I would imagine the people at Facebook weren’t happy when users of the social network began uploading huge amounts of photos using Instagram. Eventually, they gave in and bought Instagram outright for $1 billion to turn a competitor into an asset. You’d think with that purchase, they wouldn’t compete with themselves. You’d be wrong.

Facebook isn’t the type of company content to be outdone by other people’s apps, so the company launched a new app called Facebook Camera for the iOS platform. The new app promises to make using Facebook photos faster and easier. When the user launches the app, they will see the photos from the people on their friends list.

The app lets people swipe to see more of any album or an individual photo to enlarge it. It also allows you to share your own photos by uploading multiple images at one time rather than having to upload individual images. It also has basic tools for editing pictures and adding filters. It’s not as full featured as Instagram, but I still vote we call this app Facegram.

It’s just puzzling that Facebook would release this app so soon after buying Instagram. Perhaps this app was already in development long before the purchase was announced. If you want to check it out, you can grab Facebook Camera over on the App Store for free.

Before Facebook introduced the Timeline, every user had a Wall on their profiles where other users could leave messages or write down comments. A lot of people are crazy over Facebook- some figuratively, others literally – so it makes sense that the social network has spawned a lot of related sites, services, and phenomena.

The latest one is QRawr. It basically allows people to make virtual comments on real walls by slapping on these stickers that contain unique QR codes. (If they were allowed to scrawl their comments on the walls then that would be vandalism. Which I’m sure you already know.) In short, QRawr lets anyone transform any wall (or object) into a digital discussion wall.

People with iPhones can start commenting on QRawr-stickered walls right away by getting the QRawr app. Those with Android-powered devices will have to wait a while, though, as the developers’ Kickstarter project failed to get funded.

If you want to get your hands on some stickers, just tweet QRawr to your friends and they’ll be happy to send some over to you.

Parents worry a lot when their kids spend a lot of time on Facebook. There are online predators, scammers, and people who might be just out to hurt your kids.

Granted, these kind of people aren’t just on Facebook; they’re actually all over the web. The social network is just kind of a concern, because it’s a site that many of the younger ones frequent lately. Some go on Facebook for the connections or for the networking, but since they’re kids, you can expect them to go online a lot as well for the games. With this in the mind, the Kidsocial network geared specifically towards kids was born.

What makes it different from traditional social networks is that random people can’t just “friend” or add other people up if they don’t know each other in the real world. Kidsocial does this by generating “secret friendship codes they can pass out to their real-world friends at school or by text message.”

When the code is entered, the two kids are connected and their parents will automatically be informed about the new connection. This only applies to those under 13 years of age, though. Those who are already 13 and up can use the site just like Facebook.

Kidsocial isn’t just a social network either; it’s being branded as a social entertainment network, so you can expect a lot of media content on the site as well.

The Slingplayer is a very cool way to watch all the content from your local TV stations and networks no matter where you are. Slingbox and Slingplayer work together to place-shift your DVR content to you via the web from anywhere with a connection.

The catch so far has been that if you are on a computer where you can’t install the plugins and software you need for the Slingplayer to work, you were out of luck. Slingbox announced today a new version of the Slingplayer that will work on any computer with a web connection and a way to connect to Facebook.

The new Slingplayer for Facebook is out now, it will shoot your content out to the popular social network. That means any computer that supports and accesses Facebook will be usable to watch anything you have on your Slingbox. You must be using a Slingbox Pro-HD or Solo box for the Facebook player app to work.

The Tomodachi Block system is an interesting concept that allows you to stay connected with friends by using wooden blocks that act as tiny wooden displays. Remember the intro to the Brady Bunch where they are all in a grid and yet are seemingly interacting with each other? That could happen for real with this concept.

They come from the mind of Aya Shimada. When multiple Tomodachi Blocks of your friends are stacked or close together, you can have a group conversation. Each block is dedicated to one of your friends and features a speaker and a small screen. Sensors know when blocks are combined or stacked and so they can interact accordingly. Looks like this concept also uses your webcam as a block to connect you to your friends in the same way.

I wish that we could buy these today, but alas, it is just a concept for the moment. One that we hope will arrive on the market when it becomes possible to create.

Glassboard is a new mobile social network app made by Sepia Labs, and was built with control and privacy in mind. Glassboard has simple and sensible rules: only the person who created the “board” – think yahoogroups or Circles in Google+ – can invite or remove members as well as delete the whole board. If you’re not a member of the board, you won’t be able to browse or even search for it. In other words, it’s private by default.

Apart from that crucial difference, what you have to keep in mind is that Glassboard is meant for communication, so don’t expect to find games here. Glassboard also lets you temporarily turn off notifications for the whole app – it calls this feature Quiet Hours – as well as turn off notifications per board. Here’s a demo of the app:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As you may have realized by now, the great thing about Glassboard is that it’s fairly easy to manage and separate your contacts. No one has to know that you’re a member of other boards, or who the people in your other boards are. Also, I’m sure those of you who have Facebook accounts have at least one “friend” that you don’t really consider a friend, or even know personally. Then there are the ones that you do know but won’t stop posting lame or offensive things or keeps inviting you to play some game. With Glassboard, if you made the board you can easily evict someone out of it. That’s a lot more powerful than simply un-friending someone on Facebook. You can leave a board at anytime too.

I have a lot of friends who are smokers trying to quit. And it was through them that I first heard of the electronic cigarette.

I thought that it was a pretty cool innovation back then and I still do today. And e-cigarette maker Blu has just made things a whole lot cooler: by adding a social networking feature.

Its reach isn’t exactly as far and wide as Facebook’s, being limited to just 50 feet and all, but it’s still a pretty cool thing. Each pack of e-cigarettes comes with a reusable pack which also doubles as the charger. The soon-to-be released packs will detect the radio signals emitted by other Blu packs by e-smokers within the area and alert the owner by vibrating and flashing a blue light.

If the other smoker is someone you’d like to make some further connections with, just head on over with your Blu pack in tow and if the other party consents, you can exchange contact info and Facebook profile info via the Blu packs. Convenient, right?

The all-new “smart” packs will go on sale next month for $80 (USD).

The webcomic xkcd has just released a new version of the map of online communities. The word is that Farmville is taking over more and more of the world. Well, maybe not, but seriously, Facebook is taking up a lot of space.

A lot of thought went into their new world map, including “statistical inference, random sampling, non-random sampling, a 20,000-cell spreadsheet, emailing, cajoling, tea leaf reading, goat sacrifices” as well as just plain “making stuff up.” Now that’s my kind of cartography!

It’s probably best to view the map in its largest form here. You’ll be surprised at how many fun details there in there.

UK Design firms Industrial Facility and luckybite recently teamed up with Panasonic Japan’s Chief mobile device designer Madori Kuroda to create this prototype digital camera specifically catering to online social networking.

The Panasonic Pixi was designed for use with Mixi, which is Japan’s closest equivalent to MySpace. The device was conceived as a simplified interface for members to automatically send mobile phone images directly to a specific friend, diary or community on the popular social networking website.

By simply pressing on a single touch-sensitive icon, the software would take care of all the complications of establishing the proper connection and uploading the image(s) to Mixi.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The odd thing about the Pixi is that it’s really just a shell that sits around your current mobile phone. It leverages the phone’s already existing camera, LCD screen and internet connectivity to do all the hard work. The Pixi really just provides a simplified interface for users to share their content.

There’s no current plan to market the Pixi, but I thought the industrial design was compelling enough to warrant some discussion.
