I think his most impressive piece is Cap’s shield, although the bow and arrow set is quite the feat too. It’s disappointing that Robichaud wasn’t able to make a LEGO Iron Man suit, but it’s not like that’s easy to make.

Check out this amazingly awesome custom Mechagodzilla lamp complete with assault rifles. He reminds you to turn your light off when you leave the room. Or else.

This badass lamp gives Mechagodzilla wings, twin G36C rifles and a whole lot of attitude. The wings come from an old toy that Obvious Winner found at a local comic book shop for a $1. They were promptly snapped off and surgically attached to Mechagodzilla using a drill and epoxy.

After that it was time to arm this beast with some weaponry. The choice? 1:6 scale G36 assault rifles that are nicely detailed. You can even fold the stock and remove the magazine and the bullets inside. Those are some nice guns. I wish I had a lamp this cool myself. Great job. I hope we see a Mothra lamp next.

We may someday have a weapon that will safely and effectively combat noise. Called the SpeechJammer, the device uses a technique called Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) – it replays back the target’s speech with a slight delay. This messes with our brain and makes it difficult for us to continue speaking. You could of course achieve the same silence by shooting someone with a real gun, but that’s way too drastic for librarians.

The SpeechJammer was invented by Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada. As you can see in the picture above, it has a directional microphone to capture the target’s speech, and a directional speaker to play the captured sound back. The distance sensor uses the laser pointer to calculate the distance of the target. The on-board computer needs the distance to ensure that the delayed playback is consistent. Here’s Mashable with more on the device:

And here’s a video from a Spanish talk show that shows DAF in action. The musician wears a pair of headphones and his voice is played back to him. He manages to sing, but the technique did have an effect on him:

The funny thing is, DAF doesn’t work if you stutter. In fact, it has the opposite effect, making stutterers speak better. That’s why there are programs – and even an iOS app – that cause DAF. I guess we’ll just have to deal with noisy stutterers with a good ol’ punch to the face.

Engineers from weapons and defense research outfit Sandia National Laboratories are working on a bullet that can steer itself after it is fired, homing in on laser-designated targets with the help of embedded electronics. The other geniuses working on invisibility need to go on overdrive.

The 4 inch-long bullet was invented by Red Jones and Brian Kast, who aside from being engineers are also hunters. So if you hate this tech, blame the game that they couldn’t hit. Although to say that this is overcompensating would be an understatement: the high-tech ammo has an optical sensor, an 8-bit CPU that handles “guidance and control electronics” and electromagnetic actuators that control its fins.

The bullet is meant to be used with smooth-bore firearms, i.e. ones that don’t have grooves inside their barrels. The grooves give spin to normal bullets to help them fly straight, but since this bullet literally has a mind of its own it doesn’t need the spin. The screenshot above shows the path left by a prototype fitted with an LED, proving that its electronics and battery are not destroyed when the bullet is fired. That is one weird trajectory.

Sandia’s press release also said that the bullet’s flight gets steadier with distance, so it’s better suited for long-range targets. The current prototype isn’t up to the U.S. military’s standards in terms of velocity, but its inventors are confident that they can make it go faster by using customized gunpowder. Or they could invent bullet time. Check the link below for more details.

On occasion, my daughter or son will call me from one of their bedrooms to come help with something. I know things are not right when the first thing I hear is “Pillow Fight!” and then start getting hit. The bad part is that when my daughter runs out of pillows to throw, she has been known to resort to chucking Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels at me.

What we need for those pillow fights is these plush weapons by Bryan Ku to make things more realistic. They’re made out of everyday fabric and stuffing with different weapons like a grenade, ninja star, axe, cutlass, and even a lightsaber silkscreened onto them.

I am really digging the lightsaber and the nunchucks. Though I wonder if that long and thin lightsaber has enough rigidity to be effective in a pillow fight. I’d stick with the nunchucks and go all Bruce Lee on my opponents.

Patrick says that all of his wristbow’s parts are homemade. It even has a laser sight, which is powered by two AA-batteries which are tucked on his palm along with the laser sight’s toggle. The wristbow’s bolts are made of carbon fiber tubing with brass and steel tips, although crossbow connoisseurs might balk at his bolts because they have fletching – the feathery things near the back of the arrow – which bolts are not supposed to have. Watch the not-bolts and the wristbow destroy things in the video below:

That’s an ultra-silent crossbow. It didn’t make a sound even when it hit the can! Oh. Yeah, yeah I knew that there really was no audio the first time around. Heheh. Heh. Patrick says he’ll make an instructable soon so that Deus Ex fans can augment their cosplay with their own wrist-mounted crossbow. Who knows, maybe Patrick will even accept custom orders like he does with his other creations.

Are you preparing a Minecraft related costume for Halloween? You have a variety of options when it comes to props. You can get the official foam pickaxe from Mojang and ThinkGeek, or you can print one of your in-game tools or creations. Here’s a third option that’s in between the other two, courtesy of Etsy seller CarryTheWhat: 3D printed replicas of the game’s pickaxe and sword.

The pickaxe is about 4″ long, while the sword is about 5.3″ long. Both are made of ABS plastic and have been hand-painted. You can customize the color of your order, so you don’t have to settle for a wood pickaxe. You can even have them sent unpainted if you want.

Fans of the Dead Space series will be familiar with the Plasma Cutter, since it’s the default tool-turned-weapon that the hero Isaac Clarke has in both games. Now you can own life sized replicas of the Plasma Cutters in Dead Space and Dead Space 2, which will surely come in handy if you encounter life sized replicas of Necromorphs.

Pictured above is the 211-V Timson Tools Plasma Cutter from the first game, while the one below is the custom Plasma Cutter that Isaac Clarke himself built and is the one he uses in the sequel. Both weapons measure 17″ x 11″ x 3″ and come in a display case. Both also have built-in 3.7-volt rechargeable batteries that power the “3 blast spot”, the sight lines that the in-game weapons have. In addition, the Dead Space 2 Plasma Cutter also has a flashlight.

One feature that the Dead Space 2 Plasma Cutter has that the earlier version doesn’t is that its front half can be rotated 90 degrees, mimicking the horizontal mode available in the video game.

You can pre-order both replicas at discounted prices from Epic Weapons. The Dead Space Plasma Cutter sells for $150 (USD) while the Dead Space 2 Plasma Cutter sells for $160. If you’re an Entertainment Earth loyalist, you can also get both replicas from said retailer – check ‘em out here and here – but they’re a lot more expensive there, selling for $220 and $240 respectively.

When it comes to high-tech weaponry, slingshots aren’t exactly very high on the list. When it comes down to it, most slingshots are made from a frame, a couple pieces of rubber and a small bit of leather. After all, what more could you want from this age-old weapon? Why not a laser?

That’s right, maker Kipkay decided to fashion his own laser-guided slingshot. What’s more, he gave a nice list of instructions on how to make one yourself. The parts list isn’t terribly expensive, and the most complicated tool you’ll have to use is a drill. I’m not exactly sure what practical uses this weapon has, but hey, it’s got a laser on it.

This little device is actually quite dangerous in the wrong hands. It’s powerful enough to induce headaches, dizziness, irritation and even vomiting to everyone in its vicinity. That being said, it’s an extremely nerdy way to get back at bullies.

The Sonic Nausea is based on the speaker-sized Super Sonic Nausea (the hierarchy is evident), which can cause discomfort to large crowds. Both emit high frequency sounds to get things done, which means it’ll be hard for your targets to realize they’re actually being attacked (as if anyone would be paranoid enough to suspect that they’re being attacked by a high-frequency device every time they feel dizzy).

You can order the Sonic Nausea from Shomer-Tec for $29 (USD). I don’t know how fast this works or how large it’s area of effect is, but it goes without saying that this thing doesn’t pick targets. Let’s hope it comes with an adequate manual.

Actually, Chein’s weapon really can cause harm , in this case temporary blindness. Thank god he’s on our side! His invention uses a DC step-up charging module from an analog camera, which steps up the 3V power source – the batteries you see above – to 330V, which is then used to fire up a Xenon lamp, creating a blinding flash of light.

The Office of Naval Research – not to be confused with the Office of Navel Research, a pet project of the previous president – recently awarded defense contractor Raytheon a year-long contract to develop laz0rb33mz. No seriously, the US Navy wants to have a 100-kilowatt Free Electron Laser as a weapon that will be installed on naval warships. Marvel Comics Popular Mechanics explains: “A FEL uses superconducting electron accelerators to produce high-power laser beams that could target cruise missiles, airplanes or boats.” Uhuh. I see. That’s… I see.

Yeah I give up. I don’t even know what’s on the picture. I just find it incredible that the stuff I used to place under “fiction/nightmares” is coming true right before my eyes. Laser weapons? Are you freaking kidding me? The article added that the Raytheon contract was just the first step in a $150 million, three-phase Dr. Evil ONR program.

100-kilowatt laser weapons. Wow. And yet a lot of the problems that were already around when I was a kid are still here today. Like world hunger. Or civilians not having super powers or laser weapons. Seriously. Someone please do something about that.

I think the best advantage in sending robots instead of humans to armed conflicts is simply the fact that robots are not human. Robots don’t have feelings or families, so no one gets hurt if a robot goes down, not even its fellow robots. Robots are not alive, which means they can’t die.

Brainz showcased some of America’s present and future killing machines, developed in the superpower’s quest to lessen bloodshed. On their side at least. I must say, these warbots look like a bunch of proto-Decepticons.

The white one on the left is Boeing’s X-45 UCAV (Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle). Here’s how Brainz describes them: “Like horrors from a science fiction film, these things are meant to travel in packs, autonomously, and engage targets with lethal speed, maneuverability, and armament.” Sounds like Protoss Interceptors to me.*pees a little*

Uhm anyway the “dwarf-sized autonomous helicopter” on the right is the MQ-8 Fire Scout. Although he looks friendly with his smile and starry eyes, the MQ-8 is a killing machine. It can be fitted with Hellfire missiles and other “laser-guided armaments”; testing is also being done with alternative versions that are equipped with .338 caliber rifles. For pew pew pewing humans.

The one on the left looks like a movie prop, but its actually the US Marine Corps’ Gladiator. Smaller than a Mini, the Gladiator can be fitted to carry supplies for fleshbags, or it can be equipped with “enough mortar tubes to level a building a quarter-mile away.” Wow.

The one on the right isn’t actually autonomous, but I’m mentioning it because it comes closest to being the future infantry. Called TALON, it’s remote-controllable for up to 1,000 ft away, and although it “only comes up to knee height”, the TALON is a remote-controlled nightmare. It can be fitted with an M16, a .50 caliber rifle or an M249 machine gun. In the future, Counter-Strike players will have to choose between terrorists and TALONS.

So Old Snake was right: War has changed. Read the full article at Brainz and be cautiously impressed. I mean it would be stupid to assume that these things can’t be used, hacked or reverse-engineered for evil purposes. Why can’t we all just get along, you know, buy the world a Coke?

[via Switched]
