where you can also find Lucy’s cool ZX Spectrum and Speak and Spell cushions. Cat ears not included.

Fans of the old Super Nintendo Entertainment System will immediately recognize the cartridge in the slot below as that of the classic The Legend of Zelda. But what’s cool about this custom-built arcade cabinet is that it plays any SNES cartridge, while looking awesome.

The cabinet was built by Reddit contributor Echoobrain, and it has a full arcade quality joystick and buttons built in. The system offers Link and Mario details on the side, along with a Triforce on the front – and it’s crowned with a proper Nintendo logo of course. While the arcade controller is limited to single-player gaming, there is a hidden controller in the front drawer that lets you play 2-player games too.

Echoobrain doesn’t say much more about the build, but it’s pretty great in my opinion. The only thing better would be if it could play ALL Nintendo games, not just the SNES – but sometimes less is more, and it’s not like the SNES didn’t have a ton of great games. Echoobrain does mention that he might add a small MAME system inside the cabinet that he could toggle to for other arcade games down the road though.

Sure, we are all used to playing video games with wireless controllers today, but back in the day you were forced to sit right in front of your console as if you yourself were attached to it, thanks to those pesky wires. Thanks to a simple mod, you no longer have to play games on your SNES as if you were in the dark ages.

Okay, simple is a relative term. Sure, it requires some basic modding skills, but it shouldn’t be too difficult. You’ll need to do a lot of fitting, wiring, and soldering work on your controller to get all the components to fit inside. You’ll be cramming in a power switch, emitter, and an LED power indicator.

If you play with your vintage console a lot, this should be well worth it so that you can gain some freedom. Check out more pics of this build over on imgur, and schematics which should work for the SNES, NES, N64 and SEGA Saturn at this link.

Supermandolini still sells these pins for €18 (~$24(USD)) each.

If you still have some Super Nintendo and Genesis cartridges but not their respective consoles, you can still enjoy the games stored within them and experience the ritual of cartridge blowing once again with the Retrode 2 USB adapter.

Aside from the slots for SNES and Genesis games, the Retrode 2 also has four controller ports, a pair each for both consoles. The device doesn’t need any driver so it should work with any operating system. However, like its predecessor the Retrode 2 will only let you access the data inside the cartridges; you’re going to need an SNES or Sega Genesis emulator before you can actually play your games. Although you can easily find free emulators online, the Retrode 2 would be a lot more useful if it already had emulators built-in, so so it could just be plug-and-play.

The Retrode 2 also has controller ports for SNES and Genesis controllers, which you can then map to play with your emulators. on your PC or Mac.

Press start on your browser and pre-order the Retrode 2 from Stone Age Gamer for $85 (USD). That seems like quite a lot to pay, when you can buy the Hyperkin RetroN 3, which is a complete emulator for SNES, NES and Genesis cartridges for just $70.

Well check out Mega Man X, which was just released for the iPhone and iPod Touch (sorry no iPad version yet.)
It’s not an exact port of the original Super Nintendo game, but it’s the best you’ll be able to do on your iPhone (unless you jailbreak it and run an SNES emulator). Mega Man X is available right now at the iTunes App Store for $4.99.

There have been numerous handhelds out there which can play games from the old 8-bit and 16-bit era consoles. Personally, I have the Dingoo A-320, which handles the job nicely. But there’s a new player in town which looks like it could be good, and it’s also cheap.

The PlayMore handheld can play games from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Nintendo NES/Famicom, SNES and Gameboy, GBC/GBA right out of the box. Games are played on a 2.8″ 300×240 resolution screen (or is that 320×240?) The system looks pretty nicely designed, and has both a D-Pad and analog stick, as well as small L and R shoulder buttons. It’s not clear how these are used with older console games, but I’m sure some hackers will get their hands on the PlayMore and get it emulating other systems which take advantage of these additional controls.

Not that you’re likely to use this thing as a media player, but the PlayMore also supports playback of a wide variety of audio and video file formats, and it even has a (craptastic – 0.3mp) camera built in. But you’re not buying this thing to take photos. You want to play some Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong Country, right? Well it should handle those just fine – assuming you know where to (ahem) get your hands on those game ROMs.

In terms of storage, the PlayMore has 4GB of on-board capacity, plus you can add up to 16GB with a microSD card. It’s also got an A/V out cable for hooking it up to a TV, and is charged via a standard mini-USB connector. And if you’re to believe the photo below, it’s even more fun when you’re drunk:

So now on to the best part. The PlayMore sells for just $57.88 (USD) over at ChinaVasion, so if you don’t already have a handheld retro emulator, this looks like one of the better deals out there. If you buy one, post a comment and let us know how it works for you!

Experienced shoppers buy their holiday gifts early, so if you’re looking for a unique and memorable gift for an old school gamer, you better get one of Retrozone’s Xmas cartridges. These are original cartridges for the NES and SNES (or Famicom and Super Famicom, if you want to be OG) with Christmas-themed games. Best of all, they have “colorful blinky lights” built-in!

The 8-bit NES Xmas cartridge contains a game called Fireplace Bash, a 4-player game where the objective is to bash everyone else’s fireplaces. Think Battle City but simpler.

The 16-bit SNES Xmas cartridge on the other hand has a game called Christmas Craze, which seems like a platformer.

The lights in both cartridges change depending on what’s happening in the games, but they’ll happily blink and shine for you even if you don’t play the games. You’ll still have to plug them in to their respective consoles though. Colorful blinky lights need power.

You can order the Xmas cartridges from Retrozone for $39 (USD) each. You can also have text displayed in the games and printed on an accompanying card for an additional $6. Not only are these unique yet affordable gifts, GameSniped says these are quickly becoming collector’s items, so buy them NAO.

Back in the days of the Super Nintendo, I think we can agree that many of the games weren’t worth a piss. The sports games were the worst when I was a kid. The only games that I ever seemed to find around were football or baseball video games that were boring. I was more the racing game type or Super Mario Bros. type.

If you have a bunch of old games that you really don’t like or just don’t work and you need to make something geeky, this is it. This urinal is made of old SNES cartridges and some other supplies. The finished product is a urinal that you can pee on.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The thing I see about this is that if you make a mistake sealing up all those gaps, you will end up with pee everywhere. It also looks like this urinal is very likely to overflow. A urinal overflowing on your shoes is one of the few things guys fear in the public restroom. You can make your own game urinal for about $250 and with eight hours of your time.

YouTube member richdegenhardt hacked an SNES controller so it can be used as a Bluetooth controller for any Android device, making it much easier to enter the Konami code on his Android phone. Rich can even remap the buttons to stand for any key on an Android keyboard, so it’ll work not just with NES or SNES games but also with the latest ones.

Rich used an Arduino Pro Mini 328 to translate the controller’s signals, which are then sent to the target device via a BlueSMiRF Gold Bluetooth module. Rich bundled both plus a battery to the back of the controller to make the whole setup more portable.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The best thing about this hack is that it doesn’t require Rich to root the Android device he wants to pair it with, which is really convenient. But that convenience comes at a price – there’s a bit of soldering and programming involved in this hack. If you think you’ve got the skills, check out Rich’s guide here.

Hyperkin has released several ways to play retro games at home, including their RetroN, which can play games from NES, SNES and Genesis. But their handhelds have only played NES games. Now, they’ve take wraps of a new portable that can actually play real SNES cartridges.

The new SupaBoy portable will accept Super Nintendo cartridges for play on its built-in 3.5-inch LCD screen. The handheld will have a D-pad and gameplay buttons on its face, as well as shoulder buttons. It also has ports for full-size SNES controllers and video and audio out so you can play on a TV.

IGN reports that the SupaBoy will hit this Summer, and at this point will only play U.S. cartridges. However, the prototype clearly shows a Super Famicom cart in the photo below, and the Hyperkin guys themselves say they’ve tested some Japanese carts, so I think the limitation is just NTSC, not U.S. specific. PAL gamers are out of luck for now.

The SupaBoy currently weighs in at 11.5 ounces (plus batteries and cartridge), and battery life for the handheld is expected to be around 5 to 5-1/2 hours. These specs could change in the final model, though. Expect more information over on the Hyperkin website soon.

Up until now the SNES mods we’ve featured involved stuffing PC guts inside the case. Instructables member vigothecarpathian also did the same to an old SNES, but he didn’t stop there – he also added several emulators and games to his console-turned-PC, so now he can play not just SNES but NES, N64, NEO GEO, MAME, Game Boy Advance, C64, Genesis games and more from just one console. I guess it’s more appropriate to call it a Super Entertainment System.

Vigothecarpathian (I wonder how long it’ll be before people start naming their kids Internet-style) used a mini ITX motherboard as the base for his mod. There are a lot of neat touches to this project, but probably the most important one is that the motherboard has an HDMI port, which means this retro all-in-one console plays nicely with today’s monitors and TVs. The NES controllers that came with the console can still be used as well, thanks to this converter. Additional controllers can be plugged in via USB. The MaLa frontend does a good job of presenting the emulators and games.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Vigo (can I call you Vigo?) used an SD-to-SATA adapter for this mod, but the adapter can’t handle SD cards with capacities larger than 16GB, so if you think you’re going to need more space, you might want to use an SSD instead. Check out Instructables for more info. Now I want to see a PS3 or Xbox 360 PC casemod that plays all games ever made ever.

Ah, SNES emulation. It’s like a rite of passage for any jailbroken system powerful enough to run it. I’m sure that when the PS6 is hacked in 2040, people will still install an SNES emulator on it. It’s human nature. Actually this isn’t the first time for SNES emulators to run on the PS3, but whereas before they ran on top of Linux, now the emulator is a standalone piece of software.

As you can see, it’s a port of the popular SNES emulator Snes9x. Currently the software lacks critical components, as in you can’t save yet and it has no UI whatsoever, but those things will be added sooner rather than later, as sure as the sun rises. The bottom line is that it works.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

A piece of advice: if you’re going to post a video of you doing shady stuff like this, make sure you don’t give away anything that might lead to your identity. But I’m sure you’ll be fine, Insaneskillz. Oh, and one more thing:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Yep, someone’s working on a Dreamcast emulator for the PS3. And you bet your excited little ass that someone out there is working on a PS2 emulator as well. You had a good four years, PS3. If you think you’re in trouble, just look at your little brother. The PSP’s been hacked to death, I’d only be half surprised if a PS3 emulator gets installed on it. Finally, don’t even bother asking how to jailbreak a PS3 or install the emulator.

Modder Vomitsaw had a cheap wooden end table and a old Super Nintendo lying around, so he put together this awesome mod he’s donating to the office break room.

The Super Nintable has a neatly-integrated SNES under the hood, with the cartridge port set nicely into the top of the table, and two controller ports in the front. The power cord and video cables emerge neatly out of the back edge of the table. Here’s a video clip of the table in “action”…

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Action packed, eh? I really like the slots for holding on to the cartridges, along with the metal chains to keep people from stealing the carts like the security system they use for ballpoint pens at the bank or the post office.

The only other thing I’d like to see is an LCD screen built into the surface of the Super Nintable so it could be completely self-contained.

I don’t know a lot of kids, but I’m betting they’d prefer to play on the iPhone, Nintendo DS or PSP rather than the SNES or NES. If they even know what those two are. But I think there’s still a lot of us 80s kids that’ll find Chinavision’s all-in-one gadget a hoot. It’s a media player that also has a built-in NES and SNES emulator.

Can you see that? A mile away? Yeah, I think that’s Nintendo’s lawyers. Before they get here, let’s rundown the specs and features of this device. It has a 7-inch LCD, A/V in and out connections, a USB port and even an SD card slot, so you’re pretty much covered there in terms of connections.

Yes, a couple of CDs containing hundreds of NES and SNES ROMs are also bundled. The Nintendo lawyers just put on their jetpacks, and are headed towards Chinavision’s headquarters. But hey, you’re on the Internet, so you can easily overtake them. You know that it’s dangerous to go alone, so take this device for $175 (USD). Warp to Chinavision’s website to order.

This time we have Sharon aka “LovableChevy” aka “The Bondo Queen” and her HandyDuo. Her handmade handheld plays original cartridges from both the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo.

What I really love about this handheld is the professional look about it. From the smooth lines of the white case to the well-placed buttons, D-pad and speakers, to the decals for the controls, it’s all very put together. Under the hood of the HandyDuo are components of a RetroDuo system with an integrated PSOne screen, and a pair of 4250 mAh batteries to juice it up. While its 2-pound plus heft might be considered a bit more “luggable” than portable, it still weighs less than most netbooks.

The latest in handheld emulators, the Letcool N350JP tries to one-up other portables by adding on something they don’t offer – a pair of external controllers for two-player fun.

The compact system comes with emulators for the Super Nintendo, NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, but if it’s anything like the other portable emulators out there, you can bet there will be more emulators, and probably a Linux build for it at some point. It’s also got a nice 3.5″ screen – making it significantly larger than, say, the Dingoo A320.

In addition to classic gameplay, the portable can play 8 different video file formats and 10 different audio formats, and offers a microSD card slot for expansion beyond the 4GB internal memory. It’s also got a video out, so you can connect it to your TV and play classic games on the big screen.

You can get your hands on the Letcool portable over at Chinavasion for $71.25 (USD). If you buy one, let us know how well it works!

They guys at Hyperkin keep outdoing themselves with their line of retro consoles. The latest console, called the Retro N 3, can play games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis in a single system.

Better yet, the Retro N 3 can play games from their original cartridges, rather than running emulated ROMs, so you can just dust off your old carts from the closet (or eBay) and play the originals as they were originally intended.

While the N 3 provides ports to connect controllers from each of the classic systems, each system also includes a pair of wireless controllers which sorta resemble the 6-button Genesis controller. The Retro N 3 is available in either red or grey color schemes, and can be ordered over at Hyperkin’s online store for $69.99 (USD).

Combining three of geekdom’s favorite technologies, here’s a nifty hack which allows you to play old SNES games on your iPad and control them with a Wii-mote.

In order to pull it off yourself, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPad, then install the latest version snes4iphone. The latest version (7.0) supports Wii-mote control via Bluetooth, so just pair it with your Wii-mote, and you should be all set.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Assuming you have a stand for your iPad, it’s just like having a portable Super Nintendo. Now all they have to do is figure out a way to emulate the Wii itself on the iPad… It’s probably powerful enough.
