Statement shirts, statement earrings, statement necklackes, statement doormats – all sorts of stuff that make a statement are everywhere these days. Statement shoes have long been in fashion as well, but I think I just saw the pair that make the loudest statement ever.

These ornate “Steampunk” heels are adorned with lace and embellished with rhinestones on all sides. The edge of the shoes are also lined with smoked glass beads and vintage charms, which give the shoes a gothic vibe, in my opinion.

The coolest thing about these heels (and the reason they’re here on Technabob in the first place) are the LED lights. I mean, they aren’t the first pair of footwear that light up, but they’re the first heels I’ve seen that do in a long, long time.

They’re also pretty much the only ones I know that come with a remote so you can set the color of the LED lights and decide how fast you want them to fade or light up. I can just see someone wearing these heels now while getting down on the dance floor…

Anyway, they’re being made and sold by The Ratchet and Cog on Etsy for $180(USD) a pair. Any takers?

It’s a replica of an 1892 L.M. Ericsson model, but the rotary dial has been changed to push-buttons, with the center being a dedicated redial button. And even though it isn’t necessary, the magneto generator crank really turns. The cord even resembles that fabric-covered material they used to use for power cords on old devices.

At $110(USD) it might also be a good gift for your grandparents, who likely have trouble with the way modern phones look anyway. It’s pricey, but you are really paying for that old time style. Find it at Museum Replicas.

Sometimes it seems like with all of our modern technology, we have lost a bit of style and class. Sure we have clearer sound and everything is sleek and compact. But visually, it is all pretty much the same. And there are no large horns to pump out the sound on our devices. Back in my day…

The iPhonograph takes things back to a simpler, more civilized age, giving you the old mixed with the new. Michael Greensmith’s creation includes a handmade wooden base, along with brass components to give it just the right look.

If you like your gadgets to look all old-timey and retro, you can build an iPhonograph yourself. Instructables will show you the steps to make your own. You’ll need to go hunting for supplies like an old Cutlery box, a brass horn and a Mini Stereo Amp to name a few, but the end result should be worth all of your hard work.

Is your laptop feeling too modern and shiny for you? Why not give it a retro redo? With the eCog Mercury mod, you can give your Sony VAIO a serious steampunk makeover, and send your 21st century gadget all the way back to the 19th century.

Designer John “Wilhelm” Dunn of the Victorian Steam Calculation Engine Company originally created this steampunk mod on commission for Sony, but is now selling the same thing as a mod for your own laptop. The primary components of the eCog Mercury include beautifully-finished birch plywood trim, retro key caps, and a grid of copper and steel “pipes” (actually wires and drawer pulls) and (non-functional) gauges which protrude from the back of the laptop’s display, which John refers to as his “boilerplate” design (also available as an iPad 2 or Nook Color case.)

The keyboard keys are encircled by solid brass bezels, and have translucent off-white keycaps which allow the keyboard’s backlighting to show through in the dark. The larger keys also have birch ply veneers, and the trackpad is surrounded by red fabric wrist rests.

If you want one of these, you’ll first need to go pick up a Sony VAIO F series laptop of your own. That’ll set you back between $1000 and $2500 (USD). Then, you’ll need the eCog mod, which costs another $1250. So this clearly isn’t a project for cheapskates. On the other hand, the end result is pretty spectacular, and I’m pretty sure even your pals with the sleekest new MacBooks will be jealous of your laptop when it’s done.

John is quick to point out that the design could be customized to your liking if you’d like to commission him to make additions or modifications to the design. Down the road, he even plans on building a steampunk goggle mod for the 3D glasses which work with the top-of-the-line VAIO Fs and other Sony 3D displays. You can see way more of John’s original mod in this video clip from Sony’s SGNL:

If you’re interested in the eCog Mercury mod for your VAIO F, head on over to Etsy for more details.

Sculpted in English pewter and brass, this timepiece not only looks good on the outside, it’s also impressive on the inside, with “solar powered, brass turbine blades rotating or hand cranked to generate transformed power”. It also has a quartz movement and a magnetic fastening hatch, and displays the “Temporal Decay Index” on its “Galvanic Scale.” Or maybe it just tells time.

I wouldn’t mind the next doctor wearing this at all, as long as he doesn’t say “Fob watches are cool.” It is $149(USD) over at Design Toscano.

Most of us probably don’t have the room on our desks for this big steampunk hard drive enclosure, but maybe one or two of us have created a large scale steampunk submarine. In which case, this would look great in the Captain’s quarters.

This beautiful overkill of an enclosure was created by Etsy seller Will Rockwell. It features a drivewheel and shaft, a service light, and even generates smoke as it works.

If you need extra RAM, simply pull the brass SURGE lever for a burst of overdrive, as a dense puff of smoke belches from the brass stack.

That sentence alone makes me want to buy it. It’s covered with walnut veneer and brass edging, with controls everywhere. The blinking service light rises like a periscope, as the drive wheel turns. Just insert your hard drive into the hinged door on the rear where you will find power and connection cables. It will hold any size drive up to a LaCie Big Drive. At least you get plenty of Steampunk for your $1,200(USD) purchase.

We all know how cumbersome 3D glasses can be, and the holy grail of 3D is glasses-free tech. But that didn’t stop one guy from going completely the opposite direction. This 3D digital viewer not only requires that you look through lenspieces, but that you stoop over a wooden box to watch content.

Will Rockwell’s Digital Stereoscope uses the same optical principals of old 19th century stereoscopes, but uses a pair of bright digital displays in place of photographic placards. The wood and brass box comes preloaded with a library of 100 Victorian era stereoscopic images, and Will says that the image quality will transport you back to that simpler time.

The device only comes with still images, and Will says you can upload your own pictures too. However, I can’t see a reason why you couldn’t figure out a way to play 3D video on it if you wanted to, since the underlying technology should be able to handle it. It’s just a matter of splitting video images into left- and right-eye versions.

If you’re interested in The Digital Stereoscope, this unique device is available over on Etsy for $1200 (USD) – about the same price as a modern 3D HDTV.

And I thought I’d seen the best steampunk video game controller. This thing of beauty is the work of Minister Morbid of the custom controller maker MorbidStix. It has a (faux) antique burl wood finish, copper rivet embellishments and real leather grips. It’s a controller for your alternate universe great-great-great-grandparents.

The controller is also equipped with custom sticks and face buttons, but the real star here is the lock and key mechanism installed in place of the Xbox 360 button. You actually have to insert the skeleton key and turn it to power on the controller and access the Xbox 360 menu. So if you lose the key, tough luck. Quite impractical, but you can’t argue with the concept. Actually you can. A steam-powered button would’ve been more consistent.

But the biggest drawback of this controller isn’t the lack of any steam-related function or decoration. It’s the price: a smoking $999.99 (USD) for just this one controller. Wow. If you think it’s worth it, you better head to eBay and cop it now because MorbidStix only has one unit for sale, and they say that they won’t be able to make another one due to a lack of parts. If you don’t think this design is awesome, MorbidStix has more custom controllers on their website (for a lot less money), including ones for the PS3 and Wii. Also you’re wrong.

We recently showed you some steampunk-inspired dice which I thought were pretty cool. But those dice were all just little cubes. These ones look even cooler, thanks to their unusual D&D-style shapes.

This set of dice was designed by shapeways user gythawen and Masterworks, and comes in a set of numerous differently sided-dice perfect for a good old game of Dungeons & Dragons, or any other board or card game that uses dice. Personally, I’d use them as Monopoly pieces, instead of the shoe and the hat but that’s just me. The intricately-detailed dice are produced using 3D printing technology, and as seen in the image above can even be produced in bronze, stainless steel, or glossy silver.

Dice range in size from 16mm to 24mm, and a complete set will run you about $25 (USD) when produced from resin (which may be too light for rolling,) about $80 in bronze or stainless, and close to $200 in silver. Of course the antique bronze seems the most fitting with the steampunk theme, but they’re cool no matter what material you decide to make them in. In addition to the steampunk set, Masterworks also offers this cool Harry Potter-inspired set they call the “Deathly Hallows”, which is equally as awesome:

Both the dice sets and individual dice are available over at Masterworks’ Shapeways shop.

Originally modeled and designed on a computer, each die is 3D printed and then meticulously hand painted to create that worn out, aged, steamy, punky, steampunk look. It’s available in iron and bronze finish and uses cogs instead of pips. Because it would be hard to represent numbers with steam. What would 6 steams even look like? That’d just be 6 water molecules.

This steampunk wooden gun is just about the most awesome thing I’ve seen in quite some time. Not only does it look amazing, but it actually works – as a NERF gun.

This wood and metal gun got its start as a NERF N-Strike Barricade gun, but thanks to the mad model-making artistry of faustus70, it’s been converted into the ultimate retro weapon. Faustus built the exterior of this gun from planks cut from an antique wooden chair, and then wrapped it with hand-cut aluminum he riveted into place.

Of course, the best part is that it still can actually fire NERF darts. The magazine holds 10 whistler darts, and it uses 3 AA batteries to help fire them. It also has a scope that offers 3x magnification to help you take aim on your victims.

If you’re looking for that final prop to finish off your Halloween costume, or just think this thing is as cool as I do, you’d better head on over to Etsy now and plunk down your $300 (USD) – since this is a one-of-a-kind weapon.

Remember that minimal Bluetooth handset? Well it looks like Woodguy32 has decided to put his own spin on the whole iPhone handset thing, with this steampunk-inspired dock. Except for the handset, most of this thing is made out of oak wood and brass, which is good, and it’s also really nice and retro.

While this one isn’t svelte, it’s got a lot of flair, so you might think it’s pretty nifty. The dock looks like an old fashion rotary phone, which is even cooler. Woodguy32 will custom-make your dock, so if you’ve got any special requirements, he’s got you covered. The handset allows you to take calls from up to 30 feet away. He’s also got a few different iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone docks available.

There’s even a triple unit, that will dock an iPad plus two other devices. You can get the iPhone dock and handset over at Woodguy32′s Etsy shop for $72 (USD). The dual dock and the triple unit each cost $99. Custom finishes and different woods are also available.

Yesterday we saw a peculiar but seemingly practical arcade controller, fit to be added to the video game controller evolutionary tree. This fight stick by London-based custom controller maker Sam Kurd aka B15SDM Designs isn’t as innovative, but damn it looks absolutely beautiful. It will probably make you lose more because you’ll be so engrossed at its design and details that you’ll forget you’re playing a game.

Unfortunately we don’t have a lot of details regarding the construction and materials used in the controller, but we do know that it’s partly made of Plexiglas, and that the buttons each have a white LED that lights up when the buttons are pressed. There is also a blue-green LED light at the bottom of the case, which you can see in the last picture in the gallery below.

I don’t know the exact price that Kurd charged for this particular controller, but his typical rates go from £250 (~$395 USD) to £450 (~ $710 USD). If you’re into arcade controllers you really should check out his website and his Joystick Vault gallery for more awesome custom controllers.

Hey did you hear the news? You know that chap Will Rockwell? The eccentric gentleman from America, whose house might as well be a factory for all the dreadful clanging and hissing and sparks and smoke coming out from any and every hole, you’d think he was fashioning a personal steamship – but I digress. The man emerged from his laboratory or workshop or mad house, whatever you wish to call it, with a wondrous contraption that he calls the Pocket Music Library. We could hardly believe our eyes and ears – okay yeah it’s an MP3 player. Already says so in the title.

Inside this shiny case is an Archos Vision – an mp3 player that’s also an FM radio, video player, voice recorder and flash drive – although Rockwell didn’t say which specific model or what its data capacity is. He didn’t actually mod the Archos Vision, just placed it in a very well-made case. I think the only functional parts of the front cover are the buttons, which as you may have guessed control the device encased within. Rockwell says the case can be easily opened to remove the MP3 player when you need to charge or connect it to a computer.

You can order the Pocket Music Library from Will Rockwell’s Etsy shop for $350 (USD). Yeah it’s pretty expensive, even when you take the bundled headphones, USB connector and fancy tin case into account. That being said, it is a one-of-a-kind device. The fact that the case and player are separate means you can easily replace the latter if it ever breaks, so that adds to the longevity of the case. Still, for that price I’d expect the gauges to work.

If you’re sick and tired of your modern, touchscreen smartphone, then have I got a deal for you. This retro-styled cellphone is sure to stand out from the crowd.

What you’re looking at here is what was once a Sagem X-5m cell phone, which has been converted into a neo-victorian calling device thanks to the creativity of one J. Redmer from Poland.

The phone has been integrated into a handmade wood case, and modified to use some antique brass buttons for dialing. The backlit LCD screen appears to have been set behind a green window to give it a glow which fits nicely with the retro style of the phone.

It’s currently listed over on Etsy for $350 (USD), and if you want it, you need to know that it only works on GSM 900/1800 bands, and comes with a 230V charger. So if you happen to live in Europe, you’re in luck. Be sure to check out Redmer Werkstatt’s Etsy shop for more of his unusual Neo-Victorian and Steampunk creations.

Etsy sculptor Kreatworks is back with another monstrous metal artifact. This time, it looks like Robocop is ready to invade the Victorian era. The last time we mentioned his work, he had built a 1000-pound Jack Sparrow sculpture.

The metal Murphy sculpture is 7.87 feet tall, almost 5 feet long(due to Robocop’s gun), and 3.3 feet wide. It’s made from recycled metal, which includes lots of automotive and machine parts. It’s then coated with lacquer to protect it from rust.

It’s certainly unique, but you’ll have to spend $6,400 to get it and we’re not even talking about shipping – which will certainly be a lot since it’s coming from Bangkok, Thailand. If you’re wondering though, he sold that Jack Sparrow sculpture, so this one will definitely sell soon.

Steampunk. We’ve all seen our fair share of it, and you might think that it’s pretty played out. That’s what I thought too, but then I saw Beau Donnan’s steampunk sketches.

Beau is a mechanical engineer and that becomes obvious the second you look at his work. His sketches are all finely detailed and he has engineered the hell out of what he puts on paper. Putting his designs on paper is one thing, but Beau, being an engineer, wanted some actual models of these drawings. Of course LEGO is the perfect medium to give them life.

And boy do they live. All of that detail from the drawings is brought to life in glorious 3D. Want to see more? Check out his Lego Steam War Machines yourself and see what you think. You can see his amazing Steampunk sketches here on Flickr.

From the looks of this retro-mechanical machine, it looks like Pac-Man was in existence long before the 1980s. The Ghost Eater 1 is powered by gears, steam, cherries and power pellets, and is the perfect t-shirt for retro gaming fans.

You’ll notice that Pac-Man is leaking some oil and clearly requires constant maintenance, but would you expect anything else from such an old and complex mechanical contraption? The t-shirt was designed by Forent Bocognani, and is available over at Threadless for $20 (USD) in either a mustard color for guys, or a more pleasing light yellow for girls.

I was going back over some old posts, and believe that if you squint real hard at the old Pac-Gentleman game, that’s Ghost Eater 1 there.

I know it’s not the first time I’ve said this, but I really admire steampunk artists and designers who come up with such ingenious yet fully-functional creations.

Case in point? This Steampunk plasma speaker that produces sound because of a small electrical discharge inside a glass tube.

It sounds pretty complicated, right? It’s probably not something that we ordinary folks can come up with, but it sure wasn’t that tough to figure out for Polish artist Conscious Flesh. (In case you’re wondering, no, that’s not his real name; that’s just his YouTube handle).

The Steampunk plasma speaker is actually a small, audio-modulated VTTC, which stands for Vacuum Tube Tesla Coil. The sound is produced in the large glass chamber that’s connected to the horn, which improves the low-frequency speaker response as you play your music.

Check out the video below of the speaker while it’s hooked up to its maker’s equally Steampunk MP3 player:

Upgrading a computer’s hardware with updated components is a good way of prolonging its life. But Steve La Riccia was able to achieve the same thing by doing the opposite. His fully functional steampunk computer is an amalgam of a 1991 Mac and a 114-year old Remington typewriter.

Aside from the typewriter, the mod also has a couple of other pieces ancient equipment. The mouse for instance, is a repurposed Morse code telegraph key, and the 56K modem is made up of old telephone parts. And it has a floppy drive.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

It’s a shame the video doesn’t show the computer in action, although I did find the screenshot below on the Mac Store’s imgur page. Apparently Mac OS 7.5 was released in the Victorian Era, because that’s what this computer is running. It has a word processor, a calculator, a spreadsheet program and even a flight simulator and Tetris.

As you heard in the video, the mod is on exhibit at The Mac Store in Eugene, OR. I hear the second generation of the Steampunk Mac is going to have one USB 1.1 port and will run OS X Garfield.
