I’m going on another trip in a few days, and while I’m excited for some more sightseeing and some much-needed R&R, I’m not very excited about the prospect of packing.

Not because I’m lazy or anything. Actually, I’m pretty OC about it, because I have to write down a ton of lists (which I double and triple-check) before packing to make sure that I don’t forget anything. It’s the actual packing (or “stuffing everything into the suitcase”) part that I hate. I usually have to have someone else with me just to sit on the suitcase while I zip it close.

Well, not anymore, I hope – if the Pumpack eventually makes it way into production. Pumpack is a suitcase with an integrated pump that can vacuum pack your clothes so you can fit more of your stuff into it. We’ve already got suitcases with expandable hoods; and we’ve already got vacuum bags, so now it’s time to get suitcases with expandable hoods and vacuum pumps.

And if you’re the type who goes crazy over creases, then simply bring a travel iron with you. I’m sure it’ll fit easily with all the extra space you’ve got after vacuum packing everything. Still, it won’t do anything about the weight of your suitcase, and the ridiculous fees airlines are charging for bags these days.

The Pumpack is a design by Yejee Lee, Jongchan Mun, Seobin Oh and Woneui Hong and is a 2011 Red Dot Design concept winner.

Trip Sound Suitcase Sure to Annoy Terminal Dwellers

Every time I fly, I end up sitting next to the rudest person in the terminal. You know the sort that spreads out his stuff all around, talks loudly on the phone, and hogs both armrests. I can only imagine that security would have to remove me from the airport after beating some slob with their own music-playing suitcase if they were using this Trip Sound suitcase near me.

If you are a big music fan and want to be able to play music in your hotel or the office while you travel – and you don’t want to carry another gadget, this might be the perfect solution. Just don’t sit by me. The device is sized like a carry-on suitcase and has a pair of speakers on the side and a battery-powered device inside that you connect your music device to for playback.

The sound system has a pair of 15W speakers and can play for up to 12 hours depending on volume. The total power per channel is 15W and the bag has wheels and a handle for rolling through the airport. Other than the sound system, the case has a place for your clothes and a front section for organizing office supplies and holding your laptop.

The good news is that the Trip Sound suitcase sells for a pricey €750.00 (appx. $1031 USD) so you probably won’t hear too many of these the next time you’re at the airport.

All geeks tend to travel with lots of gadgets. I travel with cameras, video cameras, portable game consoles, smartphones, and tablets. The thing I always worry about is if I have to go by plane, the electronics will get broken in the bins or under the seat if the bag is a bit too fat. A company called Balanzza has introduced a cool new bag that is perfect for the traveling geek.

The Truco is modular and sized to be a carry-on. The bag has three sections with the main section on wheels and two smaller sections that come off the top and front of the main base.

One of the sections is a laptop bag and the other is a bag for other stuff and valuables that can both be removed and stowed separately if needed. When all three parts are attached together, you get a single carry-on that is a standard 20-inches. The bag is available for $199 (USD). It’s certainly not cheap, but it is cool and will protect your gear.

I’m not sure which market this limited edition Iron Man Mark V briefcase replica is targeting. On the one hand, it’s good for cosplays, and as a toy maybe, especially since the gadget that it’s referencing is perhaps one of the coolest things we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. On the other hand, its interior has been made for serious briefcase usage. The interior is real leather, it has sensible pockets, and it’s even lined with a rubber seal for added protection. Seriously, look at it:

What self-respecting businessman would use this as an actual briefcase? Unless you’re in the business of selling geeky replicas, I don’t see how one can seriously lug this around and retain dignity at the same time. But as I said, it does make for a unique accessory for cosplaying. Imagine just wearing a swanky suit or tux to the next Comic Con, and when someone asks you who you’re supposed to be, show ‘em the suitcase. Stuff this jacket inside for added laughs.

Unfortunately, you’ll have to have the funds of Tony Stark to consider buying this replica just for the occasional convention; Entertainment Earth is selling ‘em for $460 (USD) each. It’s limited to just 1,000 units, but it’s still too expensive if you ask me.

I will be the first to admit that getting around big airports is a massive pain in the rear. That is one of the main reasons why I never fly coupled with the fact that I always get stuck next to the 400-pound guy with a sweat problem. If you have to fly a lot, you may be interested in anything that makes getting around easier inside the airport.

A new suitcase concept has surfaced that is called the Titan High-Roller Suitcase. This bag combines your typical carryon suitcase with the type of scooter that my 9-year old rides everywhere. The idea is that you can fold the handle up, the rear wheel out and scoot yourself around the airport.

All I can say is if I see you in the airport riding this thing, don’t be offended if I laugh and point. My kids would be very impressed though. This would be an awesome suitcase for that flight attendant that popped out the slide and ran off with a beer not long ago. He could have totally ridden this thing down that slide and caught some air.

So what do you do if you’re a geek and you like to travel with hoards of electronics for a few days, but you are too lazy to carry around a suitcase or bag of some sort? You pick up one of these SCOTTEVEST Carry-On coats.

The thing appears to be a trench coat length jacket festooned with an unbelievable number of pockets (33 to be exact). If they ever do a geek parody of the scene in the Matrix where Neo and company come in wearing jackets packed with weapons, this would be the wardrobe.

The thing has pockets for the iPad, iPhone, MP3 player, glasses, cameras, personal care items like tooth brushes and those tiny shampoos you can get on the plane with and more. The weirdest pockets are so big, they can even hold your extra clothes and shoes. I wonder if you can even walk in this thing – and I can only imagine what fun it will be to get through airport security with one of these fully loaded.

At the recently concluded E3 2010, GadgetReview spotted an interesting product from a company called GAEMS – not a typo, it stands for Gaeming Gaming and Entertainment Mobile Systems. GAEMS showed off an Xbox-360 compatible suitcase that’s equipped with a 15-in 720p LCD screen and “a whole mess of speakers”. In short, GAEMS wants to be the Ben Heck for the masses.

The suitcase that GadgetReview examined was only for the Xbox 360 Elite, but GAEMS said they’re planning to make a universal model that’s also compatible with the new Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation Slim.

As you can see there’s a power cord sticking out of the lid of the suitcase, but GadgetReview isn’t sure if its for both the console and the monitor. There’s no room for even a single controller inside the suitcase, so GAEMS says they’ll bundle a “sack” for controllers.

The price of the final product should be about $250 (USD), and will most likely be released later this year. We’ll see more of the GAEMS suitcase on PAX this July. GAEMS already has a website, but there’s not much to see there yet aside from the basics about the company. What do you guys think? Does the company have a funny name or what? And let me know what you think about the product too.

Now I’m not one to pack a ton of stuff when I travel. As a matter of fact, if it doesn’t fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of me, it’s not going with me. On the other hand, I certainly know my share of people who would like to bring their entire closet with them if they could. This suitcase is for those people. Or people who like to travel with a couple of cinder blocks wherever they go.

This ridiculously expensive polycarbonate hardshell suitcase features electric motors in the wheels that can pull the bag along the floor at up to 3 miles per hour. Now don’t get any funny ideas about loading this thing up with 70 pounds of cargo and sending it hurtling through airport security to clear the way. That’s because the suitcase will only engage when you’ve started to set it in motion, it’s got at least 15 pounds of load, the handle is pulled out, and the case is tilted at just the right angle. Of course, you could always hack one to do your bidding without any of those checks and balances enforced. Me, I’d like to connect a remote control to one and see what sort of havoc I could wreak.

If you’ve got $1300 (USD) burning a hole in your pocket, give it to me. You can use next $1300 to buy one of these completely unnecessary bags over at Hammacher Schlemmer.
