With Turkey Day just around the corner, I figured it was safe for me to start mentioning some Christmas geek goodies – and these ones are a great way to get you in a festive mood. I am absolutely in love with these laser-cut video game controller ornaments.

Created by Dave Rollins of Digits (with the help of Ponoko’s laser fabrication services), these acrylic holiday gamer ornaments are the perfect addition to any game geek’s Christmas tree, Hanukkah bush, or Secular shrub.

Each set comes with 7 ornaments, including 2-dimensional cutout versions of Wii, N64, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, NES, PS2 and Sega Genesis controllers. The ornaments each measure between 3 and 4 inches wide, so they’re a bit smaller than the real deals.

They’re available in 6 colors, including red, white, yellow, black, clear, and red-tinted acrylic, and can be found over at Digits’ Ponoko or Etsy shops for just $20 bucks a set.

Buy a bunch and cover your whole tree. I’m hoping next year that Dave will make some matching console ornaments and maybe an Atari paddle controller or two.

PC World recently featured 12 geeky tattoos (the article calls them “tech tattoos”, but there are video game related ones as well) , but I think most of them can simply be called “dumb ideas.” Let’s have a look at some of the featured mistakes tattoos:

I’m not too disgusted with that USB tattoo, because well, it’s simply lame. I think if it was just a tiny mark I can let it slide, but the ginormity of the thing just kills it. Now this wall outlet tattoo is pure genius. Now the guy won’t have to worry about powering any gadget he may have tattooed on him. All he needs is a tattoo power cord and he’s good to go.

I saved the best – meaning the worst – for last: some guy tattooed the text that’s displayed on Microsoft’s infamous Blue Screen of Death. What do you think his point is? That his arm crashed and needs to be reset?

Maybe now he wishes he could reset the night. Or maybe he’s already gone ahead and had his arm tattooed blue to complete the picture. Check out the rest of the worst at PC World. To restore your faith in geeky tattoos, let me also point you to some video game-related tattoos that were posted on Kotaku. I especially like Mike Fahey’s Final Fantasy Wizard tattoo.

Everything you can expect from a Zerg base a minute into the game is there – mineral nodes,a gas geyser, a hatchery, drones, and a couple of larvae, all on top of a crunchy creep-like (we hope) crust.
Blizzard should hire the person who made this as their official baker. Or at least give the person a pat on the back. Check out the hi-res pic here to have your mind re-blown.

I just came across this nifty new free app over on the iTunes App Store that lets you use your iPhone or iPod Touch to control video games on your computer.

WifiPad provides you with the ability to control any game that uses the keyboard on your computer over a Wi-fi connection. Since you can also design and serve custom gamepads, you can use it to build just about any controller design and custom key assignments you want. It can also be used to build a remote keyboard for other non-gaming applications.

Just start up the WifiPad desktop server application (Windows or Mac versions available), set up your preferred key mappings for each game, and you’re all set to play your games using your iPhone or iPod Touch screen. It took me just under a minute to get up and running, and I was able to control a bunch of Flash games without any custom setup work.

Sure, there’s nothing quite like the tactile feel of real keys or a joypad beneath your fingers, and there is the potential for lag if you have any Wi-fi connection issues, but it is still kinda cool to whip out your phone and start controlling your games from across the room using your wonderphone’s touchscreen.

You can grab WifiPad now over at the iTunes App Store.

[WifiPad]

Joystiq asked Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, if Sony would ever bring Trophies – the equivalent of Xbox 360’s Achievements – to the PSP. Upon hearing the question, Lempel fell on his knees and screamed, “Daaaamn youuu Salazaaaaaar!” No. He did not; Lempel only said: “You’re not going to see Trophies on the PSP.” Why? Give me a P! Give me an -iracy!

Sony isn’t treating everyone like pirates in this case. As Loot Ninja explains, the company is just preserving whatever “value” the achievement (it is what it is) system has. Because everyone in the known universe knows that the PSP has been haXX0r’d to death and beyond, Sony is afraid that a Trophy system on the PSP will only be hacked as well, and if so people will be able to unlock all the Trophies without actually fulfilling the requirements. That of course will devalue the poor system. Sad.

What’s even more sad for Sony is that the ChickHEN custom firmware has been polished for end users, and is now on the Internets, officially ending the reign of the homebrew- and pirate-free PSP 3000.

Sony revealed a lot of things at E3, but a price cut wasn’t one of them. Now I don’t know if this new-old rumor has anything behind it, but Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia is claiming that “industry sources” are claiming that “a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season.” Uhuh. Because parents know that kids need a PS3 for school.

I’ve all but given up hope for a price cut in the near future, but of course if it comes I’ll be happy. I already have a PS3, but a price cut on Sony’s Grill just might force Microsoft to slash prices on their console as well. If that happens, I’ll definitely buy a 360.

It’s a sad day for seller/mgs fan/sad person ids3remix, as he put up his limited edition gunmetal gray 40 GB Playstation 3 for sale on eBay. I think he really needs the money, stat, or else he wouldn’t be selling his beloved console. For those who don’t know, Sony made only 9000 of the gunmetal gray PS3 for their MGS4 bundle. But ids3remix’ PS3 is the rarest of the rare, because it’s also bears the signature of none other than MGS creator Hideo Kojima himself. The console comes with one controller (also gunmetal gray), the power cord (obviously), an ethernet and HDMI cables, but the original box is gone.

Since he’s selling his console, there’s no use in him keeping his games so he’ll throw them in too: Silent Hill 5, Disgaea 3 and…Rock Revolution. Yup. That’s it. ironically (that’s gunmetal ironically) MGS 4 isn’t included. But wait, there’s more! ids3remix will also give his PSN account to the lucky bastard who snags his PS3, and of course the games under the account as well. And it’s signed by Hideo Kojima, who incidentally proved at E3 that he can be quite sneaky as well (the shot of Kojima’s ninja moves is in the middle of that page).

The auction ends on June 15; bidding starts at $700 USD. Go! Think of how much the console will be worth in the future. And it plays games too.

Logitech continue their quest to serve the deep-pocketed hardcore gamers with the upcoming Flight System G940. The G940 is a combination of a force feedback joystick, a dual throttle and foot pedals and has more than 250 programmable button options, giving you easy access and total control of everything, from takeoff to landing to launching missiles to turning your opponent’s monitor off. Kidding. But I bet there’s room for that. It wouldn’t be enough to map WoW skills and macros though.

The joystick has a 2-stage metal trigger, an 8-way hat switch, a dedicated POV switch, 6 programmable buttons, a “pinkie shift” button, 3 analog trim controls, and contactless X & Y positional sensors. The throttle’s tension can be adjusted, plus it’s packed with buttons and switches as well: 2 4-way hat switches, 2 rotary analog controls, 12 programmable buttons including the 8 customizable LED-lit ones on the base.

Not to be outdone, the foot pedal also has adjustable resistance control, toe brakes, a retractable carpet lock, and stainless steel treads.

The G940 will be available in the US and in Europe come September for $250 USD. I heard you can program it such that it’ll play by itself.

He/She took an iPod mini – a relic from 2004-05 – and gave it a suit of blocky plastic armor, the iconic NES controller from the Golden Age, the ancient Pre-Playstation eras. Okay 1983.

The casemod is a bit “simple”, and by that I mean the iPod mini was just placed inside the controller. I know that’s not really as simple as it sounds, but it would have been nicer if the controller’s buttons were wired to control the iPod. Just saying.

As you can see the screen and scroll wheel face the back of the controller, so as to preserve the buttons in front. So from afar it’s going to seem like recycledgamer just plugged in a pair of earphones into a NES controller.

After a fairly long period of being homebrew-proof, it was finally hacked. And then shortly afterwards it became (sorta) obsolete. Give your PSP some retail therapy and get one of these custom faceplates from console makeover masters XCM.

Get a transparent faceplate for your PSP-3000 so you can see its inner beauty, and you’ll realize that even though it’s not the hottest thing on the market anymore, it’s still a technological wonder.

Protect your PSP-3000 from smudge and finger grease with the smooth black faceplate.

No XCM product line would be complete without a touch of chrome. There’s nothing like a shiny faceplate to make your PSP-3000 feel special again.

The Chrome faceplate is available at Gaming Generations for $23 USD. The Smooth Black is also available at Gaming Generations for only $20 USD. Unfortunately none of XCM’s official distributors were selling the transparent case as of this writing, but I’m pretty sure they’ll have it soon, so keep an eye on those sites if you want to get the see-through one.

Yes, our favorite Italian can’t go without the extra toughness and instant growth that the fungus gives him. He’s grown so fond of it, and all this time you’ve been giving him millions of coins to fuel his craving.

To the people who keep on saying that the PSP’s biggest problem is that it doesn’t have a 2nd analog stick, screw you. This is the PSP’s biggest problem in action: copies of Harmonix’ Rock Band Unplugged for the Playstation Portable are already up in torrent sites, nearly 3 weeks before the June 9 release date.

This is a development that I became aware of after conducting thorough research – namely, hearing about it from a friend and then Googling it.

However, a number of people are reporting that the game – or at least the one they downloaded illegally – wipes out the GAME folder on their PSP once they exit the game or turn off the system. A lot of minor issues are also being reported by the digital pirates, such as their system hanging or other songs refusing to load. Still, the game has been downloaded more than 13,000 times, and that’s just a metric from one torrent site.

PSP owners who want to do things the right way – I know you’re out there somewhere - can pre-order the game here for $40 USD.

The guitar controllers that come with Guitar Hero or Rock Band games are made of plastic and have a cheap feel. Then again they were probably made like that so you – and your kids – can jump around with it with ease. But what about the prodigies who post videos of themselves online, exhibiting their perfectly shredded Through the Fire & Flames on Insanely Extreme Expert Royale with Cheese? Where is the guitar worthy of their insane button-pushing abilities? Fret not, Logitech’s guitar controller is here.

Logitech’s Guitar Controller is officially for Guitar Hero games on the PS 3 and Guitar Hero: World Tour on the PS 2, but there’s a good chance it’ll work on Rock Band for the PS 3 as well. It has a solid body and its neck is made of wood, while the shiny frets and tuning peg handles are real metal. It also has a Star Power button and a touch-sensitive neck slider for Guitar Hero: World Tour.

Logitech’s axe isn’t for everyone, that’s for sure. No, I’m not saying you need to have mad skills to be worthy of it. because what you need is $200 USD. At this point may I just say that you can get a real guitar – a no frills, basic electric guitar, but still – for less than that. But if you must have this controller, you can pre-order it now at Logitech’s website.

Developers Force Design recently announced that pre-orders are now available for their video game Mad Bodies, a game for the Atari Jaguar. That’s right, the very same Atari Jaguar that’s been out of production since 1996. Madness.

Before you get up to check your calendars or the stability of the fabric of our existence, may I remind you that the Jaguar has a dedicated homebrew community , so this news isn’t as insane as it sounds. What’s that? Just a moment — we have just received breaking news folks: this news is definitely as insane as it sounds: Force Design worked on the game for 8 whole years. Eight years. As in from Pentium III to Quad Core eight years. For an Atari Jaguar game. My god.

And in case you’re still unsure if the guys at Force Design do indeed snort Kool Aid crystals, here’s the tagline for their game: “… the game for the Atari Jaguar that will always get some bodies mad. It wouldn’t be MADBODIES™ if nobodies get mad!” I guess not, Force Design; I guess not.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Oh and the game is priced at $80 USD. So yeah. It’s the sweetest of deals; the only thing sweeter would be Duke Nukem Forever. Go to the Force Design’s website and pre-order it, then go to eBay and look for the damn console.

You’re probably aware that the sequel to Bioware’s blockbuster action RPG Mass Effect is already in the works, but did you also know that a prequel will also be released? And that it’s on the iPhone? Well now you do.

The new game was leaked by a Joystiq reader, and according to the info the game’s protagonist, Jacob Taylor, is “a biotic-powered super-soldier who stumbles across a plot to terrorize civilization’s greatest beacon of hope.” For a second there I thought the enemy was after the bacon of hope. That would have been a better idea, because we’re all willing to fight for ordinary bacon, what more for the bacon of hope.

As you can see the game will be a top-down shooter ala GTA II. It’s supposedly a short game, clocking in at just 2 hours, half of which consists of elevator rides. Kidding. Marc DeAngelis over at thebbps thinks that the tactical aspect of Mass Effect will still be there, i.e. pausing the game to give orders or use tech abilities, as evidenced by those icons in the image above. And judging from the image below, yours truly thinks that the Paragon/Renegade aspect of the game will be there as well.

Mass Effect: Jacob’s Story will reportedly cost $3 USD, no word on release date yet. If this game becomes a hit, EA and BioWare might expand the Mass Effect story further, and may even release additional mobile games based on another franchise, Dragon Age. Trust me EA: Bacon of hope = $$$.

*Update: BioWare Community Coordinator Chris Priestly has clarified that the game is not a prequel but a side story of one of the characters in the upcoming Mass Effect 2, and he says that it’s not crucial to the lore of Mass Effect: “Consider it a “fun optional ‘extra’ game.” So should we still buy it? I definitely won’t, because I don’t have an iPhone.*

And because kristopher.hammar is a good person, he shared his little project at Instructables so that we could all have our SNES cartridge USB hubs.

Rockstar’s money-printing Grand Theft Auto series racks up millions because it successfully blends a free & open world with gripping stories; anyone who’s into video games knows how hard it is to find – or make – a game that does good on both counts. Like all good stories – whether in book, video or game format – the GTA series is filled with memorable characters. Although one can’t really say that any of them are role models, these characters have such rich histories and personalities that they make some real world people – like me – seem fiction in comparison. What better way to remember CJ, Tommy and the rest of the GTA cast than owning their Kubrick versions?

Auctioneer arakias is selling a rare, unopened Grand Theft Auto Kubrick triple pack on eBay, featuring 5 characters each from Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas. Yes, GTA III’s nameless protagonist (believed to be Claude Speed from GTA 2) has his own Kubrick.

Awww. Ain’t that the cutest AK-47 you’ve ever seen. Here’s the GTA 3 crew:

And here’s Rockstar’s homage to Scarface, Tommy Vercetti, plus 4 others from Vice City:

Honestly I’ve never been able to finish a single GTA game yet, but I want one of these Kubricks. Actually I want all of them. Unfortunately they’re hella expensive: bidding starts at $521 USD, and I think the auction’s ending a few hours from now. arakias claims that only 3,000 of each set was made, so if you miss this auction, you’ll have to do a bit of searching – and spending – to score these kickass figures.

Life is hard. Numerous trials and challenges lie ahead of us, lurking in the shadows that their shadowy souls provide for them, eager to pounce and thwart our dreams and ambitions, to prevent us from reaching our maximum potential, and at times we feel as if the future that we so vividly saw in our pristine mind’s eye when we were children has become unreachable, like the finish line to an exhausted decathlete, or enlightenment to an adolescent monk, or the bathroom to a man just aching, with all of his mind, body & soul, to drop the kids off at the pool, to fertilize the ferns, to do the Royal Squat, to greet Mr. Hankey, to launch a torpedo, or to just take a dump.

Flash game maker/ultimate survivor Rete created the game Don’t Sh*t Your Pants to recreate one of life’s most nerve wracking and horrific experiences, when the worst parts of you are peeking out and you’re not yet in a position to do something about it. It’s a text-based game, so you use phrases like “open door” or “sit in toilet” instead of directly controlling the character. Whereas the first text-based games were about fantasy and mythology, Don’t Shit Your Pants keeps it real and redefines the “survival horror” genre of video games.

Sporting multiple, often disastrously comic endings, where and how you poo-poo is up to you. Forget Resident Evil 5 and play Don’t Shit Your Pants for free at Kongregate; because a chainsaw-wielding, parasite-infested non-zombie is just a bunny with a pink ribbon compared to thought of crapping with your pants still on.

Seller lim-handek is one of the lucky winners of a Pepsi-Cola contest, scoring an Xbox 360 Elite with the Pepsi Max logo and blue flames, and now she’s/he’s auctioning it off on eBay. Only 60 of these 360s were made, and out of that 60 this is the only one that hasn’t been sent for repairs. Yet. Kidding.

Bidding starts at $405 USD. You know what else you can buy for around $405? A Play…

…Structure Kit with Slide from U-bild Play. What? Slides are fun too.

There is a very small scratch on the side of the console, but it’s so small that lim-handek had to point it out with a red circle on the pic. lim-handek’s feedback is 100%, and to show you just how awfully nice he can be, he’s bundled a couple of games with the console: Saints Row 2 and this game called Great… Thick… Alto 4? Grand Theft AIG 4? I don’t know.

So if you’ve been planning to buy an Xbox 360, you could do a lot worse than this; as I’m writing this there’s only one bidder on this baby so get a move on. The auction ends on the 5th of April.
