If you’re the sort that watches The Walking Dead regularly you know the zombie apocalypse could come at any second. You may go to sleep tonight only to wake up in the morning and find the undead are swarming your neighborhood and want nothing more than to feast on your entrails. You had better be prepared. I mentioned last year that you may only need the Krovel to survive a zombie apocalypse. However, I now think in addition to the Krovel, this awesomely named Dead-On Annihilator Superhammer needs to go in your zombie apocalypse kit.

The hammer looks awesome, and you can use it today so you don’t look like some sort of wacko stocking up for things just in case of a zombie apocalypse. You can use the Superhammer for boring stuff like building tree houses, hanging pictures, and other hammering duties until the dead rise. It has multiple tools in one you can hammer, pry, and smash things.

It has a spike on the bottom (ok it’s a chisel technically), which is obviously meant for crushing the the skulls of the undead – or at least stabbing them in the eye. The chisel can also be used for breaking tile or brick. It also has a bottle opener for those refreshing breaks between slaughtering the horde. It even has a skull logo on the side.

The Dead-On Annihilator could very well make you the coolest guy at the construction site, but I know a zombie killin’ tool when I see it. You can buy one now for under 40 bucks over at ThinkGeek.

Most of us already have enough screwdrivers and multi-tools to fill an entire toolbox or utility drawer. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have just one more, right? Especially one that looks like a tiny tank. Sure, why not?

The Tool Tank won’t mow down your enemies, but it will make short work of your Philips and flat-head screws, with its three magnetic screwdriver bits, and hexagonal turret opening. To use the driver, simply move the turret into position, and use the tank body as a handle.

The little tank is small enough to fit on your keychain too, and it comes in both red or green. You can get the Tool Tank over at Spinning Hat now for £9.99 (~$16 USD).

There are seemingly thousands of different multitools on the market, but I can never decide which one I should buy. Now, my decision might have just gotten easier, thanks to Gerber’s Steady Tool, which adds a handy tripod to their latest pocket-sized tool.

The compact and versatile Steady tool has a dozen tools built in, including fine-edge and serrated blades, four screwdrivers, wire cutters, a bottle opener and needlenose pliers. But the best part has got to be the addition of a tripod mount, which works with either camera screw mounts or with smartphones, via a suction cup attachment. To use it as a tripod, simply pop open the front legs, open up the tripod “blade” and attach your camera.

The overall tool measures about 4″ long when closed, and weighs 5.8 ounces, making it a somewhat largish thing to keep in your pocket, but a totally awesome thing to keep in your backpack or book bag. And I can’t imagine going on an outdoor trip without this in my travel kit.

If you’re in the market for a multi-functional tool, and you like to take photos, you’ll definitely want to check out the Steady. It lists for $64(USD) but you can find it over on Amazon for as little as $44 (USD).

You might have noticed that there have been an increasing number of attacks on company servers and databases in recent times. Some groups hack for the fun of it all, although I don’t really see where the fun in causing such damage is, though. However, others hackers have more malicious and dangerous intentions.

In the case that you happen to have an account with a company that had been hacked, then fret not, because you can use PwnedList to check if your information has been compromised.

The online tool was developed by Alan Puzic, who is a professional security intelligence researcher who’s into “white-hat” hacking (or the good kind, if there really is one). In an interview, Puzic said: “Our goal was to design a simple-to-use online portal where an average user could check to see if his or her account credentials were leaked.”

You can check if your accounts are safe simply by typing in your username or e-mail address and hitting “Check.” If you find you’ve been compromised, now would be a good time to go change all of your passwords that use that email address. And if you’re worried about PwnedList itself, don’t, because they won’t store any of the information that you enter or any hits on searches you’ve made for your accounts on its database.

It’s pretty hard to be impressed by a simple drill bit, but this particular one does something I’ve not seen before. Instead of cutting round holes, this special bit cuts perfectly square ones.

If you’ve ever tried to cut a square hole with a regular drill, you know this is next to impossible, and you usually end up resorting to getting a saw or a file out to finish the job. But this unusual milling bit from Japan’s Dijet can cut squares in metal like nobody’s business. Here, check it out in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Pretty amazing, no? It’s hard to tell exactly how it works, but it appears to have some specially angled carbide cutting blades on it which gradually whittle away at metal in 15 degree increments. At least that’s what it looks like in the diagram. I wonder if you’ll ever be able to walk down to the Home Depot and buy one of these, or if it’s only designed for industrial milling equipment.

I only wish that when I needed to solder some electronic parts together, I had a soldering gun this cool.

You see, back in 1983, Craig Smith busted his dad’s soldering iron. So to make things right, he took the parts of the smashed up Bakelite iron and “fixed it.” Well, actually, he improved upon it by turning it into Han Solo’s blaster from A New Hope instead – officially dubbing his creation the Han Solderer.

This thing makes me want to run out and make a whole line of soldering irons based on famous movie and video game weapons. Can you imagine a District 9 prawn rifle or a Mass Effect M8 with a hot metal tip?

You know how it is, sometimes you are just walking through the forest and you get the sudden urge to chop down a tree, but sadly you didn’t bring a saw with you. Well, now you can carry one with you at all times, in a little tin.

With the Pocket Chainsaw, you will always be ready at a moment’s notice if and when trees need to come down. Okay, so maybe this tool isn’t going to actually chop down any large trees, but it is handy for small jobs, like the odd tree limb that needs to be chopped.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

And how awesome is it that you can carry a saw with you in such a compact form? You can have it with you and be prepared without carrying a huge motorized chainsaw. It will cut things up to 3″ in diameter super fast and measures 28″ long. The Pocket Chainsaw sells for just $25 (USD) over at Amazon.

I admit that I have a bunch of tools around the house and I can only find half of them. Every time I need a tool, it’s generally the basic screwdriver or hammer that I am on the hunt for and just can’t find. I doubt I’d lose something quite as unusual looking as these Coral Tool multi-tools designed by Jinyoung Choi.

The tool looks sort of like a pyramid and has four arms. Under one of the arms is a flat tip screwdriver, the other has a Phillips tip driver, and one of the others is a wine bottle opener. The coolest part is the arm that hides a guide for nails.

When you need to hammer in a nail, the design of the Coral Tools keeps your fingers spread apart, but keeps the nail firmly held so you can get it started into the surface. You actually whack the back of the Coral Tools device it seems. Once the nail is started, you just hammer it in the rest of the way.

I wonder if this will ever make it to the real world, or if it will just remain a concept.

It’s a drag to be at some formal event and have those darned colors go flip and flop all over the place. Not only will earn you reprimanding looks from the older people (hint: grandmothers and great grand aunts who always have a snarky comment ready to throw at you), it also looks, well, tacky.

The next time you need your collars to look tip-top, hide a pair of these Titan Multi Tool Collar Stays because they will do the trick–and more.

What I love the most about these Collar Stays is that they’re multi-purpose. They don’t just make your collars look spanking hot, but you can also use them as a bottle opener, a loose thread cutter, and a screwdriver. They’re made with titanium, which is a strong and very lightweight metal, so you don’t have to worry about feeling bogged down by the neck at the end of the day. It also makes carrying these around in your pocket less of a hassle because they’re so light, you’ll probably end up forgetting that you were carrying them all along.

The Titan Multi Tool Collar Stays are available from the Yanko Design Designer Store. They cost $30 (USD) for a set of two and $50 for a set of four.

The Crovel is an awesome looking survival tool and I really want one even though I have no need for a short spade to dig with. This thing may well be the tool best suited for a life on the run from zombie hoards ever invented. It can dig so you can bury those smelly zombies after you club them to death with one of three implements of zombie killing.

The Crovel has a handle with a pic axe on one end. The space end of the shovel has a serrated saw on one side and a knife-edge on the other. This thing will slice and dice zombies all week long. The other side of that crow bar/pickaxe is a hammer.

The handle is wrapped in 15-feet of 550 paracord so you can climb to safety if need be. This very interesting tool has 13 tools for all sorts of tasks. It looks like that notch under the serrated edge might be for opening the last beer on earth. The Crovel sells for about $99 (USD).

It never fails that I can buy a box of 100 pens and three days later when I need one I can’t find any. I think I might work harder to keep up with a pen this cool and geeky. This thing is simply called the “Metal Pen with Level and Screwdriver”, and it’s made by Brink.

The name really gives away what this thing is all about. It’s a pen with ink and all, it has a inch and metric ruler markings on the side and a bubble level recessed inside as well. Under the lid, it has a small flat tip and Philips screwdriver for taking stuff apart and trying to put it back together. It’s also conveniently hex-shaped so it won’t roll off your desk.

The cool part is that it’s cheap at $14.95 each. If you have a geek on your graduation gift list to shop for, I would go with this pen since it won’t break the bank and it is really cool too. You can grab one over at the Neatoshop. They’re currently out of stock, so you might be able to find one over on Amazon too.

I never made it far in the Scouts as a kid. I was kicked out for disorderly conduct after beating up the Den mother’s kid. He was a tool. If you still stick to the motto “Be Prepared” and want to really be prepared, you need the new Wrex Titanium Adjustable Pocket Wrench.

As the name implies, the pocket-sized tool is made from machined titanium and stainless steel. It has a number of tools inside it including a trigger-lock adjustable wrench. That wrench has jaws that will open to loosen a nut up to ¾ of an inch. It also as a titanium coated razor blade on the back of that wrench jaw.

Just be sure you remove that blade before hitting airport security or you will be cavity searched by the gruff TSA folks. The tool also has a wire-stripping hole, quarter inch hex bit driver, and a bottle opener. That bottle opener may well be the most important part of the “Be Prepared” plan for many former scouts.

The Wrex Pocket Wrench isn’t cheap, selling for $179 (USD), but if you’ve got the money to spare, you can pick one up here.

Do you like taking apart your gadgets? Soon, it will be more difficult to take apart your iPhone 4. Why? It seems that Apple has decided that standard Phillips screws are far too easy to take out, and will be replacing the ones in future iPhones with something a little different. Specifically, the company is using a somewhat rare type of screw called a Pentalobe, which is shaped like a flower. These can not only be found in brand new iPhone 4′s, but also in recently repaired phones as well.

Apple hasn’t made any comment on this, but it is rather obvious that they are trying their best to keep people from opening up their phones. While it’s true that most people aren’t going to be able to do any sort of repairs themselves, there are things like custom cases and such that one could add if they chose. These new screws more or less prevent such modifications, and the screwdrivers for these are very difficult and costly to find.

Of course, if a person really wants to mod their phone, they’re going to figure out a way, right? The people over at iFixit have already put together an iPhone 4 Liberation Kit, which gives you the tools you need to remove and replace those two pesky screws with regular Philips ones. The kit will only run you $10, which isn’t expensive, but you really shouldn’t have to buy something like this just to open your phone.

While the big G is promoting their newfangled Instant search, it’s not the only newly unveiled technology from the company. Released just a few days ago, Google Scribe is a text completion service. Google says that the tool’s suggestions are based on what the user has already typed, but that’s not the whole truth. We’ll get to that later. Obviously what you want to know is, is it useful? Yes it is, in an interesting way.

The picture above shows you the basics of Google Scribe. By default, it will offer suggestions as you type. Just press the corresponding number and the suggestion will be filled in for you. You can also set it so that it will only offer suggestions if you press the Tab key.

The letters you see below the last suggestion are sorting schemes for the suggestion, and this is where the funny thing about Google Scribe comes in. ‘A-Z’ sorts suggestions alphabetically, ‘S’ sorts by “typing savings”, ‘R’ sorts by “relevance”, and ‘G’ sorts by “Google Rating”. You’d think that typing savings would mean that the answers are arranged from the most number of characters to the least, but that’s not always the case. I’m not quite sure how Google Scribe sorts by “relevance”, but in my experience I found it to be the most helpful sorting scheme. Unfortunately, Scribe uses Google Ratings by default. Look at the screenshot below:

Flattering, yes, but do you realize now how Google Rating works, and how potentially irritating and/or hilarious Scribe can be? No? Here’s one more example:

Google Rating is just like Google Search – it suggests terms based on how popular a phrase is. In this case, as explained by Google Operating System, it seems that the phrase “Why choose IngentaConnect” is used frequently on IngentaConnect’s website, and perhaps on other webpages as well. So Google Scribe is indeed an interesting tool, but I suggest you stick to the Rating sorting scheme. I found that the suggestions offered by the Rating scheme not only made more sense, they also helped me think of other ways to say what I was going to say.

The presence of potential phrases also helps if you just can’t seem to start writing, because Google Scribe will start writing for you. Finally, you don’t have to stay at Google Scribe’s homepage to use it, because Google made a bookmarklet so you can call it up wherever there’s a text field. Go check out Google Scribe for yourself, and let us know what you think. Also, see what’s the weirdest suggestion that you can coax out of it.

Ah, software problems. We’ve all experienced them in varying degrees – sometimes it’s just a stupid online video that won’t load, and sometimes the operating system itself gives up. Now imagine a future where programs can still be compromised, or attacked, but will no longer crash or hang. A group of MIT researchers, led by Martin Rinard and Michael Ernst, are working to make that future possible. They’re working on ClearView, a program designed to fix other programs. According to the Technology Review‘s Erica Naone, ClearView doesn’t fiddle with a program’s source code; instead it “monitors the behavior of a binary: the form the program takes in order to execute instructions on a computer’s hardware.”

ClearView makes a list of rules based on a program’s “normal” behavior. When something causes the program to deviate from those rules, ClearView “comes up with several potential patches designed to force the software to follow the violated rules… If additional rules are violated, or if a patch causes the system to crash, ClearView rejects it and tries another.” And it does all of that without any human intervention. As a test, ClearView was tasked to babysit Firefox while the browser was attacked via ten different methods. On average, ClearView came up with a patch within 5 minutes of exposure to an attack. How’s that for customer service. If you’re tired of having programs die on you, read the full article at Technology Review. It may just make your day.
