This good looking top was made by Etsy user morosemelonhead using an officially licensed Nintendo mens t-shirt. Sadly, the item has already sold for $49 (USD), but I’m sure she would be willing to make more if you have the money. At least you can try and convince her.

This top makes me want to open an 80′s style cafe, where the waitresses all wear one of these and the customers can play the NES all they want while getting wired on coffee. I’m weird like that.

You might have seen the entire saga more than ten times. You might have decorated your entire den and bedroom with movie memorabilia and tiny toy figures. But you won’t be the ultimate Star Wars aficionado if you don’t have this Star Wars Stormtrooper corset in your closet (or get your girlfriend one, if you’re a guy.)

Funny thing is, there are no actual stormtroopers on this thing (though there are a couple of Clone Troopers.) The front of the corset is actually just plain black, so you can layer on a cardigan if you don’t feel like showing your true colors on some days. However, I am going to talk about that top he keeps on spinning. I’ve spun my share of tops back in the day but I can never manage to keep it going for more than a minute. Maybe I was just bad at it or maybe all I needed was the Magnetic Powered Spinning Top.

So what makes it spin? It’s not by the initial mechanical energy that you impart onto the top by giving it the first spin. Rather, it makes use of the concept of magnetism. The top actually comes with a radially oriented magnetic field while there’s a conductive coil hidden inside the base that comes with it. When the spinning top passes by the center part of the base, its magnetic field causes a current to be induced in the coil, opening up the battery switch, and passing through a jolt of power from the electromagnet to keep the top spinning.

Just flip open the collapsing handle on the Bandai Luminodisc and give it a spin. As it goes round and round, a persistence-of-vision LED display tells you how many rotations your spin made. If you hit a certain threshold, you’ll see secret hidden messages and animations. There are a couple of game modes, like trying to hit 150 rotations in 10 seconds, and a really tricky mode called “Just 100″ in which you need to stop the spinning at exactly 100 revolutions. And then there’s “Biggest Challenge” in which you shoot for 300, 400 or 500 revs without the top stopping.

In addition to the game modes, the Luminodisc works as a handy magnetic compass too. Just put it in directional mode, and a N-S-E-W directional indicator flips on the LED display when you spin it up to speed.

While these are available over in Japan for just ¥1999 ($20 USD), the folks over at Gizmine are selling these worldwide for $34.99 (USD).

For some odd reason, they decided to pick the Harold Faltermeyer “classic” Axel F from the 80s hit Beverly Hills Cop. I’m not sure if there was some misunderstanding that it was from Beverly Hills Top, but either way music would drive just about anyone up the wall after about 30 seconds.

Regardless, it is kind of a fun little toy, and when you put a laser beam on just about anything it instantly becomes about 10-times cooler. So get spinning and pick one up for just $5.95 here.
