While wearable TVs are things that are usually seen in science-fiction, Dave Forbes decided to make his own 60″ TV in the form of an LED video coat. It looks pretty fascinating, though it could make a good portion of the population queasy looking at all of this motion while somebody is wearing it.

The LED TV Coat has only got 160×120 resolution, so it won’t beat your HDTV, however it’s wearable and portable, so that’s definitely cool. Dave can pipe video into it through an iPod or media player, and the whole thing is powered by a 12V battery. It’s made up out of a bunch of flex boards with LEDs on them, connected by ribbon cables, then hot glued to the coat. A digitizing board converts the video signals into RGB serial data streams to generate the LED images.

Dave built this coat to wear to Burning Man, where he’ll probably try to do some mass hallucinations. For now, you can catch The Simpsons being streamed on his LED TV coat.

In Texas, the weather can change at a moment’s notice. We tend to not change plans because of poor weather until the last second because it can be flooding one minute and sunny the next. I have been caught in the rain before unprepared, and if you are a hiker, this new wearable tent has surfaced that might catch your attention.

We don’t have many details on the thing, but really you don’t need any to get the idea what it does. It’s a poncho that you can wear with a hood to keep the rain off. If you need a place, to sit you can stake the thing down and it makes its own little tent. That is the cool part about the thing.

The stupid part comes in the execution. If you are wearing this to keep the rain off you and you decide to turn it into a tent, you will get all wet going outside to stake the thing down. I guess you have to wear another poncho to stay dry while you go out to stake it down. It also lacks a bottom so you get to sit on the wet ground.

I am a huge fan of the tiny wearable camcorders that GoPro offers. I have one of their small GoPro Motorsports Hero HD camcorders that I use for car reviews and the thing is great. It’s tiny, has long battery life, records high-resolution video and has great mounting options.

The downside to that camera and the others on the market is that they are expensive with the high-end offerings at nearly $300. GoPro has unveiled a new cheaper camcorder called the HD Hero 960. The camera maxes out at a resolution of 1280 x 960 and supports 720p HD whereas the other cams from GoPro do 1080 – but it will save you some money.

The 960 can also shoot still photos and has a waterproof case. The camera ships with a head mount that will also work for helmet recording. GoPro also ships it with a curved adhesive surface mount and a flat surface mount as well. One other item of note: the 960 lacks the expansion port the higher-end cameras offer so the LCD back or extra battery pack that are available will not work with it.

The 960 can be purchased right now for $179(USD).

If I were to make my own, I’d rather use a bright red jacket with blue LEDs. That way if something goes wrong with the tech – like if it gets rained on or something – I won’t be stuck wearing a black jacket in the dark.

I think social networking is sometimes like over-sharing. Really, do you really need to share every little insignificant detail of your life with the entire universe? Now here’s something that reveals even more about your inconsequential tweets – clothes that tell the whole world how you feel!

The odd thing is that this bit of wearable technology by Vanessa Sorenson is that it doesn’t actually detect your mood using any kind of fancy emotion-sensing sensors. Nope, it just connects to a computer to look at keywords in your tweets to analyze your mood.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The algorithm scans the “mood” of your tweets. This in turn lets the color of the embedded LEDs change, depending on your feelings. Needless to say that you’d probably have to be in Wi-Fi range for this to work. I don’t know about you guys, but I prefer not letting everyone know how I feel. I just write for blogs.

Ever thought about putting together your own “smart garments?” Well here’s a way to weave technology into your very own clothing without too much effort.

Thanks to fabric technologist Hanna Perner-Wilson (aka Plusea), you can now purchase pre-made components which you can use to make interactive clothing pieces.

Her collection of wearable tech items includes things like fabric pushbuttons, a pressure, stretch and bend sensors and even a special neoprene battery pack you can sew into your clothes.

Most parts sell for about $15 to $20 (USD) over at Plusea’s Etsy shop, and of course you’ll need some electronic circuitry to wire these elements to.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

If you’re into hacking and modding, you could definitely come up with some cool concepts using these. Personally, I’d like to see a complete wireless game controller for my Xbox 360 woven into a jacket. Why? Why the heck not?

The Wearable Robot was developed by the Tsumaki Telerobotics Laboratory at Yamagata University. It can sit on your friend’s shoulder to give you a sort of physical presence during a remote teleconference. It does so by looking where you look, kind of like that awesome Predator laser.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Anything that the robot sees will be transmitted to the wearer thanks to some handy goggles. Seems sort of like Avatar version 0.1.

Remember those gesture control gloves Tom Cruise wore in Minority Report? Well, starting in 2010, you’ll be able to work similar magic with your fingertips thanks to the new Peregrine gesture glove.

The unusual computer controller features over 30 touch points which can be used to interact with your games and other software like you’ve never done before. Each glove can be custom calibrated to your own unique touch and hand size, and each touch point can be mapped to your computer keys using the included configuration software. Since the glove emulates keys on your keyboard, you can play just about any game with it – although it’s probably best for RTS and MMORPG games. But I’d still like to try playing MAME with one.

The military-grade glove attaches to your computer with a breakaway magnetic connector pod that’s designed to breakaway in case you get too raucous when thrashing around. And since it’s a standard HID-compliant USB device you can use it with Windows, Mac OS and Linux computers without a problem. (though the configuration software is only coming for Windows and Macs).

Check out the videos below to see the Peregrine in action:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Peregrine expects to start shipping the glove in early 2010 for $129 (USD) – $20 off of the regular price, and you can pre-order yours here.

iKey’s AK-39 military-grade wearable keyboard is built to operate in “very harsh electromagnetic interference (EMI) environments”, as well as provide an interface that allows for one-armed typing. It also has a backlight that is compatible with night vision technology. The snap-on faceplate was designed to avoid registering accidental keystrokes, and is easy to remove and clean. The AK-39 also has an “an integrated Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) pointing device with left- and right-click functionality”. In other words, a mouse substitute.

Ah what the hell. It’s a wearable keyboard! You know, the one that you pretended to have when you were a kid while pretending to be a spaceman or maybe spy? All it needs is a built-in 2-way radio and it’s that exact same imaginary toy! Except it’s real! Pricing and availability are still unknown, but if the AK-39 is indeed for soldiers, spacemen and spy, then we probably won’t be able to play Laser Tag while dual-wielding wearable keyboards anytime soon.

I can admit it–I’m attracted to the idea of finding lost things in the sand or dirt, but there are two problems with traditional metal detectors: a) you have to carry them around (lame), and b) they’re pretty obviously metal detectors and you might as well throw on some black socks with your sandals. Geek may be in, but for some, there are limits. Today, friends, those limits are gone… or at list slightly more hidden. Check it: metal detecting sandals.

Look how discreet. You can tell people that’s anything, all the while quietly filling up that giant change jar beside the nightstand. You’ll need to fill it up good to cover the cost of these babies: a pair runs $59.95.

What would you say to a video game console that’s not controlled by a joystick, a mouse or even a Wii-mote, but instead by the relaxing touch of massage?

The Massage me jacket lets the person giving the massage get their game on while the person receiving the treatment gets to chill out. More intensive massage results in better game play, motivating the masseur to give a good rub down. According to the designer of the device “Otherwise wasted button-pushing energy is transformed into a massage and the addicted game player becomes an inexhaustible masseur.”

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Numerous pressure sensors are built into the jacket, converting massage into control signals for a video game console.

Since the jacket really just works in place of a traditional gamepad, it works with many off-the-shelf games. I’d imagine that “button-mashers” like fighting games are best, while first-person-shooters probably wouldn’t work all that well. I wonder if Dance Dance Revolution would work best if you walked on the person’s back?

Got 700 Terabytes of storage to spare? That’s about how much memory you’ll need if you want to use this invention to record your entire life.

Professor Yasuyuki Kono and a team of researchers from Japan’s Kwansei Gakuin University have devised a system which can record everything you ever do. Just strap the camera on your head, and the system will record every waking (and sleeping) moment of your life. Think of the device as sort of a portable Truman Show.

Early prototypes of the camera had the individual wear some crazy headgear, but as the project has evolved, they’re now fashioning a waist-mounted camera that’s not quite as intrusive.

It’s not only supposed to record everything, its the Professor’s goal to include a search algorithm that’s capable of quickly locating a moment in time that you’re having difficulty remembering. I’m not sure exactly how it’s supposed to work, but from what I can tell, you’re supposed to record the touch sensation of particular objects as you go through the day, and then you’ll be able to touch a similar object and recall the video that was captured in similar circumstances

The whole thing seems a little outlandish to me, but I suppose it could have some application for individuals with memory problems.
