As expected, some new solid-state drives are being showcased at this week’s CES. Micron was the first to show things off with their RealSSD C400 drives – based upon a 25-nanometer NAND flash die-based drive.

These new drives will offer performance that could be nearly 30% faster than previous SSDs, and SSDs were already fast. The new RealSSD C400 will come in 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch sizes, with storage ranging from 64GB to 512GB.

Ever since I opened up my MacBook Pro 17 on Christmas Day, I’ve been thinking about upgrading to add an extra SSD drive. However, high costs and these speedy upcoming 25-nanometer drives stopped me from doing so in December. Expect blindingly fast booting speeds from these drives when they arrive.

Mass production is expected to begin in early February, 2011, and Micron will sell these as part as the Crucial drive family in the first quarter of 2011.

The test pits the Optimus 2X and its zippy dual-core Tegra 2 processor against the iPhone 4 and its 6+ month old A4 CPU. I’m not sure if the page rendering improvements in the Optimus 2X come from the faster CPU or the GPU differences, but either way, it’s clearly much faster at rendering web pages. See for yourself:

Never mind the fact that the LG phone is running Flash 10.1, so Apple’s position that Flash would weigh down the iPhone really is a little questionable, IMHO. I’m still convinced it’s just due to a political battle between Apple and Adobe.

I expect to get my hands on LG’s new mobile handsets at CES this week, and will let you guys know how things perform up close and personal.

For safety’s sake, a Segway tops out at 12.5 miles per hour. While that doesn’t sound that fast, if you’ve ever been on one of these self-balancing contraptions, you know that actually seems mighty fast when it’s just that tiny platform between you, the ground, and those oncoming cars. Well, someone over in Europe has decided to pimp out their Segway, and managed to get it all the way up to 40km/h (appx. 25 mph).

In order to achieve top speed, the modders had to replace the Segway’s standard wheels with much larger ones. They actually look like wagon wheels to me, but once it gets going, this thing is much faster than an old horse and buggy. I’m not sure what other modifications were necessary to break the Segway’s speed limiting circuitry, but it actually looks surprisingly stable at top speed. Here’s a video of the Super Segway tearing up the roads.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

While that’s about as fast as you can make a Segway go with its stock motors, I’d like to see how fast someone could get one to go if they installed a jet engine or something with a bit more oomph.

A pair of designers, Jae-yun Kim & Jong-Su Lee, have come up with a speed bump that actually knows and rewards you if you’re obeying speed limits. Vehicles who just gun it upon driving over the speed bump will encounter a normal speed bump, but those who do slow down to below 30 km/h (about 19 mi/h) will be given milk & cookies and a pat on the back. No actually the speed bump will flatten, i.e. disappear, for vehicles who have already reduced their speed.

Since it’s more than just a lump of concrete with black and yellow paint, this smart speed bump will surely be more expensive. But personally I think it’s worth it. Even if it doesn’t give pats on the back. Not only will this device motivate people to drive safely, it will also lead to less road accidents, especially in places where it rains or snows a lot.

There are plenty of replacement cases out there for the Nintendo DS Lite, but this one has a nifty trick up its sleeve.

The new XCM Hyper Gear case for the DS Lite not only gives your handheld a new look, it turbocharges your games. See that little switch that says “N”, “1.4X” and “1.7X” in the bottom right corner? Just flip it, and your DS Lite will run at 140% or 170% of its normal speed. Presumably, it’s safe to overclock your DS Lite, but it’ll probably end up draining your battery like mad.

Now keep in mind that overclocking a handheld like the DS Lite actually speeds up your games, graphics and audio. To give you an idea of what that might look and sound like, check out this video of another speed-hacked DS Lite:

XCM expects to release the Hyper Gear case in the next few weeks, and you’ll be able to find it at online modding retailers including Extreme Mods and Total Console.

Pasadena’s Eureka Aerospace has developed high-power microwave-based system that can be fired at a specific car and kill its electrical system in an instant. The prototype system can fire a targeted 50 nanosecond burst from as much as 50 feet away, completely frying the target car’s electrical systems. If the company can raise the funding to optimize the technology, they think they improve the firing distance up to as much as 600 feet away.

Imagine the fun you could have with one of these. Why not shut down that a-hole who’s been tailgating you for the last 5 miles? Or better yet, take out that annoying guy on the train who’s been yammering to his buddies on his cell phone.

Look no further than Vision Research’s Phantom Miro high speed digital camera series.

These cameras can shoot close up images at an insane rate of speed. They can take as many as a thousand 800×600 (SVGA) resolution photos every second. The lower the resolution is set, the more frames they can snap, topping out at 95,000 frames per second when dialed down to a 32×32 pixel resolution.

Now these cameras weren’t made for casual users. They’re desinged primarily for capturing and analyzing minute product defects in everything from automotive crash simulations to product durability drop tests.

The PogoAlert features a compact 1.8-inch LCD screen that mounts on your car’s dashboard or windshield, and lets you know when you’re approaching a speed trap or traffic camera. It also comes with live radar and laser detection to alert you to new spots that aren’t yet in the GPS database. Since it’s loaded with GPS data, it can also alert you to the current speed limit, and only alarm if you’ve exceeded that. Remember that radar and laser detectors aren’t legal in all localities, so check your local laws before thinking about one of these.

Apparently, Nike is getting ready to release a new digital watch that can record and upload data from their Nike+ shoe sensors without the use of an iPod. The new watch, called the Nike Speed+ appeared for just a few minutes on Nike’s European website before vanishing. Luckily, an enterprising visitor managed to grab a screenshot of the new watch and its details before the page went away.

According to the description, the watch will feature wireless integration with Nike+ in-shoe sensors. It can then display distance, pace, elapsed time and calories burned information on the watch’s LCD backlit display. A USB port is provided for downloading data to the Nikeplus website for historical progress tracking. As one would expect with such a leak, no pricing or release date was revealed.

While using a small amount of hard disk space to cache a portion of game content is a trick long used by the Xbox 360 and pretty much all PC games, it’s been revealed that some PS3 games would be using a very significant portion of the console’s hard drive to speed performance.

For example, Ridge Racer 7 will use up to 5GB of hard disk space to speed load times, while Genji will use about 4 GB of space. Sony is says there will be an option to copy game files to to console’s hard drive when you first install a game. After this initial installation procedure, games should load significantly faster. Obviously, the real issue here is the amount of available drive space. With the $499 model touting a paltry 20GB hard drive, you’ll only be able to pre-load a handful of games before running out of disk space. The $599/60GB model will fare a bit better, but if you plan on downloading music, videos and game content, I’ll bet our drives will be full before we know it. I’ve long theorized that the high capacity of Blu-ray disks, combined with the fact that it’s a first-generation technology would result in slow load times for the Playstation 3. I’m guessing that’s the reason that so much content will need to be offloaded to hard disk.
