Ye Olde Mario World Map: 1-1 B.C.

If there’s one thing that gamers love, it’s Mario. And if there’s another thing that gamers love, it’s maps of virtual worlds. And if there’s just one more thing that gamers love, it’s T-shirts. If you want to have all three, then vote for Glen Brogan’s Ye Olde Mario World T-shirt design.

Sharp-eyed old school gamers will recognize the art as a much more detailed and classical version of the map of Dinosaur Land from Super Mario World.

If you like it, grab a cape feather and fly to Split Reason Clothing to vote for the design. I highly recommend that you head to Greg’s blog for a larger version of the map so you can appreciate its winks and nods and bits and bobs. It’s large enough to be a wallpaper for tablets and netbooks. I think this will work better a poster than a shirt graphic.

MarioNYC Map: A Guide to the Apple Empire

I know more about Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom than New York and its citizens, so pardon me if I’m not terribly excited about Jesse Eisemann’s MarioNYC. It’s an animated map of New York City done Super Mario World style, complete with names of places and pixel versions of famous landmarks, like the Apollo Theater, Coney Island and the Empire State Building.

Super Mario World, Sculpted for Permanence

deviantARTist Tsurera is all about geek-inspired sculpture; a peek at her gallery reveals recreations of Nintendo and comic characters, among other things, but this rendering of a level in Super Mario World is among the most impressive of her projects.

The detail is spectacular, especially when you look at the whole thing, for the grand effect:

Amazing, what can be achieved with a little polymer clay and cardboard. Looks good enough to play.

Super Mario World Sprite Art

Sprites are popular projects among crafters, especially those who work with Perler beads, so there are always lots of examples of sprite art around. That said, it’s rare to find sets with which you can recreate entire mini scenes of games, but you can with these Super Mario World sprites!

It’s like a little puzzle! Rearrange them over and over to recreate your favorite two-second segements from the game. Punch a block! Leap through the air! Die to Bullet Bill! The options are endless. Okay, they’re not, but who feels like multiplying all these elements together? Not me, that’s for sure.

The SNES sprites turned up on Flickr and are also available at Etsy, though apparently not the whole set. You can add some Super Street Fighter II art to the mix, though. It’s timely, with the release of Street Fighter IV, and Ryu can probably beat down some koopa for real.

Squash Pork in Super Obama World

This may not be the first time we’ve seen a mix of Mario and President Obama, but it’s certainly the most interactive. Parody flash game Super Obama World replaces some classic images from Super Mario World with a grinning image of the president himself, and some of the familiar enemies and objects have been politicized.

Perhaps the funniest changes are to the world map, where familiar locales like Yoshi’s House have now become I Can See Russia From My House. It’s a longer name, sure, but sometimes, you’ve just gotta go for it.

Creators ZenSoft also have a Tetris-style game available on their site. Don’t worry–it’s just blocks falling, with no political themes.
