We should all be concerned about the sustainability of the products that we buy. To do their part, Berlin’s Weltunit have started making device stands made out of cardboard, which have been laser-cut for precision.

For now, they offer stands for iPad 2s, iPhones 3GS, 4 and 4S. The thinking behind these semi-durable stands is that you’ll eventually end up upgrading your smartphone, so why should your stand outlast your gadget? Often, stands aren’t compatible with the new versions of your favorite tech, so it makes sense to recycle them when necessary instead of adding more junk to our landfills.

The cardboard stands are available from Weltunit, but you’ll have to sign up for their newsletter in order to find out how to get one.

Just like cases, people are always looking for the perfect stand, especially when it comes to the iPad 2. While some people were initially skeptical about Apple’s Smart Cover, anyone who has used it knows that it works pretty well, but it’s still a little cumbersome as a stand. This new stand from Ten One Design also uses magnets and it will prop up your tablet like no other.

Magnus is a desktop stand made from aluminum and integrated neodymium magnets, which will attach onto your iPad 2. Because of its compact, minimal design, the Magnus has the added benefit of making it seem like your iPad is standing up by itself, with nothing holding onto it.

You’ll need to use two hands to pry it away from the powerful magnets, but that’s a small price to pay for these looks. Also, it doesn’t work in portrait mode or with a case on, so if those are requirements, you’ll need to pick a different stand.

The Magnus stand costs $50(USD) and is available from Ten One Design.

There are already a ton of sleeves and covers for the iPad. There are also already ones that claim that they’re “smart,” since they can automatically wake your tablet up or make it go to sleep by just lifting or replacing the cover. But something that promises to push past just being a smart cover is Smarty.

Smarty trumps other stands in the sense that when it says it’s convertible, it really is, thanks to ingenious folding techniques and magnets embedded into it. With a few folds here and there, you can convert the soft, protective sleeve into an angled stand for reading e-Books or watching videos.

Smarty was designed by Kim Jung-Sik, Cho Jae-Hong, Lim Sung-Won, Koo Bon-Young, Lee Bum-Joon and Shin Jung-Won, and can be purchased from Connect design for $49 (USD).

If you’re like me, you probably drag your iPad or tablet around pretty much everywhere you go. That includes the kitchen (and the bathroom.) The Steelie Mobile Device Holder looks like a perfect way of checking on recipes while you’re making your next gourmet dinner.

Steelie was crated by Frank Vogel and Paul Turner. The great thing about Steelie is that it allows you to easily tilt your tablet to just the right angle. It basically reminds me of one of those cook book stands. It has a magnetic socket, which attaches to the back of your tablet, and snaps easily onto the tabletop ball head stand.

You can also use the magnet to attach your tablet to any steel or other magnet-compatible surface, including many refrigerators.

They also make a smaller version for smartphones, which look like would work well for dashboards or desktop surfaces.

The Steelie magnet adheres to the back of your device with a strong adhesive pad, as does the smaller ball mount for phones. It’s unclear, though if the tabletop stand holds in place under its own weight or if it must be glued down as well. Also, you’ll want to make sure you keep the strong magnet away from credit cards and hard drives, so don’t dare try using one on an older hard-drive based media player.

The tablet version, with both the Steelie magnet and tabletop stand sells for $60(USD) while the smaller version for phones sells for $30.

Let’s face it, wives and girlfriends won’t like this a bit, so you either get it and she goes, or this just goes in your man cave, which is really the best place for it.

You choose the color and this entire rear end of a Porsche is hand-built, with 100% original parts. Also available are other cars, like this 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, which holds a 52″ Sony LCD. It’s neat and all, but it would be cool if you could get the front end too, and create a nice Portal effect in your home, but that’s just me.

If you’re like me, you’ve gotten in the habit of taking your iPad to bed, and using it to read, surf the web and play games. One of the most annoying things about the iPad in bed is trying to use it while you’re lying down. I’ve tried propping my iPad 2 up on a pillow, and on its Smart Cover, but it inevitably falls over or has me craning my neck at a weird angle. So if you’re looking for a solution for using your iPad 2 in bed (or on any other uneven surface), you might want to check out the Cushpad.

The Cushpad provides a soft and squishy resting place for your iPad 2, whether in bed, on your lap while on the couch, or on a table. It’s a simple idea – a trapezoidal pillow, covered with a satiny fabric, and a couple of small pillow-like grips to hold the iPad in place. Just slide your iPad into the soft ledges of the Cushpad, and it holds it nicely in place. It works in both landscape or portrait orientations, and smartly offers two different angles for horizontal usage. There’s also a handle on the back for easily carrying it around, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that with the iPad in place.

I recently got a chance to try a Cushpad with my iPad 2, and it really is helpful for viewing movies and playing games while lying in bed and hanging out on the sofa. I could also see it coming in handy on your lap while on an airplane or long train or bus trip. About the only thing I didn’t care for was that you really need to remove the Smart Cover in order for it to hold your iPad – although for quick usage, I figured out that you can set the iPad into the bottom ledge and flip the Smart Cover over the top of the Cushpad too. It’s just not as solid and stable as if you remove the cover and use both ledges. Still, it’s a minor complaint about an otherwise very handy little invention.

The Cushpad is available in green, blue, red, grey or black fabric, and the cover comes off for easy washing too. It sells for $34.99 (USD), but they’re offering an extra $5 discount if you “like” them over on Facebook first.

FLOTE is currently up on Kickstarter for funding. It’s basically a modern metal stand that can hold your iPad, Kindle, PlayBook, Galaxy Tab, or whatever tablet you may have. No longer will you have to tilt your head while watching a movie or reading a book; no longer will you have to support the gadget in your hands, because the FLOTE takes care of all the not-so-heavy-lifting for you.

What the FLOTE gives you is a truly hands-free tablet usage experience. That is, if you don’t mind having something that resembles a microphone stand right in the middle of your bedroom or living room.

Ready to FLOTE your tablet? Head on over to Kickstarter. A pledge of $245(USD) or more will get you an actual FLOTE stand, while lesser amounts will score you rewards including microfiber screen cloths, sweatshirts, and commemorative pieces.

It’s not very hard to pick a tablet to buy these days. Okay, so maybe I’m biased, but in my opinion, there are few tablets out there that can match Apple’s iPad – taking into consideration the price and the features, that is.

But when it comes to actually choosing a stand for your iPad, well, let’s just say things get a whole lot harder. Because of the popularity of the iPad (and iPhone and iPod), there are literally thousands upon thousands of stands available out there in the market. Some are quirky, some are serious, some are all about functionality, while others are novel and clever in design. One that belongs to the last category is the Shadow Stand.

Designed by Nendo for Japan’s Elecom, the Shadow Stand has a slot to hold your device in place and is supported on the other end by a “shadow.” It’s not a real shadow, obviously, unless you think your device is actually a single flower in a vase in disguise.

It’s creative and quirky enough to warrant a second glance or maybe even more. No word yet as far as price or production details go, but I’d definitely want to have one of these when they do eventually get made and released.

While touchscreens and trackpads might be what people yearn for, the reality is that most of us still have to use computer mice in some fashion. This is why Nendo designed this mouse that looks like a “D”-cell battery. Need I say more?

The Elecom Kandenchi mouse’s unusual design is a based on the fact that all wireless mice need to be recharged. The nub on the positive end has been turned into the click button, and there’s even a scroll wheel on the side. The interesting thing is that this form factor reduces the overall size of the mouse, meaning that you can use it in more confined places. Ergonomics, on the other hand, have been thrown out the window.

After they were done with the battery mouse, they made a stand that looks like a pair of glasses. Why not? The Megane stand comes in both tablet and smartphone sizes, and when it’s not in use, it folds up like glasses do.

Unlike the eyeglasses on your face, these ones have suction cups in place of lenses, to hold your gadgets firmly in place.

There’s no word yet on pricing or availability of these quirky items, but my guess is that they won’t be that expensive – though they may be difficult to find outside of Japan.

You can avoid it as long as you like, but you know that kids love iPads and iPhones. The fact of the matter is that they just love the touch-based interface since it’s quite intuitive, plus there are quite a few cool games for kids on iOS. This new case is the Speck iPad Guy and it will only serve to further encourage your little ones play with your iPad.

From toddlers to teens, children are loving iPads. It comes to no surprise that Speck has added this case to its lineup. The iGuy’s chunky legs allow it to stand upright, which is perfect since this allows it to double as a stand as well as a case. The soft and squishy case offers protection for the metal back and edges of the iPad, but you still run the risk of your little ones breaking your glass screen if they ever drop your tablet on the floor. Though Speck does offer a screen protector film you can order separately.

iGuy comes in peacock, lime or mango and somehow fits both iPad and iPad 2. It sells for $39.95 (USD) at the Speck online store. You can also get it for about $32 on Amazon.

This new charging station from Mophie for your iPad is pretty slick since it allows you to rotate your iPad up to 180 degrees. It’s called the Powerstand for iPad and it looks like a pretty cool stand. The idea makes me wonder how many people actually use their iPads this way (as a sort of mini workstation).

Once you’re finished using or charging your tablet, the whole stand folds up and you can take it with you. It actually folds flat. Granted, it’s not as convenient as those combo keyboard/stand/covers, but it’s a different way of propping up your iPad.

I wouldn’t carry this stand around myself, but if you plan on using your iPad for longer periods of time in a stationary position, then this stand will do the trick. It looks like something that would look good on your workstation. There’s no word yet on a price or release date for the Powerstand.

We all know that what goes up must come down. We all know that an object placed on an inclined plane will slowly roll or slide downwards. And that’s all because of gravity. Friction and other forces might slow things down, but gravity eventually wins out. Or does it?

The people behind Ideas by Net challenge one of Newton’s laws with their What? Gravity iPhone holder, which is a very simplistic holder that looks like one of those numbers that fast food joints give out when they need you to wait before serving up your food.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So how does it work? There are no magnets, grippers, catches, ledges, adhesives or anything of that sort embedded on the holder to help keep your device in place. It’s all actually just in the angles. The What? Gravity iPhone holder is inclined at a certain angle that makes sure that your phone is supported on its surface without slipping or sliding due to gravity.

The What? Gravity phone holder retails for £3.99 (~$6 USD) if you buy 5,000 units. (Yes, I know you’re probably going “Whaaaat?” right now.) The price is slightly higher if you want to buy just 100 holders £4.84 (~$8) and share them with 99 of your best friends.

This nifty stand is a nice way to prop up your iPad, whether you’re in the kitchen or the office. Just Mobile’s UpStand looks quite fetching, and it will match the aluminum of your iPad. While it won’t turn your iPad into a desktop, it will make it easier to work with.

The UpStand is precision engineered out of aluminum, and its supporting grips are out of rubber so that your iPad or iPad 2 rests firmly in it. It’s compatible with many iPad cases too.

The UpStand will prop up your iPad just the right amount so that you can use it on a desktop with a Bluetooth keyboard. It’s also good for watching movies or using the iPad as an expensive digital picture frame or alarm clock. I could see this working to check out recipes in the kitchen.

The UpStand is available for for $44 (USD) over at Amazon.

If you’ve ever tried to shoot video with your iPhone, you know that it’s not only difficult to get a really steady shot, it’s challenging to keep a good grip on the phone without risk of dropping it or getting your finger in the way of the lens. This new, inexpensive accessory provides an easy solution to all of the above problems.

Designed by Mike Linhardt of AirCastMobile, the Airclip is a simple little gadget which slides onto the body of the iPhone 4 or 4S, providing a stable, comfortable grip on the phone while you shoot videos or stills.

It’s small and lightweight-enough that you can carry it around in your pocket and attach it to your phone only when you want to shoot, which is a huge bonus over many of the existing (and more expensive) camera grips on the market today.

Just slide the removable AirClip onto the edges of your iPhone, and slip your index finger and pinky through the rings on the ends. Voila. You have a camera grip. To make it even more functional with a single handed grip, you’ll want to move the camera icon down to the bottom left corner of your app screen so you can just tap that with your thumb. You can also use the AirClip as a (portrait-mode only) stand for your iPhone when you set it on a flat surface.

The AirClip is currently raising funds over on Kickstarter, with a goal of $10,000 by November 12th for them to go into production. A pledge of $20 or more will get you one of the first production batch of these ingenious little contraptions.

Creators David and Jason attest that the Floatr iPhone stand was something born out of necessity. When traveling, they needed a comfortable stand that could fit in their pockets. A year later, they are testing prototypes and have launched their Floatr Kickstarter project.

Floatr is a small, versatile iPhone stand with pliable wire-stiffened rubber legs that will allow users to switch them around to cater to their needs. The rubberized body fits snugly onto the back of the iPhone 4 and clips into place.

The legs can be bent into just about any position, allowing you to easily stand up the phone, or hang it on your monitor, the back or your car seat, or on workout equipment, among other uses. While the Floatr comes with two legs, you can also add two more legs for added stability and flexibility.

The design of the Floatr stand allows it to remain on your iPhone when not in use, and it will fit easily into your pocket.

A quick visit to their Kickstarter page lets you know that for $25 (USD), you will get your own Floatr iPhone stand if the project is funded.

Carrying around stands for all of your devices can be a pain, which is why I like Jesse Herbert’s Smartphone Bracelet. It doesn’t take up much space, and when it’s not in use by your smartphone, you can wear it as a bracelet.

It will work with a bunch of different recent smartphones, from iPhones to Samsungs, letting you do your FaceTime and Skype chats hands-free. The bracelet adjustable to fit most shapes and sizes (of both people and phones), so it’s basically one-size-fits-all.

It will cost you $24 CAD (~$24 USD) to get this bracelet, and Jesse’s got some black ones available as well. It’s definitely a handy stand that looks good even if you just wear it as a bracelet.

Sure, you can get a tablet stand for less than a dollar, but if you want something more versatile you’re gonna have to shell out a little more. No, I’m not talking about this contraption. I’m talking about the PivotPad by Rocketfish. You can use it to prop up your tablet, eBook reader, smartphone, <del>baby</del> for handsfree operation. No desk? No problem. Just use your thigh:

The PadPivot has two main parts – a curved base and a reusable and washable adhesive panel – connected by a ball-and-socket joint. You can use it on a desk like you would any other stand, but if there’s no flat surface nearby, just bring your thigh into the equation. I’m not sure if the base can accommodate thighs of all sizes, but it does come with a complementary thigh strap to further secure the base. The PadPivot can easily be fully disassembled and folded when you’re done using it.

You can order the PadPivot from BestBuy for $40 (USD). Thigh not included.

I never really thought there was a huge demand for specialized docks for chefs and other folks that like to cook. My grandmother loved to cook and she didn’t need a recipe at all, she just knew what to do. I thought all chefs were the same way. I try to keep my iPad out of the kitchen so it doesn’t get spilled on so this is a bit strange to me.

Belkin has a new iPad 2 stand that is specifically made for the kitchen. The case has a shiny hand washable surface and is kitchen safe. The stand is called the Chef Stand + Stylus, and it sells for $39.99 (USD). The cute little stylus looks like some sort of kitchen utensil minus the utensil part and it has a magnetic tip.

The magnet in the tip is the key to using the stylus and allows the navigation of the tablet with dirty hands. The stand also has a non-slip base to help keep your tablet from sliding around. The stand will work with a case on your iPad 2 and it should also work with most other tablets.

Along with the Chef Stand, Belkin also announced two other special kitchen accessories, including an under-cabinet mount as well as a refrigerator mount for the iPad.
