Like many people involved with computers, I have a fascination with keyboards. While I rarely look closely at keyboards these days, I use them constantly. They are still the fastest way of inputting data into a computer. There has yet to be a viable alternative for keyboards, and I think it will take quite some time before this changes. This is why I’d like to have my own QWERTY walls please.

Instead of putting up new wallpaper, Sarah Frost experimented with keys from keyboards. She used thousands of computer keyboards, smashed them to pieces, and used the individual keys to create this technological alternative to wallpaper. This QWERTY Wall is definitely something that all computer enthusiasts will enjoy.

There are some funky hypnotic patterns integrated into these large pieces of art. Check them out at her site, or if you happen to be in NYC, head over to the James Hotel, where you can see one of her permanent installations.

Hollywood leaves little to the imagination, especially when it comes to the future of the human race. Artificial intelligence, mechanical extraterrestrial creatures, and even man-made robots that eventually “grow” a brain and decide to go against their human creators.

And then, of course, there’s the Zwischenräume, and it’s here, right here, right now.

It’s technically an “art project,” so it’s not some prototype for a robot some company may have in the works for the future. But what it does is hide behind walls and pummel through so that it can check what’s on the other side. It sounds interesting, yet beyond creepy and freaky at the same time.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The following is how the artist describes the Zwischenräume:

The installation embeds a group of autonomous robots into the walls of a gallery. They punch holes through the walls to inspect what’s outside, signal each other, and conspire. As if the walls had ears and a hammer to pierce holes for their eyes to see.

I just think it’s a poetic way of describing a wall-punching robot that knows no boundaries.

A while ago, we reported about the QLOCKTWO, a stylish wall clock that used words instead of numbers to show the time. It was somewhat of a big clock, and it was also quite expensive (~$1,100), which is why I kind of like this new, smaller desktop version. This model is is the QLOCKTWO Touch and it’s touch-sensitive and comes packed with LEDs.

The sharp text outlines are easily visible thanks to the bright LEDs inside. You can engage the snooze function by simply touching the clock. The clock is machined from a single block aluminum. It comes in seven different colors, and the front panel is held in place by magnets, so you can switch colors if you get bored. It’s also available in English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Russian and Spanish.

It also offers an alarm clock mode, which can be snoozed by simply touching the face of the clock. The reading light mode illuminates the entire clock face, switching on all 114 LEDs inside. Get ready to pay for all of this style, because the QLOCKTWO Touch sells for $599 to $650 (USD) at the Biegert & Funk store.

Nothing is a more annoying or uglier looking sight than all those little holes in the wall after removing the pins you used to tack up posters, reminders, and other sorts of similar paper paraphernalia. Teeny, tiny holes are okay; but when they’re pretty obvious and staring back at you like black, beady eyes, then it’s, er, not.

And that’s what the Ninjapins are looking to eliminate.

Inheriting the stealth and careful ways of the actual ninjas where the pins got their name from, they won’t leave those huge pinpricks that normal pins will. Instead, you’ll get something like the greater-than symbol once you remove them from you walls, which is a whole lot better looking and totally less noticeable.

The Ninjapins are available from Assiston, an online Japanese retailer, for around $5 (¥420) for a box of 5, and $10 (¥840) for 15.

The Irrational Numbers Clock is slightly more complicated that the Unit Circle Radian Wall Clock. Also, the fact that it looks like a blackboard has a certain scholarly appeal. While I am a mathematician, anyone with high-school math should be able to read this clock. That’s not because they’ll know what all these irrational numbers are, it’s just that all you just need to do is look at the position of the hands to figure out the time.

As a novelty clock, this one is pretty cool. If you don’t remember irrational numbers, they are the numbers which can’t be represented by simple fractions. The easiest example of this is the transcendental number π.

Unfortunately other than Pi, none of the other numbers are easy to figure out unless you are a math geek. Best keep a calculator handy if you buy this one. It’s available for $39.95 (USD) from Skymall. It’s going to be a rare clock on walls, of that much I am sure.

LEGO, it’s one of the greatest toy inventions known to man. There isn’t much you can’t do with some well-placed LEGO blocks. You can build weapons. You can build statues, and you can build walls. The latest gigantic LEGO construction to turn up is this wall that is in place in the Central Hall of World Trade Center, Amsterdam.

The giant wall is round and basically a room to itself that people can sit on and touch. It was built by a woman named Lene Rønsholt Wille. She spent 6-weeks on construction on the work called “Metaphorical Horizons.” The wall has a complex circular design with parts that have holes where bricks are recessed and other parts where the bricks stick out. Apparently, the concept was part of her graduation project.

While you could make a customizable pixel wall out of a bunch of iPhones, I kind of like the simplicity of this analog pixel wall.

Designer Amirkhan Abdurakhmanov (aka “Amirko“) created the concept for Change It!, an simple, ingenious way to create any design you want on your wall. You can arrange the pixel blocks to form fields of color, rainbows, patterns, and even your favorite video game characters if you want.

The Change It! wall system would be created from a series of prisms attached through rods, which could then be adjusted to a variety of angles to produce unique colors. Now I’m not sure exactly how the angled prisms could produce the sort of pure colors shown in thes conceptual designs, but it sure looks cool.

There’s no word on if or when the Change It! wall will ever be produced, so for now you’ll just have to build yourself that iPhone wall afterall.

We’re not really sure why anyone would go through the trouble of building humanoid wall-climbing robots like these ones. There are certainly faster ways to scale a wall. Maybe they made them just so bloggers like me would write about them? Who knows?

These three guys have been gradually climbing up and down a 15-minute wall in 20-minute intervals for more than half a year. Again, for no particular reason from what I can tell, except to entertain us.

The whole mechanic reminds me of the classic arcade game Crazy Climber. All they need is someone dropping flower pots, some windows that close on their hands, and a condor dropping eggs and poop on the climbers, and they’d be all set.

Mounting solutions that hang the iPad for a wall or stand it up on a tabletop are getting to be some of the more common accessories for the tablet. They are popular because people want to be able to view content and read while they are standing or sitting without having to hold the iPad in their hands. A new mount system from a company called Vogel has surfaced that will let you put the iPad in a lot of locations you probably never thought of.

The kit starts with a Vogel WallMount and BaseCover system for iPad that includes a cover to protect the back of the iPad and hold the tablet to the various mounts for different services. The cover has a special connector that holds the tablet to the WallMount, TabletMount, or CarMount.

The WallMount is a small button that can be screwed into most walls and rotates 360-degrees. The CarMount is a dock that secures between the posts of the headrests in most modern vehicles. The TableMount lets you sit the iPad on the table or a shelf and keep it upright. The devices will ship in the US in early 2011 and will hit Europe in October with the starter kit going for 79.99 euro (appx. $101 USD) and the CarMount and TableMount pricing are unknown at this time.

A boy from Cambridge, England has managed to figure out a way to climb a brick wall with not much more than a couple of vacuum cleaners.

Using a pair of 1,400-watt vacuums he purchased at UK retailer Tesco, Hibiki Kono hooked them up to a couple of large suction pads, and proceeded to ascend a vertical surface with the contraption strapped to his back and arms.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

As you can see from the video clip, Hibiki didn’t get too far up the wall, but we’re sure with a little persistence, he could climb anything he set his mind to – assuming there’s a long-enough power cord.

Even though the iPad was just announced, there are already plenty of concepts emerging that could take advantage of the device. This one is somewhat interesting, but dubious. It’s basically a huge display made from a bunch of refurbished/recycled iPads. (Once there are refurbished/recycled iPads to be had.)

This concept is by Clarke Hopkins Clarke from Melbourne Australia. They want to take a bunch of iPads, hook them up together into a giant matrix and use them to create massive touchscreen walls. The walls would then be used to produce multitouch interactive art and educational installations.

The fact that it’s modular is interesting, but the more you think about it, the less it makes sense. Standalone LCD screens are still much more cost-effective than iPads (even if they are refurbished). Of course, then you’d need some sort of computer system to power the displays themselves. And then touchscreen interfaces for them too. So maybe iPads would be the best way to pull this off. Or lots of iPhones.

Now I can barely stomach the idea of ascending one of those rock climbing walls you see at the gym, and now some masochist had to go and invent this.

The ClimbStation combines the concept of a treadmill with rock climbing to create a never-ending wall of pain. The system consists of a moving treadmill that continually advances the wall of grabby rock-like formations, torturing its victims until they fall. Thankfully, there’s a nice big comfy mat underneath.

The treadmill can move as fast as 17 meters a minute (just under a foot per second), which is way faster than anyone should ever have to climb anything. It’s also got a hydraulic tilting mechanism which lets the whole treadmill adjust between +15 to -30 degrees angles. At least it’s smart enough to automatically adjust its speed based on the skill level of the climber.

Here’s a video of the ClimbStation having its way with a willing victim (its inventor):

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Prices for ClimbStation systems start at €29,900 (over $42,000 USD), so you probably won’t be getting one of these for your home gym.

The Outlet Wall is obviously a bit of creative Photoshop work, but I think the concept is fun. Imagine all your walls completely covered with outlets, so you’ll never need to look for a place to plug in your electronic devices. Sure, rigging and wiring thousands of side-by-side wall outlets is completely impractical. And if you have kids in the house, you’d have to buy a crapload of outlet covers. I don’t care. I still like it.

Do you spend a good bit of your time in front of your computer monitor engrossed in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator? Now you can break down that pesky divide between the digital and real worlds with this clever magnetic photo board.

The designers over at Brazil’s Meninos (the same guys who gave us some oh-so-awesome iPhone coasters and pop art hard drives) created these wall-mountable magnetic photo boards that let you hold your pictures in place using those familiar palettes from Photoshop or Illustrator.

Each set comes with a bunch of magnetic palettes, menu bar and a contextual pop-up that you can stick on top of your photos. I always wondered why you couldn’t put your palettes at an angle on your computer. Seems like you should be able to do whatever you want with them – after all it is your computer, right?

Unfortunately, it looks like these are all based on the CS3 Mac versions, and not CS4, so the palettes don’t dock neatly on the side of the monitor. I really hope they include a tiny little spinning beachball magnet as shown in the photo below.

The PS and AI magnetic photo boards are available for pre-order over at the Meninos Shop in 30″ and 20″ widescreen versions, with prices ranging from $65 to $95 USD depending on size and whether you get magnets for one or both programs.

At least Meninos won’t want hundreds of dollars for an upgrade if and when they eventually make a CS4 version.

Anyone can play a game of Tetris; the Russian classic is available in dozens of formats, and there are clones and knock-offs aplenty. You can even go the Soylent Green route and make your Tetris out of people if you are so inclined. But why not step head and shoulders above the rest and plaster a perennial game of Tetris on your wall? You may never win with a wall-decal game, but you’ll also never lose.

If Tetris is not your retro look — or game — of choice, the aptly-named Etsy shop VinylWallDesign has a few other interesting choices for you: Pac-Man and Space Invaders. We’re talking about the classics here.

The shop features several simpler designs that aren’t influenced by classic games, just in case you prefer penguins to cunningly fitting falling blocks together for hours. Prices for the sets range from $20 to $65.

The Fragile Future 2 lighting fixture really lives up to its name. You see, each tiny light source is actually framed by the seed pods of a dandelion. Now why is it called the Fragile Future 2? Presumably, because the Fragile Future 1 was just a little TOO breakable.

Created by Lonneke Gordijn of the Dutch outfit known as DesignDrift, the Fragile Future 2 lamp combines the modern, linear look of circuit board traces and LED illumination with the contrasting organic shapes of puffy dandelion heads.

Each one is custom-built and is made from modular pieces, so you can build complex wall fixtures using anywhere from 3 to 50 light modules.

All I can say is that you’d better not sneeze anywhere around this thing.

The Fragile Future 2 is available from Generate LE.
