Straight out of Steven Spielberg’s AI, Fujitsu has just unveiled its newest robot: a social robot teddy bear. What can it do? Probably a whole lot and guess what, it speaks Japanese!

This robot is supposed to respond to human interactions thanks to a set of 300 pre-programmed physical and audio reactions. It’s got a camera in its nose so that it can recognize facial expressions and gestures. Apparently, they want to place this robot in nursing homes so that it can provide some digital companionship.

I don’t know. 300 interactions doesn’t sound like much, but I’m sure that it will keep the kids pretty happy for a while. As long as it doesn’t “learn” I think I’m fine with it.

Fujitsu has just taken the wraps off its latest robotic wonder, a “social robot” bear that is probably the closest we’ve ever come in reality to that adorably grumpy robot pal from Spielberg’s movie “A.I.”

The robot can respond to human interactions with a set of 300 pre-programmed physical and audio reactions. Equipped with a camera in its nose for face and gesture recognition, Fujitsu hopes to place the robot in nursing homes as an interactive comfort aid. You can see video of the still unnamed robot bear in action above.

I was all ready to make fun of these Mini Bear Speakers from Juicy Couture when my wife and 5-year-old daughter walked in. The wife got all excited because they are from a designer and my daughter was all giddy because they were pink, they were stuffed bears, and they will connect to “daddy’s big iPhone” otherwise known as the iPad she runs off with at every chance.

As a guy who won’t wear pink and thinks bears are imagery best left to a football team the Cowboys hopefully destroy, I didn’t see the target market. I do now see the market, it’s guys unlucky enough to run across these with a female in the room who can make puppy dog eyes. I will end up having to buy these damn things. I really need a lock for the office door.

If you are being forced to buy your own set, or happen to be a 5-year-old looking for something to hook to your “big iPhone” these might do it for you too. The things can be pre-ordered for $68 and will ship on August 20. The bears each have their own speaker inside and ship with a black cable for plugging in your stuff.

The Cylon Teddy Bear Mark 1 was created by Instructables user Dragonvpm, probably to scare his girlfriend! He actually did create this as a Valentine’s gift for his girlfriend.
It says “By your command” and has got that creepy LED eye scanner. If your significant other has a sense of humor and likes science-fiction, well this might be a great gift to make for her. Check out his full Instructable guide on how to create yours.
I think this is a fun weekend project for Battlestar Galactica and Caprica fans. Heck, it makes me want to buy a teddy bear and try the mod myself!

This frightening little guy sits on your dashboard and uses GPS technology to point you in the direction of your destination.

The Navirobo GPS teddy bear from iXs lifts his animatronic paw to show you which direction to go. If you miss a turn, he’ll point it out (I wonder if it laughs at you too?) When you get to your destination, he’ll do a little dance, at which point you can take it, throw it out the window and run it over with your car several times.
