If you’re like me, you’ve gotten in the habit of taking your iPad to bed, and using it to read, surf the web and play games. One of the most annoying things about the iPad in bed is trying to use it while you’re lying down. I’ve tried propping my iPad 2 up on a pillow, and on its Smart Cover, but it inevitably falls over or has me craning my neck at a weird angle. So if you’re looking for a solution for using your iPad 2 in bed (or on any other uneven surface), you might want to check out the Cushpad.

The Cushpad provides a soft and squishy resting place for your iPad 2, whether in bed, on your lap while on the couch, or on a table. It’s a simple idea – a trapezoidal pillow, covered with a satiny fabric, and a couple of small pillow-like grips to hold the iPad in place. Just slide your iPad into the soft ledges of the Cushpad, and it holds it nicely in place. It works in both landscape or portrait orientations, and smartly offers two different angles for horizontal usage. There’s also a handle on the back for easily carrying it around, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that with the iPad in place.

I recently got a chance to try a Cushpad with my iPad 2, and it really is helpful for viewing movies and playing games while lying in bed and hanging out on the sofa. I could also see it coming in handy on your lap while on an airplane or long train or bus trip. About the only thing I didn’t care for was that you really need to remove the Smart Cover in order for it to hold your iPad – although for quick usage, I figured out that you can set the iPad into the bottom ledge and flip the Smart Cover over the top of the Cushpad too. It’s just not as solid and stable as if you remove the cover and use both ledges. Still, it’s a minor complaint about an otherwise very handy little invention.

The Cushpad is available in green, blue, red, grey or black fabric, and the cover comes off for easy washing too. It sells for $34.99 (USD), but they’re offering an extra $5 discount if you “like” them over on Facebook first.

This Gumby-looking robot is the work of Harvard scientists, led by professor George M. Whitesides. It’s a flexible robot that can wiggle and worm through tight spaces. Like under your door, that tiny crack under your window pane, that bit of molding you’ve been meaning to fix – what the hell is that thing, and why is it spying on me? You would be forgiven for stomping it dead in it’s squirmy tracks since it has invaded your home and looks all creepy and worm-like.

These Harvard braniacs studied squids, starfish and other animals that lack hard skeletons in order to come up with this specimen. It’s basically a four-legged rubber robot that looks like drunk Gumby at a party. This soft, yet elastic robot took two months to construct and is just 5 inches long. The four legs can be separately controlled by pumping air into them, either manually or through a computer. This allows it to crawl and slither and creep. It should prove very useful once they manage to get it untethered from the power source.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It could come in handy in any situation that requires getting into a tight space. Think the rubble after an earthquake or even difficult terrain. Then, of course there are the spy capabilities I mentioned, where it could slide under a door and gather intel.

Here’s a video of an earlier incarnation of the soft-bodied robot being used to gently grip an egg:

You might recall a while back I mentioned the crazy fat Arkhippo for the iPhone 3G/3GS. The case makes the iPhone fat so it can sit on surfaces without having to hold it. The thick case is made from the same sort of material durable, flexible material as Crocs shoes and is definitely one of the less sexy cases I have seen.

If you like the idea of making your thin and cool iPhone 4 fat and ugly like a phone from the 90′s the Arkhippo is now available for you too. The iPhone 4 version of the case is offered in seven different colors. The iPhone just squeezes into the case and every port and button on the thing is covered.

Each of the cases sells for $24 (USD) and don’t even think about putting one of these in your pocket, since the case measures almost 2 inches thick. The good news is that it should offer up lots of padding if you drop your phone.

Ladies and gentlemen: World Peace is within our reach, thanks to d*light. Designed by Diana Lin, d*light is a “combination of ambient lighting and cushion”, a benevolent matrimony of woven polyester and SMD LEDs. It provides a soft light and just the right amount of warmth, such that even the Devil himself will repent and come back to the arms of the Maker after hugging d*light.

d*light can be plugged in via a 6-volt AC adapter, but it makes more sense to power it with 4 AA batteries, in which case it will bring endless joy and eternal hope for up to 4 hours. As proof of the messianic love power of the pillow, 5 d*lights were placed next to the remains of Stalin and Hitler. Here’s what happened to the two genocidal tyrants after a few minutes:

That’s right: they came back to life as a couple of peaceful, harmless, small talk-loving women. The holy pillow is available in Original White, Hot Sun Pink and Sunset Gold, and can be yours for $160 (USD) at the newly-opened Yanko Design Store. Praise d*light!

What better way could there be to protect your precious Apple iPhone from damage than to put it inside another slightly larger iPhone – one made from soft felt.

That’s exactly what you’ll get when you pick up one of these whimsical handmade mobile device cases that looks just like an iPhone. Each one is lovingly handstitched by L´atelier de Luluu, and made from multiple layers of thick protective felt to keep your gadgets good as new.

But as you can see from the photo below, this cushy case won’t just hold iPhones. From what I can tell, that’s some sort of LG Smartphone lurking inside there like a high-tech hermit crab that stole the shell off a prematurely deceased gadget. Or like Buffalo Bill wearing a victim’s skin in The Silence of the Lambs for you sickos out there.

And if you’d rather pull the old reverse-double-switcheroo, you could always cloak your iPhone inside this felt Samsung Instinct instead.

You can find these quirky iPhone cases and others over at L´atelier de Luluu over on Etsy.

That R2-D2 is one talented little droid. Not only can he project holographic distress messages from Princess Leia, he can grind pepper, play tunes, serve cookies, and keep your drinks cool, and now he can even help you wipe your butt.

According the the Japanese maker of this plush R2-D2, it’s designed to dispense “roll tissue”, which is a nice way of saying “toilet paper”. Measuring in at (8.66″ H x 7.87″ W x 4.92″ D) it’s a little big for conventional American T.P. rolls, there’s really no reason why you can’t use it with just about any paper product that comes on a roll.

So if your Star Wars themed bathroom is just dying for the perfect new accessory, you can pre-order an R2-D2 paper caddy over at NCSX for ¥2800 (appx. $33.90 USD).

There’s no reason that the pillows on your couch have to be square, round or rectangular. Why shouldn’t they reflect your Star Wars addiction like anything else?

These plush versions of classic characters from the Star Wars universe are just too cool. From the squishy R2-D2 to the scruffy Chewbacca and blobby-headed Boba Fett, you need these in your house.

At about 7-inches tall each, I guess they’re not quite big enough to serve as pillows, but they’re great as an accent on your sofa, bed or just lying around your room.

Even one Yoda gets.

The whole collection is available over on Entertainment Earth for about $13 a piece.

I was buzzing about over on the wonderful world of Etsy today, when I came across these absolutely awesome plush versions of popular portable electronic gadgets. French textile artist Kmila Rodz handcrafts these super special soft systems using felt, needle and thread, with a just a dash of love thrown in.

From the wonderfully whimsical folding Nintendo DS Lite (complete with stuffed stylus and a game of New Super Mario Bros. on the dual screens), to her squishy iPhone clone, I can’t decide which one I like the best. (I’m not sure what that plush Sushi roll is doing there, but it looks tasty alongside the iPhone).

Feeling retro? Kmila has also created this beautiful Nintendo Gameboy, playing a game of Tetris on its faux “LCD” screen. (There’s even a little Tetris “cartridge” sticking out of the back when you flip it over).

Want to get your grubby little hands on these wondrous plush playthings? You’d better head on over to Kmila’s Etsy shop before they’re all gone.

While there are many symbols of true geekdom, it’s possible that none is more iconic than the classic Casio calculator watch. There’s nothing that says “I still live in mom’s basement” more than a watch that can do math. But if you wear one of these, you probably can already calculate pi to 100 digits in your head, so what’s the point?

Now you can make the same fashion statement, without the need for all those pesky electronics. BraveMoonman has created these oh-so-awesome felt calculator watches so you can show your true self without worrying about batteries dying or LCD displays failing when you bump into a wall.

Each of these soft calculator bracelets is lovingly handstitched from felt and velcro, and they come in a variety of bright colors (I don’t know what to say about the hot pink), as well as the classic grey band.

As the Oakland, CA creator of these non-functional timepieces says: “If people ask you for the time, say ‘It’s time to look cool!’”. I say: “If people ask you how much 2 + 2 equals, tell them ‘higher than you can count. duh.’”. So what are you waiting for? Head on over to BraveMoonman’s Etsy Shop and wrap your wrist in one of these. Now.

Check out these fun Gameboy plush toys I came across in my recent Web travels. Featuring a whimsical, cartoony take on the classic hand-held gaming system, they’re the perfect gift for the Nintendo Fanboy or Fangirl in your life.

Created by Wisconsin crafter KungFuCowgirl, each of the squishy game systems has its own unique personality, thanks to the slight variations in each handmade Gameboy.

They measure in at just a wee-bit bigger than an original Gameboy and come in red, yellow, green, pink or teal. They cost just $14 bucks a piece (so why not buy a bunch?) You can find ‘em over on Etsy.

FruitShop’s Pod Driver flash drives look a whole heck of a lot like tiny iPods with faces. Thanks to their soft outer case, they contort to plug into your USB port and let you store all those files that you might not use a regular iPod for.

Each drive has a handy elastic strap attached for easy carrying, and is covered in a removable silicone case that’s soft to the touch. They come in three colors: black, white and pink, and should be available a little later this year. Pricing and an exact release date aren’t yet available.

Handcrafted by New Hampshire fabric artist Rapunzel’s Tower (aka “Punzie”), the pillows are pieced and stitched to give them the look of individual pixels from the classic ghosts of gaming past.

Unfortunately, this particular set of pillows (priced at $90) is already reserved for a special order, but you can surely order a custom set for yourself if you contact Punzie over on her Etsy page.
An artist going by the excellent screen name Kickass-Peanut created this soft, plush Xbox 360 console, which is certain to be unable to play those evil “M”-rated games. She even created a matching controller and memory stick for the soft, smiling system.

As an added bonus, the plush console is incapable of overheating and is guaranteed to never get a case of the dreaded Red Rings of Death. And even if the console was able to freeze, you could throw it at the wall without risk of injury.

In fact, the battery-operated Radiobox is made using similar materials to those you’d find in a beanbag chair. The radio features a soft, faux fabric exterior and is stuffed with those little pellets that make it nice and squshy. Even the controls are concealed behind the soft exterior. From what I can tell, the only exposed element that’s not soft to the touch is the radio’s metal speaker grill.

The Radiobox can be found online from Dutch retailer KadoCorner for €18,75 (which is about $26 bucks stateside.)
