VHS tapes might have gone the way of the dinosaur, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fond memories of the dominant video format before the rise DVD, Blu-ray and streaming. Kick back, relax, and remember the days when you had to rewind your movies and keep them away from magnets with this awesome handmade VHS tape coffee table.

While it’s not made out of actual VHS tapes, this stack of three giant wooden VHS tapes is way cooler than that. The limited-edition VHS tape coffee table from Amsterdam’s T76, and is handcrafted from teak wood in Indonesia.

The table features intricately carved details from VHS cassettes, including those windows that let you see through to the reels, and handwritten titles on the labels. Since each cassette seems to have multiple titles, and the write-protect tabs haven’t been punched out, I can only imagine these are bootlegged copies of these classic movies. Quick, call the MPAA!

The VHS coffee table measures appx. 49″ (W) x 25.5″(D) x 16″ (H), and weighs just under 80 pounds, shipped. It sells for $1980 (USD), plus shipping, and can be ordered from t76 by emailing them at order[at]t76design.com. Just make sure not to pop open the side and pull all the tape out of it. I know you want to.

I have been a nail-biter all my life. There have been periods lasting for a few months where I would stop and think that I’ve finally kicked the habit. But bring on a new wave of stress, and the nailbiting starts again. For some strange reason, I only gnaw on my thumbnails nowadays, but I’m still working on quitting.

One thing that took me longer than it would’ve taken people who had nails was picking off the end of a roll of tape after its initial use (you know, when there’s no longer that small piece of paper or plastic at the end to guide you where to begin using it.) It would take a few minutes of spinning the roll of tape before I’d find where the end was, and a whole lot more time picking at it with my nail-less fingers.

If you’re a nail-biter like me (who’s still trying to quit), then you’d probably agree that the design for the Cellotape is genius.

Of course, you can solve the problem by getting one of those bulky tape dispensers. But if you’re on the go and need to take along some adhesive tape with you (yes, that happens sometimes), then the Cellotape might just be the one for you.

Cellotape, the tape with the easy-to-find end, was designed by Deockeun An, Jaehyung Kim & Cheolwoong Seo and is entered in the 2011 Spark Awards.

I could never imagine what it might be like to be blind, but I can only think that it would be incredibly challenging to function in today’s increasingly visual world. Imagine trying to use the flat touch buttons on your microwave without being able to see them. But telling the difference between the popcorn and the baked potato button isn’t nearly as big a deal as picking the wrong jar of pills out of the medicine cabinet.

Now, one little Kickstarter project aims to improve the lives of the visually disabled, allowing them to easily label everyday items with Braille.

The 6dot Labeler is a simple, yet ingenious device which allows the blind to label items with Dymo label tape. But instead of printing out letters and numbers, the 6dot outputs braille tape. The lightweight, portable device will allow its users to easily label common household objects, and improve their overall independence and quality of life.

The project aims to raise $50,000 by September 10, 2011 in order to get the 6dot into production. Head on over to Kickstarter to contribute to the cause. Frankly, I think the guys over at Dymo should get into the action here, and help push the project across the finish line – maybe they could even pony up some free label tape for 6dot’s customers.

My uncle is an actual duct tape engineer. If you go to his house, you might find his AC unit repaired with duct tape, his trucks radiator hose, and lots more is fixed with nothing but curses and duct tape. His shop chair is held together with nothing but duct tape and dried beer. I once cut my finger and he fixed that with duct tape.

The Duck Brand of duct tape has announced a new form factor for the ubiquitous tape. It now comes in 8.25″ x 10″ adhesive backed sheets. The backside of the sheets has a cover like a sticker so you can cut it to whatever size you need and then stick it down. There are many uses for duct tape and some of them that are geeky have nothing to do with what the tape was intended for. I have seen duct tape wallets and phone cases among other things. We even talked about a duct tape case for the iPad 2 a few days back. The point is geeks use duct tape for all sorts of things, so these sheets make it even easier to geek out.

You can get these new sheets in a number of colors, and some even have patterns like zebra stripes, leopard spots, tie-dye, and even a flame-job. A pack of six sheets will cost you $9.99 (USD) and individual sheets run $1.99 each.

There are certainly plenty of ways to protect your shiny new iPad 2 from scratches and dings, but wrapping one in duct tape wasn’t on my list of ways to do this. That said, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and there’s now an iPad 2 case made from the sturdy, sticky stuff.

Coregeeks’ Duct Tape Folio for the iPad 2 not only protects the tablet, it’s got hidden magnets built in to trigger the iPad 2′s wake and sleep functions like Apple’s Smart Cover. It even uses magnets to hold the tablet in place like the Smart Cover. Unlike the Smart Cover, however, the folio actually covers both front and back of the iPad 2.

The clever case also has a built-in stand, and snaps shut nicely thanks to a magnetic clasp on front.

Despite the fact that it does take a little away from Apple’s svelte industrial design, it’s still a pretty impressive case, and definitely unlike anything I’ve seen on the market so far. Coregeek doesn’t say if there’s any plan to make these for sale, but in the mean time, you can check it out in the video below:

Next time you need to box up a bunch of alien bits to or from Area 51 (or maybe just a package filled with video game gear), why not deck out your box with some Space Invaders?

Each roll of Invaders packing tape from A Brand Called Ed comes bedecked with images of your favorite pixelated aliens – as well as at least one invader I don’t recognize from the original Taito classic, that dude with the two feet that look like inverted “T”s. Do you remember that guy? I sure don’t.

Sure, you could go out and get one of those schmancy Hot Wheels sets and build a race track for toy cars, or you could buy this inexpensive kit that lets you turn just about anything into a track.

Well, I suppose that Donkey Products’ “My First Autobahn” Tape Kit doesn’t actually enforce that your cars’ wheels stay on the track, but it’s still a cool way to quickly make roads wherever you’d like. As an added bonus, the tape won’t damage floors, and can be easily removed from most surfaces.

The only design flaw with this stuff is that the only way you can make curves is to cut up a bunch of short segments and angle them to make corners. They really should sell 45 and 90-degree corner tape.

The $12.99 (USD) kit includes 108-feet of roadway tape, and they even include a little car to put on the track (looks better with your Matchbox or Hot Wheels collections, I can assure you.)

Race on over to Perpetual Kid if you want to grab a roll or two.

iPhone haters really like to rag on the fact that the phone has no actually keys, only virtual ones. This somewhat impractical, but clever add-on aims to fix that shortcoming.

By taking a small wireless Bluetooth keyboard, and crafting a hinged mount for it, modder Pachimon managed to do what we once thought was impossible – give the iPhone actual keys!

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

To pull this off, he used a TE-382 BT Bluetooth keyboard and crafted hinges from simple transparent Scotch tape.

If you want to put one together for yourself, you might have a hard time finding that keyboard outside of China or Japan. But according to my calculations, Brando’s Mini “Plam-Size” Bluetooth Keyboard is virtually the same height as an iPhone 4 (114mm vs. 115mm), so you should be able to do the same with one of those.

Sure, it’s completely unreasonable to expect that you’d cram that fat iPhone into your pocket – and hinges made out of cheap tape on a fragile glass gadget scare the bejeezus out of us, but it still achieves its primary purpose, no?

Designed by Jason Amendolara for Fred & Friends, the »REW cord caddy looks like an old-school cassette tape (or more like a microcassette, IMHO), and lets you conceal all that unsightly extra wire inside.

It’s the perfect companion to the sticky notes flash drive: the tape dispenser USB hub, for the person who needs to affix a lot of things to other things. How have you lived this long without it?

I may laugh now, but the next time I need to tape something down while simultaneously looking for a place to charge my iPod, I’m going to think of this thing. It’s perfect for people with small desks, or for people like me who just have a lot of stuff taking up all that pesky room on their desks. Also for people who like to collect unusual things, but that goes without saying.

The best part? It’s only $9. That’s not a bad price just for the four-slot USB hub, and as this thing is made to fit any ol’ standard roll of tape, you may never run out again… so long as you remember to refill it.

Remember when controllers had corners and not curves? When speakers were bigger than a house? When storage was limited but personal? and rectangular? Remember when synths… Nevermind. Synthesizers still look the same. Oh wait. Remember when synths had no USB connection? Because there was no USB in the 80s?

If you can remember those days it’s because you ain’t drunk! If you ain’t drunk it’s ’cause you ain’t been partying! And you ain’t been partyin’ cause your shirts suck. Really Steve, no one knows who Tux is. Plus Tux isn’t really a nerd. He’s not even a real penguin. He’s not real period. So head on to fauxsure’s page at Etsy and get dressed the old-school-but-still-cool way.

All of fauxsure’s shirts are screenprinted, in keeping with the old school feel. I don’t even know what the hell that thing is beside the NES controller. You can probably name them all in 5 seconds. See, it’s a shirt and a conversation piece.

All designs are printed on American Apparel shirts, style 2001 for Men’s and style 2102 for Women’s. You can specify the color of the shirt as well as the designs, but if you’re not good at this fashion thing you can also let fauxsure pick the design color that matches your chosen shirt color.

You can also specify if you want a different shirt style aside from the default ones, but again make sure that they’re from American Apparel. Of course you have to tell them the shirt size as well.

All shirts sell for $21.50 USD. fauxsure also has bags screenprinted with these same designs, and they have other non-retro techie designs as well. Go and for once in your life be invited to a party that doesn’t raid or kill but just drinks and chills.

I can’t think of any better way to connect my mix tape USB flash drive to my computer than to plug it into this retro cassette tape USB hub.

The 4-port USB 2.0 hub may look exactly like an old school cassette tape, but I can pretty much assure you that you’ll wreck your tape player if you attempt to pop this thing in and listen to it. I can only imagine the horrific screeching sound that would come out of my speakers when I press play. Of course, assuming that you actually follow the instructions and use it as a proper USB hub, it should be much more benign.

It’ll look really great sandwiched between your old Steve Miller Band, Boston and Foreigner tapes that I’m sure you still have lying next to your Walkman. You can get your hands on the USB cassette tape USB hub at UK gadget shop I Want One of Those for £12.99 (appx. $24 USD).

The cassette tape is probably just a fuzzy memory for those of you who grew up with Compact Discs and MP3s. But for us born before the 1980s, we have to figure out what to do with all of those old tapes. Why not turn them into a lighting fixture?

That’s exactly what the guys over at Transparent House are doing with their cassettes. The designers make each lamp from dozens of individual cassette tapes, arranged into visually appealing patterns. Not only do they look cool as a sculptural piece, they cast dramatic shadows onto surrounding surfaces.

Each lamp uses a bright, cool-burning neon light source to keep the plastic cassettes from melting. Of course, they left each tape in its original transparent case so they could be together glued neatly.

And if you have a fond place in your heart for the old micro-cassette, you don’t have to feel left out. They’ve got a lamp just for you, made from 140 of the mini tapes.

Now the guys over at Transparent House don’t say if they’ll be producing these en masse, or if they’re just one-of-a-kind design pieces. Personally, I’d love a couple of these in my media room.

Perfect for labeling boxes, temporary signage, creating impromptu artworks or modern graffiti, the tape comes in either a dot-matrix or segmented style. Just grab a permanent black marker and mark out the appropriate white portions of the tape to reveal your message.

Designed by rAndom International for Suck UK, the tape should be available soon. Prices will range from £5.00 to £7.00 (about $10 to $12 USD) a roll.

[For some reason, all this talk about tape made me think of Flight of the Conchords].

Chinavasion’s MP3 Cassette Player is a completely self-contained media player that just happens to slip inside your tape deck for easy playback through your car stereo. It’s not the world’s most feature-packed player, handling only MP3 format files, and zero on-board storage. You’ll have to add your own memory through the player’s SD/MMC slot.

I’ve always thought it would be cool if I could just dock my iPod directly into the cassette player in my car, but for now, this’ll have to do.

For those of us who were born in the pre-MP3 era, the idea of creating a custom mix of your favorite tunes and putting them on a cassette tape was one of the most romantic things that you could do for your significant other (unless you happened to include “That’s What Friends Are For” or “The Breakup Song” on there.)

The oh-so-clever designers over at Suck UK have put together this kit that lets you make a modern version of the mix tape.

Packaged in a container that looks like a classic cassette tape, the USB Mix Tape actually contains a USB drive that you can load your special playlist of tunes onto. They’ve also included one of those ruled cards that comes with blank cassettes for you to jot down your playlist.

It’s part of their new Fall 2007 collection and should be available this September.
