Weird watches are like catnip to some geeks. They can’t resist showing off how different they are by wearing a watch that catches the eye and confuses the mind of normal watch wearers.

Yanko Design has unveiled a new watch from Eleeno called the Ever Increasing Watch. On it’s face, it has a grid and dotted lines that remind me of sixth grade math class.

The top blue line is the hours, the middle green line is the minutes in tens, and the bottom red line shows single minutes. To keep from hurting your noodle too much, the lines have the numbers underneath as well. The watch comes in silver or black versions, and is available over at the Yanko Store for $179 (USD).

Although Cylons don’t really need watches, since they’re androids and probably have some sort of on-board timer circuit, I’m sure that our robot overlords would approve of us human scum wearing these watches.

The Robot 1259C Watch was designed by Japan’s Seahope. The LED time indicators are available in red, which remind me of either Kitt from Knight Rider or a Cylon Centurion. Unfortunately, the dials don’t go back and forth like those robots’ eyes, but hey, they still look pretty robotic to me. There’s also a blue version that doesn’t really remind me of anything, but still looks cool.

While the watch is slightly easier to read than most of the ones from the Tokyoflash guys, it’ll still take you a few minutes to get used to telling the time on this watch – by which time, it’ll be a couple of minutes later. If you don’t mind always being a couple of minutes late, the Robot watch is available for $159 (USD) over at the Yanko Design Shop.

At first glance at this dramatic designer watch from Diesel, you might ask yourself where the heck the time is hiding. Then, you might take a second to think and guess that maybe you press a button for the time to show up behind the polished black faceplate – and then you’d realize there are no buttons.

Stumped? Well turn your wrist sideways, and then look again.

Instead of telling time on its face, the Diesel DZ9044 features a set of tiny side-mounted watches that can simultaneously tell time in four time zones. While the location of the watch faces isn’t all that practical, it’s certainly a stunning design.

The watch is constructed from durable solid stainless steel with a bold black ion-plated finish and a matching black leather band, and is water resistant up to 10 ATM (about 330 feet). And if black isn’t your thing, check out the DZ9045, which comes with a shiny stainless face and a brown leather band.

Both the DZ9044 and DZ9045 are available over at Watchismo for $365 (USD).

Hot off the presses comes the latest über-cool modern watch from the guys over at Tokyoflash. Their latest creation features a reverse LCD display which lets you view the time without the need for pressing any pesky buttons.

The Tokyoflash Negative watch gets its name from its “always-on” inverse LCD display which uses oversize black dot-matrix pixels to reveal the time, day or date.

The watch features a multi-color LED backlight, which lets you quickly flip between one of seven different colors. Heck, you can have a different color for each day of the week if you so choose. There’s also a “frenzy” mode which sends the display into a psychedelic colored light show with a press of a button.

As and added bonus, the display lets you choose from horizontal or vertical display orientations, and offers a built-in alarm.

The Negative is available in both polished silver and polished black stainless steel finishes (my personal fave), and retails for ¥16,900 (appx. $162 USD).

Ready to be the first on your block with this new bit of eye wrist candy? Head on over to Tokyoflash and place your order now.

While Japanese watch importer Tokyoflash is known for their offbeat electronic watch designs, this time they’re hitting the market with a bunch of new contemporary watches which are firmly grounded in the mechanical age.

The latest watches in their new Nekura series feature non-traditional analog dials, each of which possess a Space Age charm like something that might have found its way onto the set of 2001:A Space Odyssey. My personal favorite is the Tumbler, which tells time using a set of rotating numeric discs.

Among the designs are the Cabriolet, which features a green and black speedometer-like dial, and the Twilight, which offers a red white and blue theme, complete with retro computer font numbers.

The Tundra features an orange and cobalt blue dial, with a bold abstract geometric pattern. Each of the watches features a polished metal case with rounded corners and a curved glass crystal.

The self-adjusting stainless steel wristbands are trimmed with either black or clear edging, and adorned with custom engraving that ranges from futuristic to naturalistic.

All five of the watches retail for about $85 a piece and can be found over on the Tokyoflash website.

If actually being able to tell what time it is lists low on your wristwatch priorities, then have I got a watch for you. The EleeNo Cyber is the latest in a long line of non-standard LCD digital watches to surface in the last few years.

These unusual watches feature a disproportionately long face, with a bunch of little circular portals which somehow add up to show the current time. They’re available in either a dark or light metallic finish, with either green or red LCD portals.

The example in the diagram below shows 5:36. It took me a minute to figure it out, but from what I can tell, the tiny discs on the left each have two half-circles that fill in to equal 2 hours. So 2 and 1/2 filled in small circles = 5:00. On the right side, each of the larger circles has 10 pie slices that each equal a minute, so 3 full pies, plus one that’s got 6 pieces filled = 36 minutes. I think the bottom right pie can be used for seconds display when it’s not serving as the last ten minutes of the hour, but I’m not certain of that.

Now I don’t know about you, but even if I could read Cyrillic characters, I’m not certain that I could figure out the time without having to really think really hard about it.

While these leaked images come courtesy of Russian watch blog 12-5-9, I wouldn’t be surprised to see these show up at TokyoFlash at some point in the not-too-distant future (since they’ve carried EleeNo watches before).

Looking for a modern watch, but can’t make up your mind what color you want? That’s okay, because with the latest funky watch from Tokyoflash – the Nekura -encourages your indecisiveness.

The new watches use a hybrid LCD / LED display technology, which lets you choose a color on a whim. A set of color-changing LEDs is embedded underneath the LCD watch display, letting you cycle between blue, green, cyan, pink or yellow – whatever strikes your mood.

Nekura comes in two designs – Progression, featuring a circular clock face, and Scramble, featuring a bar-graph display. Both feature Tokyoflash’s typically cryptic displays, and a dramatic stainless steel watchband, engraved with a design that’s sort of reminiscent of a high-tech honeycomb.

You can find both watch models from Tokyoflash for ¥12,900 each ($123 US), including free worldwide shipping.

Designed by FludWatches, the TableTurns watch has a face that looks like a miniaturized version of the classic Technics 1200 turntable. While all the visual details are there, don’t expect to scratch any tiny records on yours. The only part of this turntable that rotates is the clock hands.

I’ve seen all kinds of strange and unusual digital timepieces from Asia, and most of them are so difficult to read that the novelty wears off quickly. So it makes me happy to see an unconventional LCD watch that’s actually quite easy to understand.

The Matrix M6001 watch displays time using a set of LCD bars at the top and the bottom of its display. The tall bars on the top indicate the current hour, while the shorter bars on the bottom indicate five-minute intervals. The zero bar on the bottom left is broken into four segments that indicate individual minutes.

The watch has a shiny stainless body with a stitched leather band in one of several colors. Depending on the hue you select, it works amazingly well as either a men’s or women’s watch.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find these outside of Korea at this point. But if you happen to know someone who speaks the language, you might be able to get your hands on one from Funshop.kr on sale for KRW 69,000 (appx. $74 USD).

Unlike some of the more cryptic modern watches coming out of Japan these days, the Seiko Discus is actually quite easy to read. A set of three numbered discs continuously rotate to display hours, minutes and seconds. The wheels are are partially masked by a frosted glass face with a clear glass window highlighting the current time. If you can’t figure that out, a tiny pair of green arrows on the glass make it even more obvious what time it is.

The Discus is part of Seiko’s Moving Image series, a line of automatic timepieces with decidedly contemporary styling. It’s available in two versions: one with a stainless body and white face, and another with a black metal body and a smoked glass face.

While the Discus is not officially for sale in North America, I was able to find a couple over on eBay, priced at about $890 each.

The hands and numerals on designer Italo Fontana’s U-Boat Night Vision watch are actually yellow instead of white to enhance readability behind the deep red glass. The crystal itself isn’t red though. There’s actually a hardened K1 mineral glass crystal which sits beneath the red layer, and you can actually remove the colored filter by unscrewing a stainless retaining ring.

The watch features a substantial stainless steel case, and an automatic Swiss movement. All this style comes at a price, though. The Night Vision retails for $5,000 Canadian (appx. $4974 USD). You can find the Night Vision and other U-Boat watches from luxury watch seller Matt Baily.

The latest men’s watch from London’s STORM offers a modern display with a retro spin. The watch reveals the current time using a series of numeric discs which rotate behind wedge-shaped portals around the perimeter of its face.

The STORM Nirvana features a cool stainless and black metal hybrid watch band which really stands out from the crowd thanks to it’s cool segmented link design. In addition to its good looks, the Nirvana offers a durable mineral glass crystal and is water resistant to 50-meters (about 164 feet).

The Nirvana is available in limited quantities from Japan modern watch shop Sea Hope for ¥25,515 (appx. $226 USD). Despite its name, the watch does not Smell Like Teen Spirit or ship in a Heart Shaped Box. [Sorry, I couldn't resist].

Looking for a cool gift for the geek who has everything? I really dig this shiny new digital watch and its dramatic styling.

Concealed behind the mirrored face of the Reflection watch dwells a bright red LED display which only shows itself when illuminated. When it’s not telling the time, it’s perfect for checking out your good looks (or picking that piece of food out from between your teeth).

The super-shiny finish is a perfect complement to the Reflection’s highly-polished gunmetal band. There’s something about the retro-modern style of LED watches that always catches my eye. I especially like the fact that the display on this one is a little different from the typical 7-segment readout, using a dot-matrix to render the current time instead.

The Reflection watch features a durable mineralite lens with a polarized mirror finish, and a sturdy stainless steel case and band. You can find it at LEDWatchStop for $159 USD.

Designed by renowned space-age designer Roger Tallon, the classic Diode watch was originally released back in 1975 by legendary French watchmaker LIP. Now you can pick up a modern revamp of the original 7-segment LED watch, built with all new parts, but a dead ringer for the original.

Watchismo offers the LIP Diode in several revamped styles including the classic red display pictured, as well as in green and orange displays too. All models retail for $289.

Starck’s new Wrapped watches feature an electroplated face which conceals almost the entirety of the watch hands. A small sliver of the hands shows through an open ring in the face, so all you see are little dots indicating hours and minutes, and a thin line representing seconds.

Each minimal watch offers a durable stainless steel case, and is available with either a mesh metal band ($125) or a grey leather one ($110). As is usually the case with B&O gear, it looks good and has exceptional build quality. As is also the case with their products, it’s extremely pricey, with an MSRP of…

Designer electronics firm Bang & Olufsen has officially announced the release of their new MP3 player, the Beosound 6. As is usually the case with B&O gear, it looks good and has exceptional build quality. As is also the case with their products, it’s extremely pricey, with an MSRP of $600.

So what exactly does plunking down six Franklins get you? For starters, this player is encased in a beautiful mirrored stainless steel and scratch-resistant glass body. The controls are accessed using a silicon rubber keypad, and track information is displayed on a bright full-color LCD screen.

B&O also includes a pair of their high-end A8 earphones, which look pretty slick and should sound great too.

So is beauty only skin deep? Certainly, the BeoSound’s uninspiring 4GB of (non-expandable) storage isn’t going to win any awards – nor will the display’s anemic 128×160 resolution. On the other hand, the player’s 40 hour battery life is well above average, so it’s got that going for it. That’s about where the story ends though. At $600, the fact that the BeoSound doesn’t even play video clips is absurd. Sure, it looks pretty, but your average $100 player can handle some video these days.

I guess if you’re incredibly brand-loyal to the Bang and Olufsen name, you might have to own one. But with Apple’s equally purty 16GB iPod Touch costing just $399, it’s hard to imagine why you’d pay $200 more for 1/4 of the storage and far fewer capabilities.
