The service is slated for North America sometime in the fall, but there’s no firm release date yet. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not we see any DSi marketing tied to this. With the DSi’s built-in photo editing, this could be a fair selling point.

UK Design firms Industrial Facility and luckybite recently teamed up with Panasonic Japan’s Chief mobile device designer Madori Kuroda to create this prototype digital camera specifically catering to online social networking.

The Panasonic Pixi was designed for use with Mixi, which is Japan’s closest equivalent to MySpace. The device was conceived as a simplified interface for members to automatically send mobile phone images directly to a specific friend, diary or community on the popular social networking website.

By simply pressing on a single touch-sensitive icon, the software would take care of all the complications of establishing the proper connection and uploading the image(s) to Mixi.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The odd thing about the Pixi is that it’s really just a shell that sits around your current mobile phone. It leverages the phone’s already existing camera, LCD screen and internet connectivity to do all the hard work. The Pixi really just provides a simplified interface for users to share their content.

There’s no current plan to market the Pixi, but I thought the industrial design was compelling enough to warrant some discussion.

Looking for a quick and easy way to create original clips for YouTube and other video sharing sites?

Sony’s low-priced NSC-GC1 digital camcorder is designed with that singular purpose in mind. The camera captures MPEG-4 encoded clips at up to 30fps (320×240 resolution) or 15fps (640×480 resolution), perfect for those online video services. Sony even bundles software that makes it really easy to directly upload content to popular video sharing sites.

The camcorder also functions as a 5-megapixel digital camera, complete with flash and 4x digital zoom. Keep in mind that there’s no onboard memory, so you’ll have to pick up a Memory Stick DUO card to store your clips and pics.

I really like Sony’s clean industrial design here, and especially appreciate the large 2.4-inch adjustable screen too.

It’s expected to be available this September for $200. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, you might want to check out the Flip Video camcorder. It’s not as expandable, and doesn’t have the camera features, but for a simple video capture device, it’s worth a look.

A couple of years back, a new regulation was passed that enabled banks to remotely deposit checks by scanning digital images, then transmitting the images to the originating bank. Now that digital images of checks are considered to be just as good as paper checks, it looks like this technology is starting to hit homes.

USAA is now offering the ability for its members to deposit checks without ever leaving their house. Simply endorse your check, scan the front and back, and upload it to the USAA Deposit@Home service, and the deposit is immediately credited with no need to ever bring the physical check into the bank. Let’s hope more banks start to do this in the near future.
