The most recent two generations of the Apple TV are pretty slick, but nondescript black boxes, designed to hide in your home theater or living room setup without taking up much space or eyeball real estate. But if you’d like to make your plain black box a little less of a plain black box, you’ll want to grab one of these skins to spiff it up.

This skin looks just like my old NES console, except smaller, with curved edges, and no place to stick any cartridges. It won’t make your Apple TV any more capable of playing Super Mario Bros., but it’ll still make it look cool. The skin is one of many cool and geeky vinyl skins available from Killer Duck Decals, and sells for just $10 (USD) over on Etsy.

I only wish it came with a skin that made the Apple remote control look like an NES controller. Though if you do use your iPhone as a remote, you could go with one of these:

Each of the handmade designs is custom-made, including the label color, style, and genre of the record. The design can also be flipped 180 degrees if you need that for the proper Feng Shui.

Do you love your old vinyl records, but have nothing to play them on? Then check out this amplifier/dock solution for iPhones. It was actually made out of a vinyl that’s been reshaped to work as an acoustic amplifier. It’s an good way of reusing old records when you no longer play them.

It was created by British product designer Paul Cocksedge who uses a modified 12-inch vinyl record to create each acoustic speaker. It’s an interesting design, leveraging its horn-shape to amplify the sound. To make each dock, he gently heats and then molds the vinyl record, taking care not to damage its original grooves.

They can be bought in the UK from select retailers, and I also found it on the Openers site in Japan, where it’s listed for 7875 yen (~$97 USD).

We have seen plenty of the USB connected turntables over the years that can play your vinyl records and convert the track to digital files. The devices are perfect for the people that want their old school tunes on an iPod or other MP3 player. ION has been making and offering these sort of things for a while.

At CES 2012, the company has rolled out a new turntable called the Duo Deck. It gets its name because not only will it convert your 33-1/3or 45 RPM vinyl records to digital tracks, it also has a cassette player in the back that will convert your 80′s cassette collection to digital too. The deck also works as a standalone turntable and tape player, thanks to a built-in speaker. It even will run on batteries.

The device comes with EZ Converter software and Audacity software to clean up the tracks once they make their way to your PC or Mac. ION didn’t talk price or availability yet, but it should be around $100 or so I’d figure. ION is rarely way out there with their pricing. This may be the best way yet to get those Milli Vanilli cassette and records onto your iPod.

I used to like putting together puzzles, but I have gotten out of the habit over the years. These awesome pixel puzzles might just rekindle my love for puzzles, since they aren’t just puzzles, you can actually use them to decorate the walls of your house.

Puxxle is the brainchild of two sisters, who have always been fascinated by puzzles. They took this love for puzzles, and combined it with pixel art to come up with these. Puxxle tiles are adhesive vinyl, and will work on a number of surfaces. They can be easily removed and shouldn’t leave any residue, though once removed, they can’t be reused.

Unlike a jigsaw puzzle, though, Puxxles include an instruction guide to help make sure you get the pattern right. They come in a variety of designs including a squirrel, alligator, hedgehog, reindeer and shark, as well as a cactus if you’re into plants more than animals.

The kits are available from the Puxxle website for €18 (~$24 USD) to €45 ($59 USD).

Are you sick of the minimalistic design of your Apple products? Or maybe you just want to make them stand out? Or maybe everyone in your office has a Magic Trackpad and you don’t want yours to get mixed up with theirs? Well then don’t bring it to work. Or get something like these Carbon Fiber Magic vinyl stickers.

Made by H Sterling Cross (yeah, I’m not sure if that’s just one man or an insurance company trying to branch out either), the stickers are easy to apply and remove. And in the case of the Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse, the stickers will also convert the gadgets’ smooth surface from smooth to textured. The stickers are also available in four colors – black, graphite, silver and white.

You can order the Carbon Fiber Magic vinyl stickers from the official website. The keyboard sticker sells for $12 (USD), the Magic Trackpad sticker sells for $14, while the Magic Mouse stickers sells for $29. You can also order a brand new Magic Mouse with the sticker for $99.

It seems like there will be Carbon Fiber Magic stickers for other Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad as well. But obviously you’re free to stick ‘em on anything you wish, whether it’s an Apple gadget or an Alaskan Malamute. Carbon fiber not your thing? H Sterling Cross also sells wood vinyl stickers on his Etsy shop.

If you’ve ever thought about tearing open your MacBook to see what was inside, you could always head over to iFixit for one of their tutorials. But if you’re too chicken to get out the Torx driver and start going to town, here’s another solution.

This vinyl decal sticks to the outside of your MacBook, giving it the illusion that it’s had its cover removed, and its guts are hanging out for all to see. The decals are made by CrystalMacBook, and are actually based on 1:1 scale photographs of the innards of the MacBook, and precision-cut to fit.

They’re available for the 13-inch or 15-inch MacBook for $16.99 (USD) each over on Etsy. The only thing cooler would be an actual see-through case for the MacBook, so you could see the real guts of the system – like this iPhone mod.

There are a bunch of gaming geeks out there that really like Minecraft, with its blocky game play and immense level-editing freedom. If you are among those fans of the game and happen to need a new smartphone, you need to hit up eBay while this auction is going on. The auction is for a special Minecraft-edition smartphone.

The smartphone itself is a new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and it has pixelated Minecraft blocks all over the front and back of phone thanks to custom graphics along with the Minecraft logo. The screen of the phone also has Minecraft wallpaper too that matches up with the graphics on the back and side for full coverage with pixel block graphics.

The phone is a special edition being auctioned off for charity by Mojang, creators of the game. Whatever the smartphone sells for will be donated to charity. When I wrote this the bid amount was up to $1,350 (USD) with five days left to go.

You can take one look at my room (and entire house) and surmise with a glance that I don’t really have much room to spare with all the junk I have lying around the place. Old books, clothes, magazines, bags, shoes– you name it, it’s probably hanging (or perched) somewhere in my messy abode. It’s not that I don’t make a conscious effort to keep my place clean, because I do. I even set aside my Saturday mornings just to clean up and make the place a bit more neat and guest-worthy, but somewhere in the middle of the week, things start to get messy again.

That said, there is obviously no way that I could still fit a vinyl record player on my desk to listen to some old-time classics to unwind after a long day. You could argue that I could just find an mp3 file of the tracks and listen to them on my iPod, but I tell you, it’s just not the same.

And it’s probably folks like me that the guys over at Ion Audio are thinking about when they came up with the Vertical Vinyl record player. It’s a huge space saver and lets you play your records while being stealthily perched on your wall. It’s priced a bit steeply though at £79.99 (~$131 USD), but if you’re interested, you can get one from Firebox.

That line from Corinne Bailey Rae’s song just began playing in my head the moment I saw this quirky and creative clock. These clocks are the brainchild of artist Pavel Sidorenko, who created a whole range of these wall clocks from recycled 12″ vinyls.

Ironically, what makes it a bit more difficult to read the time is also what makes the clock so darned good-looking.

You can get one of these beauties for £34.99 (~$58 USD) from Firebox. Since they’re made from old records, the clock you might receive might feature a different label in the middle.

Today we have portable audio players like the iPod that play digital files on the go. Before that, we had CD players like the Discman, and before that we had cassette tape players like the Walkman. And before that? People had the Mikiphone, a portable phonograph that played 10″ vinyl records.

Manufactured in Switzerland from 1924 to 1927, the Mikiphone had no batteries – you had to wind up its crank to power it. But what I find strangest about the Mikiphone is that as you can see, it’s way smaller than the medium it reads. The device itself is said to be as small as a CD, but it’s still quite a stretch to say that it’s a “pocket” version because it’s quite chunky. Also, you didn’t just put a record on the middle and press a button for the Mikiphone to do its thing; you had to unfold, assemble and screw in some parts:

Check out the link to Core77 below for other primitive gadgets, like the first “camera phone” – a gramophone with a camera – and a portable electric phonograph. Thank goodness for the nerds, the designers, the engineers and everyone else who keep on improving our technology. The next time you complain about how your media player’s battery life only lasts half a day or that you can’t store your entire music collection in it, think of all this crap that your hip grandparents had to deal with. What we practically have nowadays are tiny boxes of magic.

You can order Pixel Perfect camera vinyl decals from Scribble on Everything. They come in three packs, each of them selling for $36 (USD). The Pixel Perfect Camera Collection has 30 decals 2 to 5 inches wide. The SLR pack contains 10 decals 8.25 to 9.25 inches wide, while the medium format pack contains 10 decals that are 5.5 to 6.5 inches wide. I wonder if you can cut them out and fit them on actual cameras.

Anyone who grew up in the 1970s or 1980s has seen and probably used one of the Polaroid instant cameras with the pics that shoot out the front and develop themselves. The cameras are largely extinct, and the film is scarce. If you want to give a bit of cool retro style to your iPhone and like that old Polaroid you need this sticker.

The sticker is for the iPhone 4, and makes the back of the camera look like the white and rainbow covered OneStep instant. My parents had the black one, but I do recall this camera from my youth. The sticker has a cut out over the lens and flash so you can still shoot pics. The sticker should keep scratches off the back of the device too.

What this needs is an app that doesn’t show the pics until you shake the phone for a while and makes that noise the camera makes when the photos shoot out. You can pick one up for about $6 over at PhotoJojo.

When I was a kid, all the music I listened too came on vinyl. I had the Dukes of Hazzard album on vinyl, and the coolest thing about it was that the record had a picture of the Dukes printed on it. I loved that record. Vinyl has disappeared for the most part, but you can still get some music on vinyl and the coolest records I have seen since that Dukes album are these CMYK EPs by James Blake.

Apparently, Blake is a DJ that samples other tunes and makes dance/hip-hop music. The cool thing about these records isn’t the music, but the records themselves. You can get the EP vinyl in translucent cyan, magenta, and yellow colors.

When you get all three and overlap them, you get the CMYK color model and it’s really cool. I would totally hang these on my wall since I no longer have a record player and loathe dance music.

It looks like someone is taking the whole steampunk thing a bit too far with this steam-powered record player. Would you want one? Seriously, I wouldn’t. My Technics SL1200s does the job fine. However, this thing is still pretty amazing.

This steampunk record player really adheres to what steampunk really should be: powered by steam! It was made by Simon Janson from Auckland, New Zealand, who mated steam-power with an Arduino processor. The engine was cobbled together from bits and pieces. The boiler was made a copper water pipe and a bespoke platter and base is used to spin the records. Simon says that the software still needs a few tweaks, but the hardware is solid.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Of course, all the sound from the steam pump and mechanism sort of interferes with the music the turntable cranks out, but I don’t think he built this for audiophile sound quality.

Looking to play a really cruel trick on your buddy with an iPhone 4? Then grab one of these clever decals which turns the back of the iPhone into the front. Or is it the other way around?

Thanks to Apple’s ingenious smooth gorilla glass front and back on the iPhone 4, you can easily apply decals to the backside, and the guys at Topdecal took advantage of this with their clever decal design. Just slap this removable vinyl label on the back of your pal’s iPhone 4 when they’re not looking, then flip the phone upside-down from where they left it. Next time they go to answer a call, hilarity (followed by a swift beating) should ensue.

You can grab one over at Topdecal’s Etsy shop for $9.99 (USD). If they’re sold out, keep checking – they seem to be replenishing as they sell ‘em.
