I used to be a sucker for novels. Now I’m a sucker for graphic novels and comic books. Maybe it’s because I did so much reading back in college that I don’t find reading long blocks of just text fun anymore, but there’s just something about seeing the images right then and there on the page rather than just having to imagine it all in your mind.

I recently went on a book buying spree on eBay, and let me just say that when all of my books arrive, I’ll have enough to fill a small library. That said, I’ve been on the lookout for a new bookshelf, and when I saw this vintage car bookshelf, let me just say that I was literally blown away.

This vintage car bookshelf was just one of the unique, re-worked objects in the interior of the impressive Dutch Mountain home decorated by design studio Denieuwegeneratie. The bookshelf is made from an actual Jaguar, with the engine removed and the trunk transformed into a cabinet. A large rectangle has been cut out on the roof and shelves fitted, where your books are to be placed.

There’s no chance I’ll be getting a bookshelf as cool as this, though, but really, it’s just a cool sight for sore eyes.

If you have a few old vintage cameras that are collecting dust, you might want to do what Flickr user Jason Hull has done. Jason takes vintage cameras from the 1950s and 1960s and turns them into retro nightlights. Don’t worry, he doesn’t hurt rare cameras or cameras that are in pristine condition – just the heavily mass produced ones.

There’s something about the idea of vintage cameras turned into nightlights that appeals to the kid in me. Anything that keeps those monsters at bay is a good thing, whether they are under the bed or in the closet. But will these scare both vintage and new monsters or just the vintage ones?

Sometimes when we think that technology is marching forward, it isn’t as a big of a deal as we thought and you find out that someone has had the technology for years already. Take the Chevy Volt for instance. These cars have a lot of cutting edge technology packed inside. Or so we thought. However, there’s one single 115-year-old car that can match it’s mileage.

The Chevy Volt will cost you $32,000 today, but the Roberts electric vehicle – built all the way back in 1896 – gets 40 miles to a charge, just like the Volt. It actually was built 12 years before Ford’s Model T, for that matter. The current owner of the vehicle says that it runs great, even competing in some classic car derbies and doing okay. No word on what he paid for this antique car, but it is one of a kind, built before mass production. It’s so unique that the steering mechanism is a tiller instead of a wheel.

Yes there really is an electric car this old. “The man” didn’t want you to know about it so that he could sell you his gas and oil, or so I hear. Sorry Chevy, you’ll have to up your game now.

iPod and iPhone docks are a dime a dozen, and it takes something special to get noticed in the plethora of different products. Check out this beautifully restored 1958 tabletop radio, that was modified to function as an iPod dock.

Graham Browne wanted to mod the original controls so that they would work with a modern Klipsch iPod dock. He conceived the dock after seeing an old radio in an antiques store in Kansas City. For the build, he chose a retro-style grille cloth from a Fender guitar amp and brushed aluminum trim to complement the original radio.

Thusfar, Graham has built three vintage iPod docks, but it’s not clear if they all look like this, or if they’re built from different radio styles. He says that in future he’d like to work with microcontrollers and RGB LEDs that would fade through colors instead of just plain white LEDs that he used in his builds.

Can you imagine why a robot would need to yodel? I’ve got no idea because yodeling is fricking annoying in my book. Radio Man was featured in the April 1939 issue of Popular Science, and was the Slim Whitman of early android technology.

Radio Man was created by a Swiss engineer named August Huber. Ah, now the yodeling makes sense! He’s 7 feet tall and took 10 years to complete. It supposedly could walk, talk, sing, or yodel at his master’s command. It was supposedly powered by batteries hidden in the legs, but honestly, this makes me wonder if this was a work of fiction. Batteries in the legs? I thought that back in the 1930s it would have needed something like a truck filled with batteries to power it.

Even though “cute aliens” are the idea behind Franco Brambilla‘s art, what I really find interesting is the funny vignettes into which Brambilla has injected these Star Wars vehicles and ships.

I’ve never considered an AT-AT or an AT-ST cute, but these paintings, which are supposed to look like postcards, made me chuckle. At first, I had to look a few times to realize what I was looking at.

What’s really cool is that these funny postcards are available in a variety of ways, from limited edition prints via his website, to actual postcards and calendars. There are even t-shirts! Brambilla’s project was started in 2007 and is still ongoing. Let’s hope it keeps on going.

Designed by Matt Richmond, the iVictrola’s design and functionality harkens back to the olden days. Way way back to the olden days, when there were no electronics. It acoustically amplifies the sound coming from an iPhone or iPod Touch – no need for a plug or batteries.

The sound passes through a hole in the walnut “dock” and up to the vintage Magnavox horn.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Obviously the amplification won’t be as powerful or as clean as what you’ll get from powered speakers, such as the similarly designed Little Horn. At least the iVictrola requires zero wires or electricity. Plus the horn is gorgeous.

Unfortunately the iVictrola isn’t available right now, but do keep an eye out for it at Design Without Reach’s limited-edition online store. At least you still have time to save up $400 (USD) for this lovely amplifier.

This old Bakelite Zenith record player has even had its turntable replaced with a visible DVD-ROM drive – which looks absolutely perfect with those Verbatim simulated vinyl CD-Rs. Modder Alvin Barber (aka “Mach”) completely refurbished this old 1951 Zenith H664 Cobra-matic phonograph, and filled its guts with the brains of a modern computer. The Bakelite shell and glowing accent lighting give the Cobra-matic a wonderfully retro feel that makes it look like something you might find somewhere in Rapture the next time you play Bioshock. Come to think of it, you might even be able to play Bioshock on this thing.

Now you might notice that some of the photos show a different interior configuration. That’s because Mach wasn’t satisfied with his original attempt, and recently rebuilt his original Core 2 Duo-based mod to run on a more powerful Core 2 Quad CPU, and added a RAM cooler to keep it from overheating. After you’ve checked out the pics above, head over to The Best Case Scenario to see a full worklog for this amazing casemod.

Shoot More”). The bazookas have been deactivated so I guess it’s okay to let kids play with it. That’s if they can lift the thing.

The bazookas are made of aluminum and were manufactured in Spain in the 1960s and 70s. Each one measures a whopping 70″ long, and is equipped with an optical sight, eyecup, shield, strap and bipod. It looks so awesome!!! And heavy.

Here’s a new and different idea for a DIY iPod case: use pages of old comics. A little masking tape, a few pages of killer images, and the ability to cut a straight line with scissors is all it took to assemble this chic custom case.

The blue-tinted case, shown above, was the first, made from a found box of vintage French comics. The black-and-white case? That was the second project by Craftster member julibooli, who found the first project so easy that she immediately followed it up by repeating the process for a friend. I wish more of my friends would make me gadget cases from nifty artwork. Or that they could use scissors.

Think they look good from the front? Check out the back!

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that look the coolest.

What we actually have here is a very rare Russian relic from the early 1980s. The Elektronika-7 (Электроника-7) clock was built using vacuum tubes, not LEDs to drive its unique bluish-green display.

The old industrial clock uses 16 segmented tubular vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs) to form its digits.

This extreme rarity can be yours if you manage to score the winning bid in the next few hours (currently at $150 plus shipping). Check out the auction over on eBay for more details.

These DIY headphones look fantastic! I can only (probably erroneously) assume the sound quality matches the look.

Flickr user j.rusten furniture studio shared the story behind these headphones he made for himself. He says, “I adapted a pair of normal safety earphones for speakers, and added a vintage look. I cut the outside portion of the cups off, replaced with a curved flat sheet of plastic -over which I mounted the grill (from an old record player) and the cork which I sanded to shape. Then I painted the rest of the shell green, and installed some $50 drivers.”

I really like the funky 70s aesthetic of this particular pair, but I especially love the idea that folks could make them to suit their own personal style and color scheme. Although, the likelihood of me successfully sanding down curved cork so I can sport these is basically nil. I’m just impatient like that. Plus, where does one find old record player parts to pillage?

If you’ve ever wanted to build up a collection of video game nostalgia, but don’t have the patience to dig through garage sales and flea markets to put it all together, check out this insane auction.

A dedicated video game fanatic going by the name of sengoku has decided to part ways with his massive collection which is almost like a self-contained museum of gaming history.

The auction includes a huge array games, consoles and accessories including Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Atari Lynx, Coleco ColecoVision, Coleco Gemini, Coleco Telstar, Commodore 64/128, GCE Vectrex, Mattel Aquarius, Mattel Intellivision, Mattel Odyssey 2, Microsoft Xbox, Microsoft Xbox 360, APF TV Fun, Miscellaneous Handheld Games, Miscellaneous PC Games, SC Eight Thousand, Sega Pods, Miscellaneous TV Games, NEC Turbo Duo, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo NES, Nintendo Nintendo 64, Nintendo Super NES, Nintendo Virtual Boy, Nintendo Wii, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, Sega Saturn, SNK Neo Geo, SNK Neo Geo Pocket, Sony Playstation, Sony Playstation 2, Texas Instruments TI 99/4A and even the VM Labs Nuon (go Nuon!)

To put the size of the auction in perspective, the picture below just represents the Sega Dreamcast items in the auction. There are similar amounts of gear for many of the other systems as well.

The collection includes a whopping 1768 video game items, including a number rare games and accessories. The seller has estimated the value of the collection at $14,639, but the entire lot can be your for the low, low “Buy-It-Now” price of $10,979. Of course, you’ll have to drop over $1,000 to ship this massive collection to your house.

The list of items is so long that it won’t even fit in the eBay listing, but you can check out the full detail of everything in the collection here.

If you’ve always wanted to build up a huge collection of vintage console games, now is you chance to do it in one fell swoop. Some guy over in Hamburg, Germany has decided to sell off his collection of over ninety classic (and not so classic) video game consoles on eBay.

The massive auction includes such classic consoles as the original Intellivision, NEC Turbo Grafx 16, Nintendo NES and SNES. It also features some vintage stinkers like the Nintendo Virtual Boy, the Odyssey 200 and number of crummy Pong clones. A couple of real rarities, such as the Game Axe portable Nintendo clone and the Sega Nomad round out the pack.

Just about the only thing missing is my personal fave, the Vectrex. A number of games are also included in the massive sale. If you look closely, you’ll also see some real treats like the original Samba De Amigo maraca controllers for the Sega Dreamcast. Starting price for the auction is 3000 Euro (appx. $3941 USD.)

Personally, I prefer the simplicity of emulators such as MESS. They take up a lot less space and don’t cost four grand.
