Hasbro will soon launch an augmented reality laser tag club exclusive to iPhone and iPod owners. Sorry Android users, you’ll have to find another way to frag them. Launching this August, the Nerf Lazer Tag System will make use of two blasters with a slot to mount an iPhone or iPod Touch to display “gear and remaining power” as well as the virtual laser projectiles. No word if the app will emit sound effects or if you’ll have to shout “pew pew pew” while you’re playing.

As you might have guessed, the blasters will need two things to work. Actually make that seven: six AA batteries and a free complementary app (shown below). According to Hasbro’s announcement, the Lazer Tag system will be able to detect shots fired from up to 250ft away and will feature unlockable equipment and leaderboards.

The app will also have a single player mode where the user hunts and fires at virtual targets while still earning points and unlocking goodies, none of which will make up for how pathetic you’ll look when you’re playing the game on your own.

As I mentioned above, the Lazer Tag system will launch on August 1 and will be available for order from Hasbro’s online shop. The blasters will sell for $40 (USD) each, but you can also get a 2-pack for $70. Hopefully you won’t have to incur the costs of broken iPhones and friendships as well.

Airsoft guns are a lot of fun, but they may not be in everyone’s budget. If you can’t afford one or just don’t want to part with the money, you can make one for about $15 total. It just takes 4 easy to find and cheap parts (assuming you have an air compressor.)

As great as the cheap factor is here, the best part about it is that it will fire hundreds of Airsoft BBs before you even need to reload. Say hello to my (cheap) little friend! You’ll need a plastic soda bottle, a quick release air compressor adapter, an air compressor blowgun, and a 7mm by 6-inch brake line. And of course an air supply. Not the soft rock band.

You could also use a portable air supply so you are untethered and free to hunt your prey. It seems simple enough to build, so it won’t take you long until you are unleashing hellfire on various objects and your enemies. I wouldn’t recommend shooting it at others, though, as Airsoft pellet hits can be pretty painful.

I would have to think that being an engineer on a prototype weapons program would be all kinds of bad-ass. I would like to be a member the team behind the latest new weapon that the U.S. Navy is about to begin testing. It’s a freakin’ railgun! The Navy has been testing railguns in the past, but this particular prototype is the first industry-built model.

This weapon, made by BAE Systems, is targeting a range of 50 to 100 nautical miles to start with and the Navy plans to increase the range 220 nautical miles. The railgun uses 32-megajoules of electromagnetic energy to fling a projectile down a pair of rails at anywhere from 4500 to 5600 mph. That is seriously hellafast.

In fact, it is so fast that explosives aren’t needed to destroy a target. No gunpowder, or high explosives, just pure raw speed and momentum will obliterate whatever that projectile hits. The Navy said to be in testing the new prototype this month while it waits for a second prototype to be delivered that is constructed by a different contractor, General Atomics. The day I can deer hunt with a railgun, will be the day I kill my first Bambi.

The last time we talked about a replica gun from Portal, the thing was made by the bad-ass video game weapon replica maker Harrison Krix from Volpin Props. I don’t even want to think about how expensive that handmade piece of awesome would cost. Another full-size 1:1 scale replica of that portal opening weapon has turned up for pre-order in Japan, and the thing is actually affordable.

This life-size replica of the official Aperture Science Handheld Portal gun comes from Japanese replica manufacturer Neca. The official price in Japan is ¥16,000 and you can pre-order it right now for shipment this April. If you convert the price to US dollars, your very own replica of the Portal gun would cost you just a bit more than $200 – plus shipping and any extra costs for importing it.

Being a replica, it won’t open a portal for you to hop through, but it will change colors between blue or orange depending on the portal you want to pretend to open.

I don’t know if they will ship one of these to the US, so you might want to start being extra nice to any friends you have that might live in Japan, or get in touch with White Rabbit Express to see if they can order one for you. I want one of these really bad, any of you Japanese folks want to volunteer to ship me one?

The guys over at Guns & Gardens have come up with a magical weapon that is full of rainbows and colorful stickers (but no lollipops.) The “OMG-AR15 Unicorn Zombie Gun” is perfectly named. Just look at it.

But this isn’t just some toy gun or some mod that just makes it look neat. This is deadly serious. Under all those stickers is a CA-legal Smith & Wesson M&P15, chambered in .223/5.56 tri-color dot scope, with a 6-position stock and an attached 18v rechargeable chain saw with a fast-swap bayonet mount. Put your jaw back up and wipe your chin.

Yes, this is instant death to any Zombie dumb enough to cross your path. Instant, colorful death. Although you won’t look manly wielding this thing. Now I know what kind of heat to pack for my next My Little Pony hunt.

When the police encounter a locked door and can’t kick it open, they just shoot the doorknob and push their way inside. At least that’s what happens in the movies, anyway. For us ordinary, non-law-enforcement citizens, getting a locked door open is pretty boring because we just use a key (or risk getting arrested.)

That said, these Bang Bang Doorknobs by Nikita Kovalev are really something else. Basically, these doorknobs are based on the look of 9mm Makarov pistols. To open the door, just pull the trigger and open.

I don’t know you’re supposed to lock your doors with these doorknobs though, as I don’t see any slots for keys or anything else. Maybe it has something to do with cocking the gun, or maybe these are strictly for interior doors which don’t lock.

Whenever you run out of bullets or shells to take care of those pesky zombies – which we all know are coming one way or the other at some point in time – you need a fall-back weapon. That’s why the DoubleStar Zombie-X AK-47 was specifically designed to accept a battery-charged chainsaw, instead of a laser range-finder.

The most frightening thing though is that this is a real attachment for real AK-47s. So if the zombie apocalypse really does happen, then you’d best order yours, just in case. You can match that chainsaw with the EOTech Zombie Stopper XPS2-Z Holographic Sight, which puts a biohazard symbol on your target instead of a red dot.

DoubleStar’s last zombie-themed DSC Zombie Slayer rifle sold for $1,249.99(USD), and this is a lot fancier, so it will be pricier when it’s released.

The latest slingshot from Joerg Sprave has turned up and while it’s lacking the zombie (and coconut) crushing power of the last one we talked about with a hammer on the end, the new one is pretty hot. By hot, I really mean hot too. Sprave fitted his new Entropy Slayer 2000 slingshot with its own heater.

As he shows in his video, as soon as you stretch the rubber band on a slingshot, the band heats up, which gives the slingshot more firing power. Right away the band cools and as the heat leaves, the power declines too. The problem is if you want to have your slingshot loaded and ready to fire you end up losing power. The answer to the problem of losing that power is to apply heat.

Sprave took a heating element and encapsulated it and the rubber bands in an enclosure that traps the heat and keeps the bands nice and warm for firing. This way when he stretches the bands, he can heat them up for maximum power. The heater is powered by a rechargeable battery and appears to heat quickly. He’s also included an interior/exterior thermometer for optimizing the temperature.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if Joerg heated up the rubber bands on some of his more destructive creations like the circular saw slingshot or the slingshot cannon.

It comes from papercraft artist Leo Firebrand and is a pretty damned accurate reproduction of the game’s small, but deadly Snub Pistol – especially given the fact that it’s made out of paper. It even has integrated LEDs which cast an appropriate blue glow.

Leo waited a while since his last project before making this one because he wanted to perfect his skills and do the gun justice. This project required many more layers than any build he has done previously, so it took a lot of planning as well. The finished product certainly shows that attention to detail and looks amazing. It sure looks like mission accomplished to me.

What you see in the video below is just a prototype, and he says that the forward locking system is not as strong as it could be.

You know those annoying ads that you see sometimes when you browse a site or read some news online? The ones at the side that are offering you a free X-ray app and then show a picture of a woman’s clothed behind?

Well, the New York Police Department’s plan for mobile weapon scanners sort of remind me of that, but they are, of course, completely different.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-80683" src="http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/NYPD-Mobile-Weapon-Scanner.jpg" alt="NYPD Mobile Weapon Scanner" v=ysPqGlUR4vM" width="600" height="413" title="NYPD Mobile Weapon Scanner photo" />

The NYPD is developing a small, portable version of the full body scanners – similar to those that you have to go through in the airport, but using infrared sensors. These devices would enable officers to determine if someone is carrying or concealing a weapon under his or her clothes, without having to leave the police car or van. The device would be able to differentiate between the suspect’s body and any metal objects they are carrying.

The initiative was announced this week by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. So far, Kelly reports they have already been able to produce a prototype scanner in conjunction with the Department of Defense, although it’s still pretty limited: it only has a range of three to four feet. Kelly remains confident though, that they can push this up to eighty feet with continued work on the project.

Our pal Joerg Sprave is one spooky dude with all sorts of slingshots around that will fend off a zombie invasion without bullets. Joerg is back this time out with a new slingshot that he designed specifically for the zombie apocalypse. This one shoots regular metal balls, rather than saw blades like some of the other devices he had made.

One end of the new Zombiehammer slingshot is your typical slingshot that is powerful and shoots metal ball bearings. The other end of the slingshot is where the zombie smashing magic happens. Joerg built a giant spike into one side and a massive ball on the other. So it’s both a projectile and a melee weapon in one.

The spike even has an ejector so if you spike a zombie and the spike sticks, you can pull the elector lever and pop the undead skull off your spike. Take Joerg’s words to heart, he would never use this thing on a human, only a Zombie.

If you’re looking for another weapon to add to your arsenal to protect yourself from the inevitable zombie apocalypse, you might want to consider carrying an umbrella with you. No you’re not going to use it to keep dry while the zombies get wet in the rain, you’re going to use it and stab them in the eyes and then disembowel them. That is, at least that’s if you buy this umbrella.

This otherwise ordinary umbrella conceals a nasty surprise. Hiding in the middle of this thing is a 15″ long stainless steel sword, ready to dispatch zombies or any other would-be attackers. While it still works as a regular umbrella, you just grab the knuckle grip, give it a yank, and you’re ready for some serious zombie-killing action. Or swashbuckling, if you’re into that sort of thing.

In all seriousness, there’s probably not a lot of real-world uses for this thing, but it is an impressive weapon nonetheless. It’s can’t even be shipped to California, Massachusetts or New York, if that gives you any sense how dangerous it really is. On the other hand, if you do have a zombie invasion in those states, you’re SOL. If you’re prepared to treat this weapon with the respect it deserves, you can get the umbrella sword over at BUDK for $29.99 (USD).

Looking for a way to annoy your roommates without actually harming them? These unique toy weapons fire tiny paper pellets instead of bullets, water or paintballs.

The Max Force Maximizer 60 can fire up to 8 bits of harmless paper ammo between reloads, and can shoot them up to 60 feet away. The moistened paper pellet ammo is designed to break up on impact, so you can see where you hit, but they don’t cause any real damage. Stepping up the rung is the Shadowhawk 100, which looks like a sniper rifle. It’s even got a folding stand and a scope for getting the most accurate shot off. Plus, the Shadowhawk can fire its paper payload at your victims up to 100 feet away.

And if you’d rather go with something a little less intense, you could always go for the Max Force Blow Gun 35, which uses your breath to fire, instead of a spring-loaded firing mechanism. The Blow Gun can only fire 35 feet, but you can probably use it much more stealthily than the Maximizer. I like to think of it like the world’s fanciest spitball cannon. Just don’t suck instead of blow, or else you might end up with a stomach full of paper.

The Maximizer 60 gun will set you back £19.99 (~$32 USD), the Shadowhawk 100 sells for £39.99 (~$64 USD), and the Blow Gun 35 goes for £12.99 (~$21 USD) over at Firebox. Additional ammo pellets sell in packs of 500 for £4.99 (~$8 USD).

Manly men everywhere sometimes have the urge to go out in the woods and shoot something, then find a lake and catch some fish. Take that nature. Some of your beautiful wonders are now dead. Muscles are flexed, heads are mounted and fish are now served with just a hint of mercury. It’s the American way. But what if you could shoot and fish using the same weapon?

The Pack Rifle from Mountain View Machine & Welding lets you do just that. This aluminum rifle converts to a fishing rod when you re-assemble it. It has a detachable reel for the pistol grip, which can be extended. Conversion takes less than a minute. The gun’s bullets are .22 caliber so I guess this is good for hunting small to medium game only.

It’s a single shot, bolt action rifle for those who can’t decide whether they want fish or deer for dinner. Your indecisiveness is expensive though as this weapon will cost you $425(USD).

In his short titled Retro Warfare, Andrew McMurry finds himself backed into a corner by a variety of pixelated foes, and has to resort to the weapon he has on hand to blast them back to where they came from.

Wasn’t that fun? Now I wish I could go back and play Space Invaders and Pac-Man with a loaded gun and real bullets. It looks like fun. In case you’re wondering, Andrew created the clip with the help of After Effects, Cinema 4D, and a pocketful of quarters.

If you are shopping for a new weapon that will behead undead Zombies and immortals alike, there can be only one DIY project for you and this is it. The aptly named Louisville Decapitron will make short work of necks so that heads roll cleanly off of gently falling bodies.

It’s a baseball bat and battle axe in one. It’s that simple. A 20-inch blade mounted to a Louisville Slugger. Great idea. I’d love to see a new sport where Zombies are let onto a Baseball field and then players can just go wild on them. First you hack the heads off with the axe end while running around in the outfield, then the game goes back to the in-field where you try to play ball using the Zombie heads. Gruesome stuff, but the Pay-Per-View revenue would make me a millionaire.

The idea (as the creator of this weapon sees it) is that “the zombies can be dealt with at close range while the living, which is after the food supply, can be beat away with the other end without causing death.” I like my idea better.

Some guy went and built himself a Halo Sniper Rifle out of LEGO pieces and it looks absolutely amazing. It also looks super heavy. This is a 1:1 ratio replica, so it is exact as far as size goes.

For those who may not know, Nick Jensen’s LEGO sniper rifle is based on the Halo: Reach version of the weapon. It’s 63 inches long, weighs over ten pounds and even has a removable magazine. There’s also a moving safety and sliding bolt. Good news for anyone on the other end of it: It does not fire anything at all.

It took the creator nearly four months to complete. That’s no doubt why it looks so bad-ass and detailed. It apparently broke several times during the process, and you can see how the muzzle of the rifle does sort of bend a little under its own weight. Still, this Nick is obviously a serious Halo and LEGO builder and he did a great job.

We don’t get a real winter here in Texas, it rarely snows. If it does snow, it only lasts a few days. In colder climates, like Technabob HQ in Chicago, you guys can spend the winter having snowball fights and digging your car out. If you want an edge in those Winter snowball fights, this is the weapon for you.

It’s called the Crossbow Snow Launcher, and it can shoot a snowball up to 60 feet away. It comes with a snowball press to make up to three snow spheres just the right size for firing. It appears to use some sort of rubber or elastic straps to hurl the snowball towards your victim.

The photo here is actually only a rendering. I would love to see a video of this in action. The Crossbow Snow Launcher is offered by The Sharper Image and sells for $39.99 (USD).

The folks over at Techno-Holics have come up with these homemade Tazer Gloves, which admittedly don’t look like much, but they pack a punch. Criminals would be sadly mistaken to think that you were just packing Altoids, but would soon find out that these Altoids tins house a neat DIY tazer.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If you want to try your hand at this project yourself, you will need basic electronics know-how, along with some discarded disposable cameras, AA batteries, 2 Altoids tins, some dollar store dog collars, rubberized fishing gloves, 2 single pole single throw momentary switches, solder and wire. Now check out that video. There is nothing quite so beautiful as being able to touch your fingers together and create huge sparks.
