I’m a big fan of shooters when it comes to video games, and when you combine some science fiction and horror themes you really have my attention. This is why when Dead Space originally came out, I rushed down and purchased the game to try my hand at playing it. I’ll admit I never got used to the strange third person controls, I wished for some first-person action. Still, the game was popular and if you enjoyed playing it, EA has confirmed a new game is coming to the franchise.

EA stated this week that an official announcement is expected at E3 with the launch in EA’s current fiscal year, which ends in March 2013. EA also hinted that other new video games are coming including a new Medal of Honor and a new Need for Speed game. For now, EA isn’t offering any details on the coming video games.

Some reports are claiming that Dead Space 3 won’t be set on a spaceship and will instead be on an icy planet called Tau Volantis. Issac, the main character, is also rumored to have a split personality in this version of the game and gets taunted by himself. The split personality is supposed to be visible as a separate onscreen character.

There’ve been rumblings in the gaming world for a while now that the popular Elder Scrolls franchise was going online. Zenimax Online Studios has now announced the MMORPG officially. The game is called The Elder Scrolls Online. Simple enough huh?

The game is a new MMO set 1000 years before the events in Skyrim. Considering how Skyrim lacked tech, I wonder how playing a game set 1000 years before will work out. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years,” said game director Matt Firor. “The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

The developer promises the game will have the lone exploration aspect we all know and love from the franchise combined with social aspects of MMO titles. Solo quests and public dungeons will reportedly be part of the game along with player versus player combat. The current release date is set for 2013 for both PC and Mac gamers.

Sega has announced a new cart style racing game called Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed that reminds me a bit of Mario Kart with some notable and interesting tweaks. The game will include characters from multiple Sega video game franchises including Sonic the Hedgehog, and many others that you’ll recognize. The biggest difference between this new Sonic game and Mario Kart is the vehicles, though.

In Sega’s new Sega game, the vehicles transform between normal cars, aircraft, and boats depending on the race environment. The racing environments are also based on past Sega videogame franchises. For instance, one of the tracks is based on the Super Monkey Ball Temple Trouble environment.

Sega will offer the game for the PS Vita, PS3, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, and PC download late in 2012. I would assume that launch date means sometime around Christmas. You can check out more screenshots of Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed over on Flickr.

The transforming vehicles make this look like an interesting racing game, what do you think?

Sony has announced that it’s working on a new video game called PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. As the title suggests, this video game will have characters from some of the coolest and most popular games that have ever hit the PlayStation series of game consoles. The game is being developed for the PS3 and is a four-person fighter with online aspects.

The game will have characters such as Sweet Tooth, Kratos, Parappa, Fat Princess, Colonel Radec, and Sly Cooper. The game will also feature characters from games published by third-party developers. Each of the characters will have special attacks and stages along with music smashed up from various game titles.

The game will feature four player head-to-head battles, and will have multiple game modes. Those game modes will include team battles, practice modes, and the ability to fight online against friends and other players. Online multiple player tournaments, special event battles, and custom matches are among the online features. Sony isn’t offering a launch date for the game at this time.

When it comes to shooters, I really enjoy playing as a sniper. I get a sick thrill of taking out an enemy when he does even know I’m there. You can bet I was interested when I heard Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 was coming to the PC and game consoles this year. Originally, the game set to launch last month and sadly, that didn’t happen.

The game has a new launch date and I’m bummed to say it’s not for several more months – with the launch now slated for August 21. With the number of screenshots that have been turning up lately, it’s clear that the game will have very good graphics. It’s also clear that there will be lots of gray matter and blood blasting into the air.

The game uses the Crytek CryEngine 3 game engine so will be a top-notch graphically. It also promises a new AI system, more challenges, and other cool changes from the original. I hope that the developer doesn’t reschedule the launch again; I’m really looking forward to playing this game.

Microsoft has announced the official launch date for the next title in Halo franchise. The next installment is Halo 4 and it will launch globally on November 6, 2012. That is just in time for the holiday season and I know a bunch of Xbox 360 gamers that will be getting this as an early present from Santa.

As mentioned before this game is being developed by 343 Industries. The game will see the return of the iconic Master Chief character. The game is set four years after the events in Halo 3 with Master Chief confronting his destiny with the fate of the universe in his hands. Microsoft says that the game “aims to set a new standard for interactive entertainment.”

We waited a long time to see Master Chief back in a Halo game. Halo 3 was launched in 2007 and that was his last appearance. You can pre-order Halo 4 over at Amazon for $59.99(USD) now. How many of you are notifying employers now that you won’t be at work on November 6th?

Last week all we had was a couple leaked images and some speculation to go on when it came to Crysis 3. I mentioned that we expected more details soon and today those details came thanks to EA and Crytek. We don’t have a specific launch date at this point, what we know is Crysis 3 will launch in the spring of 2013.

Some of you are probably crying right now, yes that’s a full year from now. For that much of a wait, the game had better rock, and rock hard. Players will again fill the Nanosuit of Prophet as he heads to the New York on a revenge mission against Cell Corporation. The mission will take place across seven different Nanodome environments.

You will be able to pre-order the game early and depending on what you pre-order you can get one of four different pre-order bonus packs. If you pre-order directly from Origin, you can get the Hunter Edition of the game that comes with a special Hunter Nanosuit and players get XP boost for online play to level 5 along with access early to the signature bow and attachments. Players also pre-order other packs via retailers such as the Stalker Pack, Overkill Pack, and Predator Pack. Each of those packs will give access to a different weapon early in the multiplayer version of the game. The game can be pre-ordered for $59.99 (USD).

EA plans on releasing the first official trailer for the game on 4/23/2012. You can sign up over at the Crysis 3 website to be notified when it’s released.

It seems like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has generated more than its share of memes in the short time it has been on the market. First it was the whole “I used to be an “xxxx” too, until I took an arrow to the knee.” Then FUS RO DAH got its proper share of the meme treatment. If you’re fan of the game and you play on Xbox 360, you want to get the patch coming out later this month which will let you really get your shout on.

The patch will add support for over 200 voice commands on Xbox 360 version of the game using the Kinect. The most awesome part is that those commands will include dragon shouts such as FUS RO DAH. Yes, prepare anyone who lives in the home with you now before this patch lands or they will think you are crazy.

The voice commands will also support all sorts of other features including hotkey options, follower and menu commands. There will be other features added an update as well. But, let’s be honest, you’re not paying attention anymore, you’re probably running around the house screaming FUS RO DAH!

I’ll be honest, when I bought Mass Effect 3 I wasn’t happy that the game forced me to install Origin to be able to play the game. The last thing I want is one more memory hogging program running all the time on my computer. At least Origin had the decency to leak some images from Crysis 3 as a reward.

A large banner and small box art for Crysis 3 Limited Edition turned up on Origin today. In addition to the banner, product listings turned up for Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. Obviously since the game isn’t available for pre-order yet, the add to cart and more info buttons weren’t working .

The images appear to be the main character we’re used to seeing firing a bow of some sort. I can see buildings in the background making it appear that the next game will be set in another urban environment. I love the Crysis series, and can’t wait for this game to come out. We don’t have long to wait to find out more, as the game is expected to be officially announced on April 16th.

Of all the Call of Duty games I have played, I really like Black Ops the best. I’ve been hoping a sequel would be announced and now some details have leaked to fulfill that dream. According to a post on the Black Ops forum which was pulled down by Activision, Black Ops 2 is said to be launching on November 6 of this year. That is certainly some good news for geeks looking to get new video games for Christmas.

The game promises a highly-improved single player game and more focus on Hardcore mode. One of one the modes supposedly being added to the game is called Escort with two modes from the previous game carrying over including Drop Zone and Kill Confirmed. A couple of modes are rumored to be getting cut from the game including Team Defender and Infected.

Other tips include that there will be 15 prestiges over 50 ranks with the maximum prestige level of 90. You can check out the full list of rumored Black Ops 2 features over on CVG. November 6 is a long time to wait, I hope the game doesn’t end up getting delayed and is at least as good as the original. Are you looking forward to this game?

I’ve had several friends over the years talk me into trying to play World of Warcraft with them over the years. I gave it a go on more than one occasion and always left after a few days because to me the game was rather boring. I do like Star Wars: The Old Republic, though so considering the games are very similar in gameplay, you’d think I like WoW. For those of you still into the MMORPG, an expansion pack for World of Warcraft is coming soon called Mists of Pandaria.

The first time I saw the image above, I thought someone at Blizzard had been watching too much Kung Fu Panda, and I still think that. The picture here is blatant leaner, meaner version of Po. If you are a big fan of the game, Blizzard promises that Mists isn’t the last expansion pack for the aging franchise.

In fact, Blizzard COO Paul Sams says that the fifth expansion pack to come sometime after Mists is already in the development stages. Rest assured as long as World of Warcraft is raking in the money, Blizzard will continue to make more expansion packs.

The last time I really had to look hard to find a video game I wanted was way back in the day when Goldeneye was the most popular game in the realm. Now, EA is running a marketing stunt for Mass Effect 3 and this may be the coolest marketing gimmick in the history of video games.

Next week, the publisher will attach copies of Mass Effect 3 to weather balloons and launch them from New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London, and Paris. Each of the game copies will have a GPS tracking device and you can follow where the game copies are via the Mass Effect website.

If you follow the location of the games closely and figure out where they landed, head to the landing site. If you’re the first to find the game, you get to keep it. That would put one most anticipated video games of the year in your hands a week before the official March 6 launch. I can only imagine the loot you could rack up on eBay if you put a copy up for sale early.

I would certainly look for one of the games. This is a much cooler gimmick than that time EA sent out brass knuckles to promote Godfather II, and then asked people to mail them back, both of which were illegal. At least this time EA isn’t breaking any laws. (Unless the FAA has something to say about it.)

They’re all pretty funny, the one at the beginning were the player is running through the city as the dragon burns things to the ground while Andy screams like a little girl is hilarious. However, my favorite, is the character sitting at the table and Andy is complaining that no one has brought him chips and salsa. Priceless. It makes me wish Andy did voiceover work on my copy. You can check out the video below to listen for yourself.

Unlike many games, Skyrim actually had some high-quality voice actors. In fact, much of the cast is made up of award-winning actors you may have seen on film. That said, I think I still like Andy’s version better.

If you are a fan of the Mass Effect franchise, an interview that surfaced recently will make you giddy with anticipation. The new Mass Effect 3 game is coming before you know it and the devs of the game are saying that the new title will delve deeper into the story than ever before, and that Commander Shepard will get more emotion.

I will admit that Shepard was rather robotic in past titles. According to an interview that is on YouTube, ME 3 will delve deeper into the story and go more in the direction of a movie stylistically. The new story won’t rule out new gamers to the franchise stepping into the game and understanding what is going on either.

Writer Mac Walters said, “In ME3 one of the big things we want to be able to do is to really deepen Shepard as a character. So you really get to express what your Shepard is feeling and going through throughout the war.” I think the Mass Effect franchise would make an awesome movie trilogy. I read a book set in the game universe and it was great. Mass Effect 3 ships March 6th, and is already up for pre-order.

This news makes me nervous, since I can’t recall ever playing a good Doctor Who game. I know they have tried before, but it’s one of those properties that just never quite comes together right in game form. I’m thinking Star Trek too.
The game will arrive in early 2012 for Playstation 3, PS Vita and PC. Supermassive Games is the developer and all we really know is that the you can take on the role of Doctor and River Song as they explore the universe over multiple time periods.

I hold out some hope that this will be a great Doctor Who game, but I’m not holding my breath. However it turns out, you can be sure that it will have Daleks, a fez, several uses of the sonic screwdriver and River saying “Spoilers!” a few times.

I am a really big fan of the Hitman franchise of video games. I can say with certainty that this was the only third-person franchise I ever really liked. A new installment in the franchise is coming soon called Hitman Absolution. The game has a new mode made just for veterans of the series.

The special difficulty setting in the came rewards methodical stealth play. I never did well at being sneaky in the game. I always preferred to go in guns a blazing, which was against what the game was about, but nonetheless a ton of fun.

A new achievement for the game is in place called “Stealth Assassin” that rewards the sneaky and smarter play. I’ll just skip that mode and continue making a noisy mess when it hits the PC. Hitman Absolution is headed to the PC, Xbox, and PS3 soon.

Back in college, I had this friend who breathed, ate, and slept with nothing in mind but his video games. Counter Strike, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy - you name it, he’s played. He also failed classes regularly, but last I heard, he’s into his final semester at school already. Anyway, one thing my friend and I noticed about him was that he sometimes came to class on a certain day wearing the same clothes as he did yesterday.

Turns out, he was pulling a different kind of all-nighter, at the an Internet cafe located near the school, that is. I don’t think the Laundry Arcade Concept is targeted only to people who are like him, but I’m sure he’d be ecstatic with this design by Lee Wei Chen.

Basically, the Laundry Arcade works like this: you put your dirty stuff into the washing machine, insert some coins, and start playing. As long as you’re still alive in the game, your laundry will keep tumbling. When you run out of lives, you need to put it more coins to resume the game (and resume doing your laundry.)

I don’t think this will be a hit for those who are in a hurry to do their laundry, but it is a fun way to get the younger ones to do their laundry.

It’s been a while since I went down over to the local arcade, but I went crazy with the racing games the last time I was there. I’m a really bad driver, so crashing and veering off the road without any real consequences was a welcome change for me.

But more than that, I was really impressed with how much racing games have evolved to more interactive games. For example, the seat moved with each turn I made, and the whole chair would vibrate or lurch forward whenever I crashed into something (which happened pretty often.)

However, the OutRun AR project is totally in a league of its own, because it’s basically a video game that has been brought into the real world. This project of Garnet Hertz’s first made waves in 2009, and after a couple of years, he’s finally done with it.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Hertz, an informatics researcher from the University of California Irvin, made OutRun IRL a reality by incorporating the classic driving game into an electric golf cart that has been fitted with cameras and custom software that can roughly render what’s actually in front of you in using retro-style arcade graphics.

For the future, Hertz and his fellow researchers hope that their technology could somehow be used to create AR-based wheelchairs to help the disable and maybe even develop some video game-based therapy and remedies for disabled gamers.

Say “I Do” with a Puzzling Tetris Wedding Cake

It’s almost June and the wedding season is high up in the air. My sister and her longtime boyfriend of ten years just tied the knot a couple of weekends ago and I’m still weaning myself off the wedding bug (which makes me want to lie down in bed all day eating wedding cake. Pathetic, I know.)

But anyway, while at the reception, I overheard a conversation between some guests who were arguing about the state of marriages these days. The conversation ended with one of the women saying that she finds it puzzling as to why people still get married when a lot of them end up in messy divorces or prolonged separations.

So when I saw this Tetris Wedding cake, my thoughts went right back to those two women who were arguing the merits of marriage. I would love to have met or seen more of the wedding of the couple who decided that their wedding cake should pay homage to one of the greatest classical video games of all time. It seems like the couple went for a more literal take on the conversation that those women had at my sister’s wedding: puzzling but it’s not something you can’t figure out with time and a little practice.

The road to tying the knot can be long and arduous (as my sister’s was) or it can be quick like a whirlwind romance (like some of my other sister’s early twenty-something friends getting married after 2 or 3 months of knowing each other.) Whatever pushes people to finally take the plunge and make a lifetime commitment is, indeed, puzzling. But frankly, I don’t think that would matter much if you’re saying “I Do” (and not “I Do?”) to the person who you know you want to spend the rest of your life with.

Note bene: Excuse the writer for coming up with a sappier than usual blog post about a Tetris-inspired wedding cake. She blames it all, once more, on the wedding bug. *Achoo!*
