Happenings in real life will never be as good or magical as the scenes you might see in movies for many reasons. One of these is that we can’t cue someone in the background to play some gushy love song or sad melody when something romantic or particularly tragic happens. Or can we?

That’s basically what the Sonicwalk allows you to do. It’s a backpack-slash-speaker that will let you play your favorite tunes or key background music wherever and whenever, as long as you’ve got it slung over your shoulders.

The Sonicwalk has two built-in speakers in its straps and hooks up easily with most mobile phones or MP3 players. It’s also got a small LED strip on the back to help make you more visible at night.

Just hit play, adjust the volume on the straps, and do whatever it is you were planning to do – like taking a hike, proposing to someone, or having a romantic outdoor picnic – with your very own soundtrack playing in the background.

The Sonicwalk is available for pre-order from Firebox for £89.99 (~$143 USD).

Are you looking for a way to let the world know that you can’t sing but you don’t care anyway? There’s a stand for that. The Karaoke Anywhere for the iPad 2 is basically a speaker with two microphone inputs, allowing you and a friend to assault ears anywhere there’s an AC outlet.

The stand itself can be adjusted from a horizontal position up to a 75° angle. Below there’s a 10W speaker with knobs for volume and echo in front. I don’t know what the third knob does, but that’s not the strangest thing about this product. Watch the video to see what I mean.

Does that sheep shearing game only work if you have the stand? Do you have to play the game before you can sing? So many questions, only one way to find out. Take one for the team and order the Karaoke Anywhere stand from Japan Trend Shop. $178(USD) gets you the stand, an AC adapter and two microphones. Murder possibly included.

Cheap speaker docks for your mobile device might do the trick for a while, but sooner or later you’ll want a solution that looks good and produces great sound. The new CeraAIR Two speakers are quite fetching, and they are AirPlay compatible, so you can stream music wirelessly from your iOS device or via iTunes. Plus, they seem to have solid audio specs.

The CeraAIR Two speakers can be mounted either horizontally or vertically on your walls. A Class-D amplifier drives the two bass/midrange speakers with 64 watts each and the two tweeters with 32 watts each, so it’s more than enough to fill up your room with music. The speaker also has a subwoofer out if you crave extra bass. Is also plays Internet Radio and digital audio files wirelessly or through a wired Ethernet connection. Total dimensions for the speaker are appx. 23″(w) x 6″(h) x 6″(d).

The CeraAIR Two speaker isn’t cheap, though. It retails for €599 (~$780 USD) and is available in silver, black, gold, high-gloss white, high-gloss black and custom RAL colors upon request over at Ceratec Direct.

Your headphones are great, but they just aren’t loud enough for when you want to share a cool song that you’re listening to, or for when you have an incessant need to incessantly annoy your incessantly irritable friend with a good dose of Kelly Clarkson. The Zumreed X2 Hybrid Headphones solve all of these problems, and in return, increase those having to do with your ability to manage fiscal responsibility. These geeky headphones actually double as speakers, so you can listen to your music and force others to enjoy it with you.

The Zumreed X2 Hybrid Headphones have a lithium-ion battery that will give you a bit over four hours of speaker time, and can be recharged via a USB cable in just under an hour. The headphones themselves are noise canceling, and of overall impressive quality. Because of this, and the fact that they are also speakers, these headphones cost $159.99(USD). Kids, start saving your pennies, because you’re buying me these headphones. “Sir, you were supposed to tell us about your career.” What? “It’s career day. This is an elementary school.” Wait, I don’t even have a kid – how did I get here? Can I adopt one? I actually have a presentation I could give – “You should leave now.”

Headphones are not often as unique as the Zumreed X2 Hybrids, so you should get yours and distinguish yourself from that crowd of people who aren’t as cool as you. If you’d like to pick up a pair of the Zumreed X2′s, jump on over to Audiocubes. If you’re looking for some more geeky headphones, check out the Klipsch M40 Headphones and the Koss Porta Pro Headset.

These cubic speakers and clocks remind me of the awe-inspiring Borg Cube from Star Trek: The Next Generation – only much smaller. Whatever these cubes remind you of, they are certainly stylish and distinctive.

Craftsman’s press release also mentioned that the tool cabinet has a “built-in power charging station” for up to four devices, so I’m guessing there are four powered USB ports – or maybe even a whole power strip – somewhere on or in it. The Contour Powered Series Tool Storage will be available in the 2nd quarter of 2012. Hopefully mods of the cabinet will come soon after.

Floyd Davis IV makes Gentleman’s Boomboxes – sound systems out of old suitcases and other types of luggage. If the idea sounds familiar, it’s because there’s something exactly like it – though Davis claims that the idea was stolen from him. Oooooh, intrigue. You’d think that he’d be more protective with his ideas because of what happened, but Davis just did the opposite. He went on Craftsman’s web show and demonstrated his build process. But instead of using luggage, Davis built a boombox out of a toolbox.

The boombox is powered by a Pyle Pro stereo amplifier. I could be going deaf, but I’m pretty sure Davis said the amp’s model was “PNA4″, a model that I am certain – based on my exhaustive 5-second research – does not exist. There is a Pyle Pro PTA4 stereo amp though. Bottom line, there’s a stereo amp inside. Davis then used second hand speakers that he got from a thrift shop and some plywood for the front panel. Watch the video below for the full build and some witty banter:

So what are you waiting for? Go grab your stuff, tools, things and ideas and make your own toolbox boombox. Check out Floyd’s website if you want to see his Gentleman’s Boomboxes. As far as I know, he doesn’t have an online store for his products, so if you want to order or commission your own boombox your best bet is to contact him. I bet you’ll have a fun conversation.

If you’re in the market for some new speakers for your desktop, and don’t want the same old boring boxy plastic things, you might want to check out these unusual speakers from Edifier.

The Spinnaker speakers tower stand about 15 inches tall each, and while their name conjures images of the sail on a sailboat, while to me they look like the horns of a black rhinoceros to me. I suppose they could just as easily rename them “Black Rhino.” Either way, they look pretty cool.

Each speaker has front-facing tweeter and mid-range speakers, as well as a downward-facing subwoofer at the bottom. They offer wireless pairing with Bluetooth devices, and include a wireless remote which offers volume, track navigation and play/pause controls. Thanks to their dramatic design, the Spinnakers are a recipient of the 2012 CES Innovations Design and Engineering award.

Edifier hasn’t revealed much more in terms of specs, pricing, or availability, but will be showing off the Spinnaker speakers at CES this coming week, at which point more details will probably be revealed.

Many Bluetooth speakers have internal batteries that last up to 10 hours. Pretty decent right? But a company called HiWave claims they can do muuuuch better. They have developed a wireless speaker module that can last – yeah, what I said on the title.

If a single AA battery is enough to power the speakers for up almost two days, a D cell battery can pull off one hell of a marathon – HiWave says one D cell will be enough to keep their module up for over 145 hours. Wow. The trick seems to be in the company’s proprietary amplifier chip, which they claim sips only 1/20th the power of other amplifiers. HiWave will have a demo unit at next year’s CES, and they expect consumer devices equipped with the power-sipping magic module to ship in the 2nd quarter of 2012.

If you haven’t already bought one of the million and one other iPhone/iPod docking stereos out there, you might want to check out this one. iHome’s iP4 stereo looks just like a classic boombox, but with an iOS dock in place of a cassette player.

While this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a dock inspired by a ghetto blaster, I prefer the contemporary design of iHome’s boombox. While it mimics the lines of the classic luggable stereo, it boils them down to their bare essentials, creating a stereo that would look great in any moden decor.

Beyond its looks, the iP4 has a pair of 4″ carbon-composite woofers, and two 1″ ferro-fluid cooled tweeters, powered by a class D amp. It’s also got a 5-band graphic equalizer with an LCD screen, and an FM radio too. It also comes with a handy remote control, which magnetically attaches to the top of the boombox so you don’t lose it. True to its boombox roots, it’ll run on 6 “D” batteries if you prefer to travel fully cordless.

While I personally prefer the basic black/grey look of the standard version of the iP4, if you prefer something a bit more garish, you can also get it in hot pink. And when I say hot, I mean it.

I think if you had been walking around the streets of Harlem with one of these on your shoulders back in the 1980s, you probably would have been shot, then beaten with your pink boombox. But it’s a new millennium now, so you could give it a try now if you want. Or better yet, you might just want to keep the pink one in a teen girl’s bedroom instead.

So if you’re ready to put some boom into your dock, you can get your hands on the iHome iP4 boombox over at Urban Outfitters for $199 (USD).

Luke, these are your speakers. Major League Mods – who made the projector equipped R2-D2 Xbox 360 casemod – showed off this Star Wars themed sound system at the recently concluded New York Comic-Con. It has two TIE fighter speakers and a Darth Vader bust converted into an iPhone dock. But the pièce de résistance is the Death Star subwoofer. Rumor has it that it has a knob to control its superlaser.

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of info about how the models were converted into speakers.
Audiophiles will be quick to point out that a 2.1 sound system won’t give you the best sound quality (especially for games or movies) and will barely be enough to distract Yoda from his meditation. Hardcore Star Wars fans could also chastise this mod because the TIE fighters are larger than the Death Star, which is supposed to house thousands of the star fighters in its belly. Both are legitimate complaints, but I’m still very impressed with this mod, especially with regards to the integration of the audio components. You’ll barely notice that they’re speakers unless you look closely. Check out Major League Mods’ Photobucket account for high-res pics.

There are sound systems, and then there are monstrous sound systems. This one definitely falls into the latter category. In the words of immortal loud band AC/DC: If you see the SoundTank rolling into your neighborhood, “lock up your daughter, lock up your wife, lock up your back door and run for your life”. And for the love of God, cover your ears.

Nik Nowak’s concept sound vehicle, dubbed the Panzer Soundtank combines an army tank-looking machine, some speakers and drum machines for a vehicle that will rock you like a hurricane. Inside of this beast you’ll find a seat and all the DJ equipment necessary to rock a party.

So apparently we will soon be seeing DJ wars fought in our streets as other DJs build their own tanks and unleash them. We can expect a lot of collateral ear damage, but what the hell.

The Sony Circle Sound speaker is supposed to deliver 360-degree sound from a single speaker. The compact, spherical units were revealed at the IFA2011 fair and there are two models to choose from: the SRS-BTV25 and RDP-V20iP.

According to Sony, these compact amplified speakers are supposed to fill every corner of your room with sound – despite their small diameter of just about 5.7 inches across.

The SRS-BTV25 is designed to play sound streamed from Bluetooth-enabled devices, while the RDP-V20iP is an iPhone/iPod dock/charger which can be controlled via the included remote control.

Both models feature a 2.2″ woofer and a 0.78″ tweeter. They each deliver 13W of sound. The RDP-V20IP can be powered up to 5 hours by rechargeable batteries. The SRS-BTV25 has audio jacks and a USB port to work with a variety of non-Apple devices. They’ll come in black, white, or red (only RDP-V20IP). There’s no word yet on pricing or the official release date.

I’ve seen speakers come in a bunch of different shapes, but stiletto heels? While these Gimme Tunes speakers aren’t a new product, they are certainly distinctive, and a must for every fashion victim. The only thing missing is a brand name on them, like Jimmy Choo or Christian Louboutin.

One of the good things about these speakers is that they are somewhat portable, meaning that they don’t need to be plugged into a power socket. They get their power directly from your laptop’s USB port. They come in a bunch of different colors, including black, red, and pink. Obviously, their shape kind of negates their portability – and it’s not like you can wear them either.

The cheapest we’ve found the Gimme Tunes speakers is at Perpetual Kid for $29.99 (USD). They launched for about $40 last year at CES, but have come down in price at some places, just like last season’s shoes.

While I can’t say for sure that I will never use portable speakers on my laptop or tablets, I probably won’t since I prefer using hi-fi headphones instead. But if you prefer to share your sound on the go, these portable speakers from Scosche have an interesting design and look pretty unique.

They’re called the boomCAN speakers, and while it’s slightly annoying to type the name, if you’re looking for something to power your smartphone, mp3 player, tablet, netbook, or laptop on the go, then these might be what you need. They come with USB rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which should provide up to 7 hours of continuous playback.

The cylindrical speakers themselves feature 40mm drivers and measure 2.5″ in height, 2″ in width, and look pretty portable. Scosche sells them for $24.99 each, so for two, you’ll spend about $50.

Unfortunately we don’t have any details regarding the specs of the Jerry Can speakers themselves; all that seller Reestore says is that they sell for £285 (~$470 USD), weigh about 55 lbs, and are available in a variety of colors. Kinda expensive for something that is recycled and looks recycled. Even more unfortunate if you do want these things, is that Reestore will only ship them within the UK, and doesn’t say if the price is for a single speaker or a pair. I guess you could always make your own for a whole lot less.

It will probably melt your eardrums in an instant, but at least your back will get one hell of a massage. Andolina rigged a custom 10-cell rechargeable battery belt to power the whole thing.

I really want to see and hear this thing at work. If you have $900 (USD) to spare and a pair of high-quality ear plugs, head on to Andolina’s Etsy shop to get the Speaker Vest.

When I was really small, my favorite show was Mork and Mindy. I once almost drowned trying to drink milk upside down on the couch. Looking back, it was a very weird show. I do recall that Mork was hatched from an egg, and his spaceship looked like an egg too. If there really were an Ork, the Olasonic TW-S7 speakers would be the most popular speakers on the planet.

The TW-S7 speakers come in black or white colors and look like eggs. The coolest thing about the speakers isn’t the design though, it’s the fact that they are USB powered and still claim to produce 10W+10W worth of power. Since USB ports typically output only 2.5W of electricity, the speakers use their special “Super Charged Drive System” to boost the power.

Each of the speakers has a passive radiator for bass and a big 60mm ferrite magnet driver along with a high-frequency diffuser. These speakers promise some high-end quality. They launched in Japan back in April and are heading to the US on August 1 for $129.99 (USD). Nanu nanu.
