I like augmented reality a lot better than 3D, and hopefully these augmented reality capable glasses will become common place pretty soon. Vuzix‘s STAR stands for See-Through-Augmented-Reality and describes these glasses perfectly since they’ve got transparent displays, kind of like the head’s up display you see in some high-end cars.

Unlike other glasses of this kind, the STAR 1200 has transparent heads-up displays so that you can view the “real world” as usual, but when something from augmented reality appears, it’s overlayed onto your vision.

The glasses themselves contain motion sensors to track head movements too. Vuzix previous AR glasses used cameras mounted on their lenses for their augmented reality glasses, but the see-through displays are likely to offer a major improvement in usability.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

From what I can see from the demo and the images, the idea is pretty awesome. Now, all that’s needed is for enough decent augmented reality content to be generated, and we can kind of have our own Matrix. Vuzix expects to launch the STAR 1200 glasses this August.

I suspect if we had our trusty Hubble telescope aimed in the direction of Alderaan when the Death Star set its example, the pics might have looked like this. NASA has discovered what it called an “Unprecedented” explosion in the constellation Draco. They aren’t sure what the explosion is at this time, but it could simply be Eric Bana looking for Spock.

NASA said that it has never seen anything this bright that lasted this long in the past. As it is right now, all available telescopes are looking in the direction of Draco and astronomers are trying to figure out what is going on. They have a theory though, and it’s epic.

Some think that a star in the distant galaxy strayed to close to the black hole at its center and was sucked in by the tidal forces and the star was torn apart. The speculation is that the black hole happens to be aimed at us and we are seeing all the star debris and radiation out flowing from the rotational axis of the black hole. The giant explosion is about 3.8 billion light years from Earth.

Do you know what an astronaut calls that little turd that comes back up after you flush? A brown dwarf. Seriously, though, some astronomers in Hawaii at the W.M Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea have discovered what they claim is the coldest star even found. The star is a brown dwarf called CFBDSIR 1458 10b. The star is much cooler than its boring name though.

The scientists think that the surface of the star hovers around about 206 degrees F (97 degrees C). You could swim in that thing if you wanted. The star is estimated to have a mass of only 6 to 15 times that of Jupiter and is the smaller and dimmer member of a binary system with two brown dwarfs locked in a close orbit.

The star is so cold that the team that found it thinks that it might be possible the star has a watery atmosphere. Scientist using the Spitzer Space Telescope have found another brown dwarf that might be even colder. They think it may be only 30C on the surface so our pal CFBDSIR 1458 10b might not have the coldest title for long.

All right, that’s it. Our stupidity is getting out of hand. I admit, I’m not free from blame. I have spent countless hours feeding my brain with nothing but crap, like videos of a baby getting flash-kicked by a break dancer or a panda gyrating against a tree trunk. But last Friday, November 26,2010, humanity hit a new low, when a woman went to a local notary and declared herself “owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the center of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometers.” No doubt this person needs a good talking to, but I also want to slap the damn notary who indulged this insane claim.

The genius in question is a 49-year old woman named Angeles Duran, a resident of Galicia in Spain. And apparently, an American is to blame for putting the darned idea in her noggin. Duran says she read about an American who claimed ownership of the moon and most of the other planets in our Solar System. Where did she read that? The Onion? Anyway, Duran, who has the audacity to say “I am not stupid”, says she plans to charge everyone who “uses the Sun”. She probably needs the money to pay the American, who no doubt has been sending her Moon usage bills.

This amazing spinning Christmas star was completed just in time to awe any passing drivers in Münich, Germany.

9,000 LEDs were superglued to a wind turbine in just under two weeks. Thanks to smart energy systems like smart grids and power highways, it only consumes as much energy as a hair dryer! The 9,000 LEDs put out as much light as 20,000 Christmas candles.

The Siemens SuperStar was created by multimedia artist Michael Pendry for the company and will be on display until January 6th in Münich. It was created to showcase and promote sustainable energy and green innovation. I think that passing motorists might find it a wee bit distracting.

Although it looks amazing in these long exposure photography shots, it’s actually disappointing to see it in the video below. The turbine doesn’t spin very fast, so the lights don’t blend together. You clearly see the blades slowly rotating. The photos of it look amazing though.

When I think of Origami, I usually think of little paper swans, or maybe the unicorn that Edward James Olmos made in Blade Runner. But who says that video games can’t get in on the paper foldin’ action?

Individually cut and folded by Flickr contributor Lidia F. (aka “This Fffire“), these tiny Power Stars look just like their doppelgangers from the Super Mario game series (other than the defective ones with faces in the upper right corner). Lidia says she was inspired by Super Mario 64, so clearly she hasn’t upgraded her console in a while!

Each little Power Star is made from a single strip of paper, then hand-painted with yellow acrylics and embellished with some Sharpie eyeballs. Now, I can’t really figure out how in the heck she managed to make these, but if you’re out there reading this post, feel free to share some tips so we can all make hundreds of these tiny stars.

Here’s a fun bit of decor for fans of Nintendo’s Super Mario games. It’s a friendly invincibility star from the game, which can play a little tune while it sits on your desk.

Just like those brilliant yellow stars in the Super Mario series, simply activate the star, and you’ll instantly feel invincible (even if your office-mates think you’re a complete dork). With a flip of the switch, the star glows and plays the familiar invincibility tune from the SMB games.

The way my typical work day goes, I think I’ll need to line up about a dozen of these to keep me safe from bureaucrats, whiners, brown-nosers and the other general annoyances of the day.

The star measures 5.75 inches and can be mounted on a wall or placed on your desk thanks to an included stand. It’s powered pair of AAA batteries, so you can take your invincibility on the road too.

I see so many modern watch designs cross my desk, and while I think lots of them are really cool, it’s rare that I see one that I just must have for myself. This is one of those times. This gorgeous watch uses a bright OLED screen to display a field of “stars” when it’s not telling the time.

But give the watch a shake or tap on its screen, and the dots scatter around the surface to display the time.

Chinese Industrial designer Lv Zhogfang’s TIWE watch is just at the concept stage, but I’m really hoping he manages to get these produced. I’ll be the first in line.
