Watchmaker LAKS teamed up with MasterCard to develop Watch2Pay, a wristwatch with RFID technology. Aside from telling the time, Watch2Pay can be used to make payments simply by holding it next to a scanning device. Why? Because taking your credit card out of your wallet is way too much effort.

Inside each Watch2Pay is a SIM card that is linked to a MasterCard PayPass prepaid account; it’s the key to the wireless interface between the watch and the reader. For practicality’s sake, each Watch2Pay also comes with a more conventional prepaid card for establishments that don’t have PayPass readers or for when your Watch2Pay is nicked off of you. Watch the video below for a bit more info. Unless you’re a fan of post-hardcore music, my headache and I strongly suggest you put it on mute.

No offense to the band who made that soundtrack, but come on. Whatever happened to bland commercial music? It’s bland for a reason. Watch2Pay is currently available in Poland and in the United Kingdom, where it sells for £99 (~$153 USD). I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes its way to other first world countries. Checkout the official website for more info.

MINUS 8 Watches are the brainchild of Dana Krieger of Astro Studios. The name refers to the UTC -8 time zone of the West Coast of the USA. The recently completed watches exhibit that time is relative, meaning that everyone perceives time in a slightly different manner.

The process of anodizing aluminum and metal-finishing inspired Krieger to produce these visually-stunning timepieces. The gradient effect on the face of each MINUS 8 is created by layering gradually more intensely-colored discs of anodized metal.

“Time is a gradient and we use timepieces to slice that gradient into meaningful increments” says Dana. While they do look great, I’ll be curious to see how much they will sell for once they are offered for retail.

There are two watches in the collection: an automatic chronograph and a mechanical Quartz movement watch. No word yet on pricing or availability.

Remember Swatch watches from way back when? Well, the Swiss watch maker has unveiled its very first touchscreen watch called, what else? The Swatch Touch. It is expected to hit retailers next month and they look just as colorful and cool as their old watches.

They have ditched any and all control buttons in favor of a touchscreen and the design is clearly inspired by modern smartphones. The Touch features a large touch-sensitive LCD display with stylized digits that will let users sort through all of it’s functions and features. For instance, you can swipe between displays to view different time zones, access the chrono, set alarms, the timer and beep menus.

To start, these watches will come in six colors: camouflage, pink, purple, black, white and turquoise. They will be available on October 1st for £100 (~$156 USD).

The Tokyoflash Kisai Night Vision was submitted as a concept about a year ago and thanks to the user votes on the Tokyoflash website, it has become reality. It’s surprisingly easy to read once you figure out how to do so.

The hexagonal shaped metal watch is littered with LEDs. A button press reveals the time. The outer ring indicates the hours, while the minutes are displayed in the center using stylized digital numbers.

The case is made from matte black stainless steel, and comes in blue, red, or green on black LED versions. It also has date and alarm functions, which is cool. As with many of the recent Tokyoflash LED watches, you’ll need to recharge it about once a month via USB.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

There are about 300 charges per battery, and the battery can be replaced. Overall, the watch is pretty interesting. It’s currently selling for $129 for the launch at the Tokyoflash website, but will revert back to $149 in 2 days.

You – or at least your waist – will certainly be the center of attention with this humorous belt from German brand Bless. The belt is actually made of two strips of leather, which serves as the straps for the watch. Pair it with the calculator belt buckle for added geekiness.

This ridiculous product comes with a ridiculous price – Project No.8 is selling it for $340 (USD) apiece. If you have a spare belt and an old watch You’d be better off making your own watch belt.

While I initially thought that this watch was basically a touch-enabled timepiece, it’s actually something different. Samuel Jerichow completely minimizes the essence of a watch down to three dots. Thanks to advances in tactile displays, this watch could be feasible.

The Dot Watch is made out of a single, flexible strap covered in stretchable PVC. The main display uses three dots that press up against a flexible sheet to tell the time. The center dot is the middle of the watch. The dot closest to this one indicates the hours while the exterior one shows the minutes. As is the case with faceless analog watches, you’ll have to guesstimate the time, which is good in my book.

To be honest, using a sort of braille numeric dot display might be more useful.

This unique watch from Tokyoflash tells time with words instead of numbers or hands. The always-on LCD watch was originally submitted by a 15-year old Canadian and Tokyoflash made it into reality. Tynan Mayhew submitted this design last year and it’s now available for all, through Tokyoflash’s online store.

Like some of the more recent Tokyoflash designs, this watch uses an LCD so that the display is always on, instead of fading from view and necessitating the push of a button.

The display looks cool, but I would have preferred for only the words to be shown and the other become dark instead of the current time blinking and all of the other words continuing to display.

It’s available in a few different color combinations, from black with blue LCD to purple or green LCD with a white strap. You can buy it for an introductory price of $119 (USD) over at Tokyoflash. The price goes up by $20 in 2 days.

I think watches are the most popular accessory there is. First of all, they’re functional. They tell you the time primarily, while some models even display the date, the temperature, what day of the week it is, and so on and so forth. Second, they’re often stylish and come in quirky, novel, classic, geeky, or girly designs.

The watches I’ve seen thus far have all had one thing in common: they all came with a face. Which makes the Faceless Watch well, the first-ever faceless watch I’ve ever seen. I’m guessing (quite boldly) that this is also probably your first time seeing a faceless watch too. And while what makes this watch so unique also makes its functions more limited in nature, it’s still something that die-hard watch collectors and lovers of quirky timepieces will still probably love.

So how does the Faceless Watch tell you what time it is? With the push of a button, four disguised LEDs that have been built into the band light up and show you what hour and minute of the day it currently is. One more press of the same button and the current month and day is displayed <del>on the face</del> on the strap.

The stainless steel links of the watch are electroplated to give off a glossy black finish. For those interested, the Faceless Watch is available from Hammacher Schlemmer for $129.95.

There’s something to be said about simple and good-looking watches: they make telling time a lot easier than those strange LED watches from Japan. Thankfully, the Cyclops from Mr Jones Watches is very easy to read, and it looks quite nice as well.

Instead of hands, this watch has a single hour marker that goes around the dotted dial. Each hour has a different shaded circle. That’s pretty simple and dead easy to read. I’ve used a watch with no numbers for a while and you can quickly become adept at telling the exact time.

It comes in a black with grayscale dots or in silver with rainbow dots. The Cyclops watch sells for $185 (USD) via the Mr Jones Watches website.

I can see how this concept watch submitted by a Japanese designer might be considered crass by some, especially in light of the situation in Fukushima. Honestly, when I saw it the first thing that came to my mind was Fallout and the game’s Pip-Boy wrist computer. The watch doesn’t really measure radiation levels though, the displays are just styled that way.

In keeping with Tokyoflash strict standards of not being practical as a timepiece, the minutes and hours are divided between three displays:

Here’s an animated video of the watch:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Judging from the comments on Tokyoflash’s website, this would sell well if it was turned into an actual product, although honestly it’s a tad too childish for me. At least it’s not that hard to read compared to the other watches that Tokyoflash makes.

I’ve never thought as Braun as a watch company (mostly an appliance company), but apparently that’s not the case. They’re working on a new digital watch that comes with an analog twist. No, there won’t be a traditional watch face, but there will be an analog dial, a sort of analog scroll wheel, which is kind of cool.

This scroll wheel is an interesting addition to an otherwise digital watch. The concept was shown off at this year’s Baselworld and was designed by Pierre Ventura, who previously had his own high-end digital watch line. While digital watches are nothing new, the addition of an analog scroll wheel is definitely cool – although I’m not quite sure what the function of the wheel will be, I’m guessing it’ll be used for setting the time or switching display modes.

There is no release date yet for this watch, but it could be quite pricey. Wrist Fashion reports that it could sell for about $600 (USD).

WeWood is based in LA, but hails from Florence, Italy. They’ve designed two collections of watches that are made out of natural woods. The wood used in the creation of these timepieces is free of artificial or toxic materials.

They’ve used red wing celtis, ebony, maple, and guaiaco, and watch movements are made by Miyota. The wood come from scrap flooring that’s left over, so it doesn’t get more sustainable than this. Plus, for every watch that is purchased, WeWood plants a new tree in collaboration with American Forests.

E-ink has been around for a while, but there aren’t that many watches which use it as a way of displaying the time. Jonathan Frey seeks to change this with his E-ink watch that he calls the Horodron.

This watch concept would use E-ink in both its form and function. The E-ink allowed the Frey to incorporate some radical lines into the case and face design. The overall watch is made out of glossy black metal with some smaller chrome parts as well.

The display can be changed with two buttons which are along the left side of the watch. The top bands of E-ink would display day and date information, while the time would be displayed on an inverted display concealed in the black at the bottom of the case.

All in all, I wouldn’t mind having one of these on my wrist if it ever gets made.

Keeping up with a running schedule can be taxing. If you don’t have a calendar you mark off to keep up with your running plan, it’s easy for a week or two to pass with you forgetting about that New Year’s resolution you started. What if you keep consistent with your runs, but forget where you started a lap, and want to track how it went?

The new Nike+ SportWatch GPS is new and improved in a whole new way. By pairing up with TomToms GPS services, you can rely on your watch for more than just checking the time. The GPS will function with other Nike shoe sensors to improve the data tracking during your run. The face of the watch is touch screen; with the first touch you can activate the backlight, then mark laps during your run. The backlight LED is adjustable so you aren’t sucking up crazy amount of energy by trying to look at it multiple times in the midst of a run.

A USB port has been molded into the watchstrap, and will not only upload your run data, but charge your battery as well. Your watch will also give you an automatic reminder when you have not logged in five days prior. To top it all off, you can go to Nikeplus.com to see your running data, which will include the GPS information, let you set goals, challenge friends and more. If this doesn’t help kick start a good running schedule, I don’t know what will.

As you might have guessed, this new Tokyoflash watch isn’t easy to read (what else is new?) but it does looks pretty spiffy. The white version definitely makes me think of TRON: Legacy. There’s also some good news! It’s pretty affordable, compared to some of the other watches that they’ve created.

It’s called the Kisai Light Speed and it features lunar orange and blue LEDs and is available in either black or white. Like most LED watches, you need to push a button to see the time. It flashes for a few seconds, then it switches off. Like all new Tokyoflash watches, you can charge the battery via USB. It needs to be charged up every month or so for 3.5 hours, and each battery should last 300 charges. That’s 25 years, if I’m doing my math right!

The video below explains how to read time on this thing.

The new Kisai Light Speed is available over at Tokyoflash for $82 (USD).

The Boy Scouts had it right with their motto about always being prepared. However, you don’t always want people to know that you’re prepared for certain situations.

Unless you’re someone that drinks a lot and doesn’t care who knows it, you might not want to carry a bottle opener on your keychain. After all, nothing says “I love booze” like a bottle opener keychain with some witty saying about only drinking in days that end in “y”. So how do you stay prepared for a drinking situation while still staying classy? Apparently with a $150 Bottoms Up watch.Happy Hour Timepieces has announced a new watch that not only looks stylish, but has a bottle opener buckle built into the strap. It’s so subtle that almost no one would ever know that it wasn’t your average ordinary (non-bottle-opening) watch. It sports other features like a brushed stainless steel design, a calf leather strap and being water resistant to 5 ATM.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can pre-order the watch now for $100, or wait until after it goes on sale later in the month and pay an extra $50. The only thing you have to ask yourself now is which is worse, carrying a $5 bottle opener on a keychain, or a $150 bottle opener that tells time to mask its real use.

I just spotted that Dezeen has just opened an online watch store, and I hope to see some really funky designs available there. Maybe someday they’ll end up designing their own watches, kind of like Tokyoflash.

Dezeen’s watch store will specialize in watches by named designers and boutique brands. They expect their collection to grow over the coming months, but have about 13 watches available right now.

David Ericsson’s Void V01 watch is one of my faves, and the prices are pretty good considering the overall look of the watches. Although they aren’t as funky as the Japanese designs from Tokyoflash, they still look good to me. What do you think?

Although I love Japanese watches, the one thing that I dislike about a lot of them is to take a few moments to figure out what the heck is exactly going on. The Kisai Traffic watch shows what looks like some random traffic, which is supposed to help you tell the time.

The blue lines indicate hours, orange is five-minute blocks, and green traffic is single minutes. It’s interesting, but kind of nutty at the same time. I prefer to glance at a watch and know exactly what time it is.

The battery in the Kisai Traffic is recharged via a USB port. One charge takes up 3.5 hours and each charge will last a month. After about 300 charges, you’ll have to replace the battery. I like the USB charging idea a lot, as I’m always annoyed when it comes time to change the battery on my watches. In fact, I currently don’t wear a watch because of this whole issue. That and the fact that my Seiko Final Fantasy watch is in storage in Canada.

Tokyoflash’s latest concept watch looks cool enough to be used by our robot overlords! Assuming robots wore watches, that is. The Supersonic has bold modern looks and a sleek smoked black hexagonal face.

As with most Tokyoflash watches, half the fun is trying to figure out what the time is when you look at it. There are green and blue lines that represent the time, making no sense at all when you first glance at it. Perhaps this diagram will help clarify what’s going on:

Since this is a concept design, you’ve got vote for it here in order to get it made. What do you guys think?
