One late night, while he was walking home, David Franklin passed by a dark alley and was accosted by three thugs. They tackled him and held him down. Then the leader of the group held him up against a wall with his shirt collar, and with a cigarette-damaged voice and a beer-soaked breath, screamed in his face, “How can archetypal furniture facilitate the sharing of memories?” So David built the Delen Memory Table. Or at least that’s how I imagine the question came to David.

As you can see in the picture, the Delen has a camera mounted on a post so that it has a view of the whole table. It can take pictures at preset or specified intervals, then wirelessly transmits those pictures to a nearby computer. David’s custom software will then automatically upload those pictures to a social networking site. With this design, you can easily make a slideshow or even a stop-motion animation showing what your day is like – what you’re working on, what you eat, how many dishes have to be piled up on your table before you make an effort to clean it up, etc.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I think that the Delen is neat software in gimmicky furniture’s clothing. It’s not really the table itself that’s special or that handles the sharing part – it just happens to be where the camera is. In fact, I think David should just ditch the table and develop the camera or even just the software itself. Leave those thugs to answer their questions themselves.

As we already know, Minecraft is an amazing tool for building intricate worlds and other fun digital playthings. The latest creation… Minecraft Tetris. But not just any old Tetris, this is the classic greyscale Nintendo Game Boy version many of us grew up with.

The guys at MinecraftA2Z built this Tetris level using the Minecraft engine, but they did cheat a little bit. That’s because the video below was put together using stop-motion animation, and it’s not actually a playable level.

Still, it’s pretty impressive and worth checking out if you have a minute. Plus, I can never get enough of that original Tetris theme… Especially this version…

World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. has to be the most recognizable starting level in video game history. It’s a great level too, from a gameplay standpoint. It has several layers – it serves as a tutorial, but also teaches more advanced tricks and even rewards the persistent (or lucky) player with its secrets. None of which are seen in this stop-motion run through the iconic stage.

Videographer/Photographer/Motionographer/Virtual Mario noob Jeremiah Warren made this delightful recreation of World 1-1 using After Effects. To make it extra special, he used an orchestra version of the iconic background music. Watch and cringe as he misses goodie after goodie:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Not even the flag? Still, that was fun to watch. Perhaps Warren will have improved his skills in controlling Stop Motion Mario in the next World. Or maybe there is no secret 1-up block in Stop Motion World 1-1. Who knows? I’ve never played it.

Despite the frustration factor, I’ve always enjoyed Tetris. Sure, it’s old-school, but the general puzzle gameplay mechanic led to countless contemporary games, including the insanely popular Bejeweled franchise. So it’s hard for me to pass up a good Tetris post.

This clever stop-motion video uses a bunch of Tetris block-shaped elements, hand-placed into position and gradually forming a complete bookshelf. Here, check it out for yourself:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The only thing better would be to load up the bookshelves with color-coordinated books for each block. I suppose they could have used the official Tetris theme music too. Oh well, maybe next time. Sure, it’s not quite as impressive as the classic Human Tetris, but it’s still a fun video.

The thing about stop-motion videos is that they constantly remind us how time-consuming they must have been to make. Take this video by YouTube user BananaNeil for example, where he plays a game of Tetris using the tiles of Rubik’s Cubes as pixels.

BananaNeil claims that he had to manually configure the Rubik’s Cubes with each shot. Although just thinking about the process is enough to give one a headache I don’t think peeling off the colored stickers would be any easier, especially since they’re not made to be peeled off and re-applied repeatedly.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So why all go through that trouble? BananaNeil actually made this video to promote his Facebook game, N-Tris. I’m not a Tetris fan but after seeing that video I just had to play the game even just a couple of times. It’s the least I can do.

I’m always amazed by all of the crazy things that people have been able to do with the primitive forms in the game Minecraft. Remember the time that Minecrafta2z made a version of Pac-Man in the Minecraft engine? Well the same guys are back, and this time, they’ve got a bad case of Space Invaders.

Just like Pac and his pals, they’ve created an animated version of the arcade game using building blocks from Minecraft. It looks just like the original game. And though it’s not actually playable, they did add the requisite sound effects, and it’s still pretty cool. Check it out:

I’m not quite sure what the deal is with the giant “Lockia” telephone to the left of the playing field. Maybe it was to call mom and have her pick you up from the arcade after you’re done playing. Or maybe the extraterrestrial Invaders just need to phone home.

We really like LEGO around here and we have seen more than a few stop motion LEGO videos over the years. My favorite video was the LEGO lumberjacks fighting dragons to the metal sound track. A new stop motion video has turned up that is geeky and is about as NSFW as a LEGO video can get.

The blue “h” in the vide seems kind of horny and keeps humping the white “h”, you will see what I mean. A couple bricks also get the green “H” to rocking so this is almost like LEGO porn. Still the video is cool and it’s interesting that the bricks are the characters in this case.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Generally, with stop motion we see minifigs as the focal point, so that’s kind of different. If you like LEGO, you will want to check this out, be warned though that there are a handful of sound effects that will make people wonder if you are surfing porn.

And here’s a jaw-dropping aerial view of Minecrafta2z’s world:

Wow. That’s a lot of work. How does one keep the proportions right while working on such a scale? And yes, that strip along the center is the first level of Super Mario Bros. You can see that one in action here:

I wonder if it’s possible to make a smaller scale Minecraft inside Minecraft.

One of the geeky things I’d like to see before I die is a LEGO electronics set that can easily be assembled and taken apart to become different devices. One minute it’s an mp3 player, the next it’s a projector. But since our technology is obviously not quite there yet, this LEGO video camera will have to suffice for now.

The camera is equipped with a macro lens, a 1.5″ LCD screen, an SD card slot and a cute LEGO tripod. To help kids shoot stop animation videos, a program called LEGO Stop Animation Studio Software is bundled with the camera.

You can order the LEGO video camera at ThinkGeek for $80 (USD). It also comes with two minifigs, so you’ll have something to shoot right from the get go.

This is part of Reymond’s ongoing Game Over Project and it was shot in a theater in Basel, Switzerland at the end of August 2010. I think that the best part of the video is the tacky music that’s mimicked by Reymond using his voice as the sole instrument. It’s kind of mesmerizing to watch (and occasionally annoying to listen to.)
Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The video took over 1,500 hours to complete, since each LEGO-constructed character needed to be moved around individually, then photographed. While the music video has been around for a little while now, this is the first time I’ve seen these behind-the-scenes pics:

And for those of you who never saw the completed video, here it is. I have to say it’s very impressive indeed:

I finally got a chance to see Coraline a few weeks back, and was completely blown away by the incredible things that could be done with miniature models and stop-motion animation. While you probably won’t be able to live up to Henry Selick’s amazing work with this little desktop toy, you can at least dip your feet in the shallow end of the stop-motion pool.

Made by Japan’s Agatsuma Corporation, the AnimeStudio is a standalone animation studio that lets you shoot frame-by-frame video, and store your creations on a 1GB SD card. Once captured, you can play back your animations on your television, with no need for a computer. The studio features a special swivel-mount camera that can be positioned all around a stage on which you can place either 2D or 3D subjects.

As you capture each frame, it’s recorded into a 4-frame-per second video clip you can play back on your TV. Still, it looks fun for really basic animations. While 4fps kind of sucks, you could always just shoot extra frames and then change the frame rate using some video editing software. And in case you want get your videos onto your computer, they do include companion software for your Windows PC as well. While all of the instructions for the AnimeStudio (and this silly video) are in Japanese, it looks like it’s pretty self-explanatory, and should be easy to use.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Up until now the AnimeStudio was available exclusively in Japan, but the guys over at Japan Trend Shop have started shipping the system worldwide for $194 (USD). While you could probably achieve the same with this webcam and one of the myriad stop-motion applications out there, the AnimeStudio looks like a fun toy for budding animators without a computer.

Here’s what we might get if we mashed two Mario games together:

Before you get overly excited, let me tell you now that barely anything happens in this very short film. But I think it says a lot about how influential and significant video games are to our generation’s lives.

It took him 36 hours to shoot and polish the one-minute video. It’s amazing what a talented person can do with cardboard, paper, glue, and some colored pencils. The only thing I can make out of those materials is a mess.

Michael painstakingly shot thousands of individual frames to recreate the first two levels of the classic Super Mario Brothers game. The levels are surprisingly accurate reproductions of the game. You’ll want to crank up your sound to get the full impact with the original game music as accompaniment.

Everyone’s favorite Soviet block video game has been brought to life using a roomful of people, taking on the roll of the various colored geometric shapes from the game.

The stop-motion video by Swiss artist Guillaume Reymond of NotSoNoisy creative agency is the latest in his series of video game inspired clips, which first gained popularity with Human Space Invaders and Human Pong, and more recently, Human Pole Position.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Human Tetris was recorded during the Urbaines Festival at the Palais de Rumine in Lausanne, Switzerland. The video shoot took 88 people wearing bright Tetris colored T-shirts, and 880 carefully choreographed still images in order to complete the effect. Add one goofy human-generated audio track, and there you have it.

Too bad I just ran out of quarters.
