The PS Vita recently launched in Japan with a bunch of games, but none of those games were old Sega classics like Sonic The Hedgehog. A developer has corrected Sony’s oversight and managed to get a Sega Genesis emulator running on the handheld, using the PlayStation Vita’s own PSP emulator. I guess that makes sense since the Sega Genesis emulator in question was originally made for the PSP.

It runs better than you might think despite being an emulator running within an emulator. It looks amazing in fact. The audio needs some work, but that should be fixed over time. Sony will probably kill this with an update at some point, but it is still pretty cool.

I’m anxious to see what else people can do with the PS Vita when it is available in all regions.

Back in my day, you were either Atari or Intellivision. The lines were clearly drawn. You chose your allegiance and you were loyal to that brand. Then at some point it was Nintendo versus Sega and so on. Nowadays, there’s no loyalty. We just love to play.

You have Sega games on Nintendo consoles, you can even play old Atari games on any console. Many of us have both a PS3 and an XBox 360. There’s no brand loyalty, just the love of games. However you can’t help thinking back to those days when something like this shows up. A Sega themed Wii? If you would have told me back then that this could happen, I would have laughed. But here we are.

This Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games bundle had to happen eventually. In case you’re wondering, this is the new version of the Wii. The Wii-Lite. (There’s no wi-fi and you can’t play Gamecube games).

They even make you do all of the work, providing a sticker sheet so that you can create your Sega themed Wii. Thanks Nintendo. I can already put stickers on things.

You get a blue Wii, a blue Wii Remote Plus, a blue Nunchuk, the game, and a sticker sheet. If you’re interested in this oddity, you can get it in Europe on November 18th for an unknown price.

When you start watching this video, you’re going to say to yourself, why am I watching a clip of the Jim Henson Google Doodle puppets speaking in Portuguese? And then you’ll turn on the closed captioning and realize that they’re actually talking about video games, and it’ll start to make just slightly more sense in the context of what is to follow.

Once you get past the slightly inappropriate Muppets, (or you just skip to about 0:38 in the clip), you’ll be treated to an awesome rendition of the classic Green Hill Zone theme song from the original Genesis/MegaDrive Sonic the Hedgehog, performed by musician Sonaje. Here, check it out:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

See, wasn’t that worth it? I especially love the fact that he’s not just playing the theme song on guitar and piano, but actually making the sound effects for Sonic grabbing up rings, jumping and spinning.

If you enjoyed the performance enough to put it on your iPod, you can grab an MP3 of the track here.

Here’s some news that Sonic fans will love. After many disappointing and flawed games, Sega appears to be going back to the character’s roots. This Sonic Generations footage looks not only playable, but fun.

I’ve played several Sonic games over the last several years. Or tried to anyway. They just lack the excitement and fun of the original Sonic games and they always seem like they were rushed into production too. Is it too much to ask to give us a good Sonic game? Well, it looks like we may finally have one after all these years, judging by this gameplay footage of Sonic Generations.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The only concern I would have is this: Hopefully these aren’t complete remakes of the original games. What we want is the old-school game play with some new elements added in. New areas to visit and new things to discover. Seeing the footage above definitely makes me want to take a closer look though.

I’m guessing that Sonic the Hedgehog was feeling jealous of Pac-Man and Mario having their own sugary treats, so he had to get into the candy-making action.

While I think that Sonic’s candies should look like gold rings, I’m guessing they thought a roll of Butter Rum LifeSavers would have been sort of lame, so they went ahead and made these mystical, magical Chaos Emerald candies instead. (Memo to self: call the LifeSavers folks with this idea.)

Each tin of Sonic candy comes in a tin that looks like Sonic’s spiky blue hair, and is loaded with apple and cherry flavored candies shaped like emeralds. It would be cool if they came in all the different emerald colors, but you’ll have to settle for red only. You can grab a tin over at fractalspin for $3.25 (USD). Or you could buy about 3 rolls of LifeSavers instead.

Mario has all the headlines this year for celebrating a notable milestone for longevity in the geeky world of video games. But Mario isn’t the only game character that has been around for a long time, Sonic has been gaming for 20 years now. My son loves Sonic the Hedgehog, and we have just about all of the Wii games and some DS games around here with the blue speedster on them.

Mad Catz has unveiled a cool new inductive charge station (PDF) for Nintendo Wii remotes. The station has Sonic standing there on his grassy knoll holding up two fingers to tell you the maximum controller occupancy for the charger.

The stand ships with a pair of rechargeable batteries and uses magnets to align the controllers for charging. You don’t even have to take the silicone case of your remotes to charge, and it will work with the Motion Plus accessories installed as well. You can find the limited edition charger over at Amazon for $39.99 (USD).

NKOK is releasing these The Sonic Speed Star and Knuckles Land Breaker R/C cars, based on the vehicles in Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing. Each one can reach speeds of up to 7 mph, and operate on separate frequencies so you can race against a friend. Plus, they both have working headlights so you can see where you’re going in case Dr. Eggman Robotnik is lurking in the dark.

You’ll be able to get the Sonic and Knuckles vehicles starting this month at Toys’R'Us and Sears Canada stores for $24.99 (USD) each.

While it’s not really an accurate reenactment of the way Sonic the Hedgehog plays, this slot car racing set still looks like it could be fun for at least 3 or 4 minutes.

The set comes with a pair of wired remote controls, and wheeled versions of Sonic and Tails to race around the 4-foot oval loop track. The guys over at Sonic fanblog Emerald Coast got their hands on a set, and weren’t that thrilled with how frequently Sonic goes flying off the rails though. Somehow Tails manages to stay on the track better. Go figure. I blame Dr. Robotnik.

The Super Sonic Racing System is available from UK retailer Play.com for £8.99 (appx. $15 USD). Frankly, I think this would have been way cooler if it had some crazy loops and corkscrews on the track. Oh well, what do you want for $15 bucks?

This portable gaming system looks a whole lot like Sonic The Hedgehog. So it’s a good thing that it actually plays a variety of classic SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive games.

Freetron’s FunPlay 20-in-1 not only can be connected to your television, but since it runs on 3-AAA batteries can be played on the road with portable DVD players (as long as they have a video input). The battery-operated circuit also makes this a perfect candidate for portable game system hackers – although the built-in 16-bit Genesis/Mega Drive emulator is limited to the 20 included games as far as I can tell.

Here’s a full list of included games: Sonic Blast, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Spinball, Sonic Triple Trouble, Alex Kidd High Tech World, Alex Kidd The Lost Stars, Altered Beast, Astro Warrior, Bomber Raid, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco The Tides of Time, Fantasy Zone, Golden Axe, Penguin Land, Psycho Fox, Quartet, Ristar, and Super Columns.

You can grab one of these over at DealExtreme for just under $15 (USD). With 20 fully licensed SEGA games for that price, this thing looks like a pretty great deal. I think I paid $159 bucks for my original Genesis, and that was before I bought a single game.

Of course, if you don’t need to take it on the road, and you’ve got a PS3 or Xbox 360, you owe it to yourself to check out Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection instead – which includes twice as many games for just $28 (USD).

Yep, there’s just something about those tiny, efficient vehicles that–no, you know what? There’s no reason to associate this Smart car with Sonic the Hedgehog other than the fact that the car has a Sonic wrap.

But maybe that’s the genius of Sega of France at work. Pair two seemingly unrelated things until we’re all talking about Sonic Unleashed. Damn! It’s working.

Run down in the prime of his life, it’s unknown why Sonic was wandering around this parking lot in the North of England. Police report a that a number of golden rings were found scattered across the parking lot, fueling speculation that foul play was involved. The driver of the Opel Corsa couldn’t be located after the accident, but a rotund, egg-shaped man was seen fleeing from the scene carrying a briefcase full of emeralds.

It’s a well-known fact that fans of Sega mascot Sonic the Hedgehog often need to haul things: rings, outdated Sega consoles, lunch, petitions about voice actors… and luckily, all of those items will fit into this sweet Sonic-themed tote bag (though maybe not all at once; the Dreamcast was pretty hefty).

This bag, available from fadingendlessly’s Etsy storefront, is made from retro Sonic fabric circa 1994 and sells for $25, which is not a bad price, unless you can a) sew and b) pop into your time machine and get some of this material for yourself. Not a Sonic fan? You might want to check out some of the other bags available, like this Star Wars bag.

Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean that you have to stop dressing like your favorite video game characters, does it?

Crafter BeBeBunBunBits (nope, I didn’t make that up) made these whimsical hats based on Sonic the Hedgehog and his video game pals, Tails and Amy Rose. But for some reason, Dr. Robotnik didn’t make it into the collection.

Each hat was handmade from colorful fleece, with gigantic googly machine-embroidered eyeballs.

You can find all three hats over at BeBeBunBunBits’s Etsy shop for about $25 each.

Sure, I might have found these hats a couple of days late for trick-or-treating, but you could still could draw plenty of stares walking into the office next week wearing one of these on your head. Me, I’m sticking with my Pac-Man headgear for now.

I just started playing Little Big Planet on my PS3, and while the built-in levels are truly a sight to behold, the really wondrous thing about the game is all of the community content that’s starting to surface. I was buzzing about the LBP world last night when I came across some great arcade classics, all brought to life with the amazing level builder in the game.

Here are some videos of my favorite game tributes so far:

You’ve gotta love Little Big Pac-Man (wokka-wokka-wokka):

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Even I could build square blocks with the level creation tools, but this Tetris level takes block-building it to the next level.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

This Dig-Dug level still needs a little work, but I just couldn’t leave Fygar and Pooka off the list:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

This Sonic The Hedgehog Green Hill Zone level really blew my mind. It’s even got the original game music and a Dr. Robotnik boss battle.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Of course, what retro game collection would be complete without Space Invaders?

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I’m just waiting for someone to figure out how to do Battlezone, Tempest or Pole Position, and I’ll be truly impressed.

Look at this playful shrinky plastic Sonic necklace from Etsy seller geekchicboutique. It’s very cool, but just because I have been charmed and distracted by it doesn’t mean I’ve forsaken my madcap Tetris obsession.

I mean, even though the elusive gold rings Sonic loves to collect have been thoughtfully included here doesn’t mean I’ve lost my focus. Although I think I can hear the happy chimes of jumping and collecting them right now… good times.

Is your obsession diluted when you have two things to obsess about? Does it count as an obsessions if it’s more than one thing? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Purchase this piece and see other fun things at the geekchicboutique shop.

In keeping with Apple’s DRM (Drinker’s Rights Management) policies, the iDrink opener will only open bottles which have been purchased from the iDrink store (99 cents each). In addition, the opener features a built-in battery pack that can only be changed by the manufacturer.

While Sonic hasn’t officially revealed whether or not they plan to sell these, I have it on good authority that they will initially sell for $5.99, then drop in price by $2.00 about 2 months after release.
