Pixel sprites may be ancient by today’s standards, but they still retain their charm. They’re relatively easy to create, too, and with Terrible Games’ iPad app Sprite Something, game developers and artists can literally whip one up in seconds.

Sprite Something lets you make multiple frames and save them in one image file, which can then be transferred to a real desktop computer via iTunes. You can preview your creation in different sizes, which I guess is useful for game developers, like if they’re making a game for a small device like the iPhone. The app also has an onion-paper like feature, where you can overlay an image over your new canvas, making it easier to stay consistent with the design.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I’m not sure if it’s in the app, but it would be nice if there was a quick copy or duplicate feature. As you can see, a lot of sprites are symmetrical, so it would save a lot of time if one could duplicate and reverse half of a drawing to make a whole image. As with all iDevice apps, Sprite Something is available at the iTunes Store (link opens iTunes) and for the low low price of $2.99 (USD).

If you’ve ever wondered how Ryu and the rest of the warriors who like to battle on thoroughfares would look like if they were transported to Megaman’s original 8-bit world, you probably have too much time on your hands. Waste no more of your life, because Capcom forum member SpeedBrkr – he’s so fast some of the vowels in his name were left behind – has gone and done did it for your daydreaming ass. Behold, the cast of Street Fighter IV in 8-bit, Megaman style. Or Rockman style.

He’s also made a wallpaper in various resolutions, including an iPhone-ready version, made to look like a character select screen. You think the Blue Bomber can beat all of these fighters?

Damn those eyes are huge. Want individual sprites? SpeedBrkr’s got you covered. He’s not charging us for his awesome work, but if you’re going to use them on your site or anything please let him know.

It was the biggest of sprites, it was the smallest of sprites… no, wait, I mean they’re both right here next to one another, these Perler bead projects. It’s big Mega Man versus smaller Mega Man:

The bigger Mega Man is almost two feet tall–and would look awesome on the wall–but I personally find this a lesson in the truthfulness of the old bigger-is-not-always-better saw. Giant Mega Man is pretty cool, but adorable early Mega Man remains the cutest thing to come out of video games.

So for me, little Mega Man wins the day. He has slain Goliath. But whether or not you think size matters, one thing is certainly true: there are a lot of beads in that picture.

That said, it’s rare to find sets with which you can recreate entire mini scenes of games, but you can with these Super Mario World sprites!

It’s like a little puzzle! Rearrange them over and over to recreate your favorite two-second segements from the game. Punch a block! Leap through the air! Die to Bullet Bill! The options are endless. Okay, they’re not, but who feels like multiplying all these elements together? Not me, that’s for sure.

The SNES sprites turned up on Flickr and are also available at Etsy, though apparently not the whole set. You can add some Super Street Fighter II art to the mix, though. It’s timely, with the release of Street Fighter IV, and Ryu can probably beat down some koopa for real.
