Craftsman’s press release also mentioned that the tool cabinet has a “built-in power charging station” for up to four devices, so I’m guessing there are four powered USB ports – or maybe even a whole power strip – somewhere on or in it. The Contour Powered Series Tool Storage will be available in the 2nd quarter of 2012. Hopefully mods of the cabinet will come soon after.

The boombox is powered by a Pyle Pro stereo amplifier. I could be going deaf, but I’m pretty sure Davis said the amp’s model was “PNA4″, a model that I am certain – based on my exhaustive 5-second research – does not exist. There is a Pyle Pro PTA4 stereo amp though. Bottom line, there’s a stereo amp inside. Davis then used second hand speakers that he got from a thrift shop and some plywood for the front panel. The Spinnaker speakers tower stand about 15 inches tall each, and while their name conjures images of the sail on a sailboat, while to me they look like the horns of a black rhinoceros to me. I suppose they could just as easily rename them “Black Rhino.” Either way, they look pretty cool.

Each speaker has front-facing tweeter and mid-range speakers, as well as a downward-facing subwoofer at the bottom. They offer wireless pairing with Bluetooth devices, and include a wireless remote which offers volume, track navigation and play/pause controls. Thanks to their dramatic design, the Spinnakers are a recipient of the 2012 CES Innovations Design and Engineering award.

Edifier hasn’t revealed much more in terms of specs, pricing, or availability, but will be showing off the Spinnaker speakers at CES this coming week, at which point more details will probably be revealed.

If a single AA battery is enough to power the speakers for up almost two days, a D cell battery can pull off one hell of a marathon – HiWave says one D cell will be enough to keep their module up for over 145 hours. Wow. The trick seems to be in the company’s proprietary amplifier chip, which they claim sips only 1/20th the power of other amplifiers. HiWave will have a demo unit at next year’s CES, and they expect consumer devices equipped with the power-sipping magic module to ship in the 2nd quarter of 2012.

The iNuke Boom measures 8ft x 4 ft, which is why the docked iPhone looks like a shirt tag in the pictures. The speaker weighs all of 700lbs, and is rated at 10,000W. Price? $30,000 (USD). iNuke Boom indeed.

For those who want to see and hear the iNuke Boom in action, Behringer will have a unit on display at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Something tells me you won’t have trouble finding their booth.

While this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a dock inspired by a ghetto blaster, I prefer the contemporary design of iHome’s boombox. While it mimics the lines of the classic luggable stereo, it boils them down to their bare essentials, creating a stereo that would look great in any moden decor.

Beyond its looks, the iP4 has a pair of 4″ carbon-composite woofers, and two 1″ ferro-fluid cooled tweeters, powered by a class D amp. It’s also got a 5-band graphic equalizer with an LCD screen, and an FM radio too. It also comes with a handy remote control, which magnetically attaches to the top of the boombox so you don’t lose it. True to its boombox roots, it’ll run on 6 “D” batteries if you prefer to travel fully cordless.

While I personally prefer the basic black/grey look of the standard version of the iP4, if you prefer something a bit more garish, you can also get it in hot pink. And when I say hot, I mean it.

I think if you had been walking around the streets of Harlem with one of these on your shoulders back in the 1980s, you probably would have been shot, then beaten with your pink boombox. But it’s a new millennium now, so you could give it a try now if you want. Or better yet, you might just want to keep the pink one in a teen girl’s bedroom instead.

So if you’re ready to put some boom into your dock, you can get your hands on the iHome iP4 boombox over at Urban Outfitters for $199 (USD).

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of info about how the models were converted into speakers. I do know that the sound system has a total power output of 200W, and that the TIE fighters each have a Yamaha 2¾-inch mid-range and 1 inch dome tweeter with built-in crossovers, while the Death Star hides a 6½-inch driver and was custom painted by NubGraffix.

Audiophiles will be quick to point out that a 2.1 sound system won’t give you the best sound quality (especially for games or movies) and will barely be enough to distract Yoda from his meditation. Hardcore Star Wars fans could also chastise this mod because the TIE fighters are larger than the Death Star, which is supposed to house thousands of the star fighters in its belly. Both are legitimate complaints, but I’m still very impressed with this mod, especially with regards to the integration of the audio components. According to Sony, these compact amplified speakers are supposed to fill every corner of your room with sound – despite their small diameter of just about 5.7 inches across.

The SRS-BTV25 is designed to play sound streamed from Bluetooth-enabled devices, while the RDP-V20iP is an iPhone/iPod dock/charger which can be controlled via the included remote control.

Both models feature a 2.2″ woofer and a 0.78″ tweeter. They each deliver 13W of sound. The RDP-V20IP can be powered up to 5 hours by rechargeable batteries. The SRS-BTV25 has audio jacks and a USB port to work with a variety of non-Apple devices. They’ll come in black, white, or red (only RDP-V20IP). There’s no word yet on pricing or the official release date.

One of the good things about these speakers is that they are somewhat portable, meaning that they don’t need to be plugged into a power socket. They get their power directly from your laptop’s USB port. They come in a bunch of different colors, including black, red, and pink. Obviously, their shape kind of negates their portability – and it’s not like you can wear them either.

The cheapest we’ve found the Gimme Tunes speakers is at Perpetual Kid for $29.99 (USD). They launched for about $40 last year at CES, but have come down in price at some places, just like last season’s shoes.

They’re called the boomCAN speakers, and while it’s slightly annoying to type the name, if you’re looking for something to power your smartphone, mp3 player, tablet, netbook, or laptop on the go, then these might be what you need. They come with USB rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which should provide up to 7 hours of continuous playback.

The cylindrical speakers themselves feature 40mm drivers and measure 2.5″ in height, 2″ in width, and look pretty portable. Scosche sells them for $24.99 each, so for two, you’ll spend about $50.

Unfortunately we don’t have any details regarding the specs of the Jerry Can speakers themselves; all that seller Reestore says is that they sell for £285 (~$470 USD), weigh about 55 lbs, and are available in a variety of colors. Kinda expensive for something that is recycled and looks recycled. Even more unfortunate if you do want these things, is that Reestore will only ship them within the UK, and doesn’t say if the price is for a single speaker or a pair. I guess you could always make your own for a whole lot less.

The vest is equipped with two amplified motorcycle speakers and an 8″ Boss Audio Bass900 subwoofer. It will probably melt your eardrums in an instant, but at least your back will get one hell of a massage. Andolina rigged a custom 10-cell rechargeable battery belt to power the whole thing.

I really want to see and hear this thing at work. If you have $900 (USD) to spare and a pair of high-quality ear plugs, head on to Andolina’s Etsy shop to get the Speaker Vest.

The TW-S7 speakers come in black or white colors and look like eggs. The coolest thing about the speakers isn’t the design though, it’s the fact that they are USB powered and still claim to produce 10W+10W worth of power. Since USB ports typically output only 2.5W of electricity, the speakers use their special “Super Charged Drive System” to boost the power.

Each of the speakers has a passive radiator for bass and a big 60mm ferrite magnet driver along with a high-frequency diffuser. These speakers promise some high-end quality. They launched in Japan back in April and are heading to the US on August 1 for $129.99 (USD). Nanu nanu.

With open-baffle acoustics inspired by a concert grand piano, these speakers are designed to disperse sound 360 degrees. They are made out wood, measure 43¾ inches in height, 18 inches in depth, and have a depth of 22 inches. Inside, they each have two 7-inch E7 reference drivers, a pair of high-frequency tweeters and the bass system has two 8-inch woofers.

With an average sensitivity of 95 dB and full-range frequency response from 20 Hz – 20kHz, they must sound great with recorded music. Still, nothing beats having ginormous speakers plugged into a guitar. Needless to say that your neighbors will hate you.

If you’ve got an extra $40,000 lying around, then you’d better act fast because these speakers are truly limited – with just 12 pairs being produced.

At first glance, you might think these little guys are Google Android mascots, but you’d be wrong. Look carefully, and you’ll notice that despite their striking resemblance to Google’s mascot, these guys seem to work for a company called “Gotge”, or is it “Gorge”? Maybe just “Go-ge”. Whichever it is, this is clearly not official Google merch.

But that doesn’t make these little speakers any less cute. Each one had a small full-range driver built into the bottom, and colorful LEDs around its neck which light up when the music is playing. Pushing the ‘droid’s head starts and stops the music, and turning it left or right adjusts the volume.

If you look carefully on the back, you’ll see a slot for a T-Flash(MicroSD) card, and the Android lookalike can play MP3 audio as well as connect to your PC or media player through its 3.5mm jack. There’s also a mini-USB port for battery charging or transferring data to the memory card. And if that’s not enough, they also have an FM radio built-in.

They’re available over at Now!Supplier for $29.90 (USD) each, but I can’t figure out how to pick between colors on their website. If you want to be sure you get the correct one, I suggest you check out ChinaGrabber, who offers them in individually in either green or copper for a few dollars more.

The speakers themselves deliver an output of about 2×7.5W, which isn’t half-bad compared to their diminutive size. The speakers will be able to run with an AC adapter or 4 AAA batteries, making them good on the road when there are no power plugs. They come with a USB port as well to charge other devices too, probably best saved for times when you’re plugged into AC.

They are going to be sold in Japan for about ¥8,000 ($99 USD). Not bad considering. The only thing that remains to be seen is if Logitech will end up suing Logitec over their name.

Fans of the shiny pirate explosive school of design will have more reason to love this device. It plays MP3 and WMA files from microSD & microSDHC cards as well as from USB drives, although without a monitor it’ll be quite hard to navigate through your files and folders. It also has a built-in radio, and if you already have an MP3 player you can use this as a speaker since it has a 3.5mm audio connector. It does have a rechargeable Lithium battery, so you can lob it and cue an explosive sound effect if you want.

You can get the USB Bombshell MP3 Player from Brando for $43 (USD). It’s quite the conversation piece. Especially with the TSA.

These speakers basically take the horn concept and shrinks it down to a compact desktop design that you can use with your computer. The body is made from teak wood, coupled with an acrylic horn. The speaker has a forward firing port, meaning you’ll be able to get lots of sound without using too much power. The speakers are also quite distinctive and unusual, which is a plus in my opinion.

For now, the Enhance speakers are just a concept, but there is always quite an interest for audiophile speakers, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them on the market at some point.

Since they were designed to work with Bluetooth, you just need to be in the range of the speakers to play your tunes. They were designed by Decoma, and distributed by FDV group in their Alt Lucialternative Line.

The Sensai speakers are available in dark or light wood and you can choose between white, red, green, or blue bulbs, and they all offer dimmers. They look like a pretty nice way of listening to music in rooms like the kitchen when you don’t want to get out the full-on dock.
