Only someone who’s a complete stranger to the world of gaming would think that World of Lordcraft is an original IP. So, is the craft of lords better than that of war? In short: No. But it is way funnier. Currently under development by a company called GSprite, this WoL of shame pilfered almost all of the lore and terms of WoW.

Nowhere else does the presence of the phrase “All rights reserved” become funny; and yet there it is at the bottom of WoL’s website. Just about the only original thing about this game is the ugly art and the new words and meme-worthy phrases produced by typos.

As far as I can tell, the game is not an MMO; it outright rips off the Alliance and Horde, and even Arthas’ mug, but I think it plays like an RTS, with Heroes of Might and Magic-style battles. I think. There’s no relevant information regarding the gameplay. What is on the website is the most pathetic game trailer I have ever seen, narrated by someone who sounds like an adolescent Alan Rickman.

In an era in which we are trying to make robots look more human or just make them more useful, there’s nothing like this tower-shaped robot to get to the heart of the matter.

Tsutenkaku is its name, and from the promotional video, it makes me think that the goal is to actually produce a gigantic building Transformer robot. This robot is about 5′6″ high, and no less than 7 different Japanese companies thought that it was a good idea to produce a walking tower robot like this.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Apparently, the robot was created to help make Osaka cooler. For some reason, they thought that a robot, which could strike poses and light up like a Christmas tree, would accomplish this. It’s scheduled to make its debut next week in Tokyo.

Currently in beta, Gaikai will let gamers try out all sorts of games and software – Eve Online, Mario Kart, WoW, Photoshop – with only a browser and Flash as requirements. No need to install anything. Sound familiar? The truth is that Gaikai and OnLive are quite similar: both are cloud-based gaming services – their servers handle everything from hardware to software, theoretically enabling users to play the latest games over a broadband connection without the need to have the latest hardware or even the game itself. But Perry claims that Gaikai has a more palatable marketing strategy.

Co-founder Dave Perry says that Gaikai wants to work closely with game publishers, whereas Onlive’s marketing strategy is to go up against the console makers. OnLive recently revealed their pricing scheme: $15 a month, aside from the cost of purchasing games. Perry thinks that OnLive will kill itself. Gaikai on the other hand, seems to be more of a way for publishers to let customers try their games using as little equipment as possible – an internet connection, a browser and Flash. Watch Dean Takahashi interview Perry as the latter fiddles with Gaikai (very weird name by the way).

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So what is Gaikai’s push? Perry revealed a bit of the company’s plans in an interview with Eurogamer. The plan is for Nintendo, Sony et al to leverage Gaikai’s technology to let users try games for free, again using only a browser and Flash: “Say you’re going to Nintendo.com. We’ll actually look at your geographical location, see we’ve got a server near you, and pop up a button that says ‘play Mario Kart now’. You click the button, up pops Mario Kart and you can play it… Our objective is to make you fall in love with Nintendo and have a great time playing Mario Kart. And this is the big difference. We’re not running the games, it’s the publishers running the games. We supply the service to them to let them do this.” But at the same time, as you can clearly see in this demo, Gaikai is also considering something very similar to what OnLive is offering:

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

So… it seems that Gaikai offers a much simpler interface than OnLive and that the company is offering their tech to game publishers. But the question here is: will there be a dedicated Gaikai service for gamers similar to what was shown above, or will the tech be found embedded in publisher’s websites? Or will it be both? And if there will be a Gaikai service what then makes it different, marketing wise, from OnLive? So many questions.

Maker/Problem-solver Steve Hoefer made an Arduino-based glove that can play Rock Paper Scissors. Why? Why the hell not! You think a nerd would pass up the opportunity to play with a computer? The glove has an accelerometer that detects when the user is shaking his fist to signify the beginning of a round. A flex sensor takes care of determining what move has been pulled off, i.e. whether you played rock, paper or scissors, and a layered edge-lit display shows what move the computer played. LEDs are used to show the score.

So how does the Arduino Mini Pro fare in Rock Paper Scissors? “It wins. A lot. And it adapts.” The glove remembers a user’s playing habits, so if you have a pattern of moves (whether you’re aware that you have a pattern of moves or not), the glove will adjust accordingly.

For example, if most of the time your opening move is Rock, then the glove will start using Paper as its initial move more often. Or if you usually play Paper twice in a row, then the glove will learn to play Scissors after your first Paper. It’s Rock Paper Scissors Championship Edition, and it seems that ironically, you’ll have a higher chance of winning if you don’t have a strategy and are totally random.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Tinkerers and hackers should check out Hoefer’s website for more details, as well as instructions, tips and the source code for the Arduino. Maybe you can build a glove that incorporates Lizard and Spock as well.

I would think that you wouldn’t want to be associated with jail or prison if you were famous, but for a rapper it seems you have to go to jail or prison to be cool.

Akon has unveiled his new fragrance called Konvict for men and women. The men’s variety comes in two silver bottles that look like handcuffs joined by a chain. Each bottle has 1.7 ounces of the scent. The ladies version is in a pair of gold handcuffs. I wonder if it smells like weed and malt liquor.

You can buy either version for $49.95 right now. In related news, the rock band Tool is releasing its own scent based on its popular song “Prison Sex” shipping in a bottle shaped like a giant glass cock. The fragrance will sell under the name Ben Dover for Men.

Hey there. Having a normal weekend so far? Let’s make it freaky then; that’s what I’m paid to do. Below is a shot of watchmaker Louis Moinet’s latest creation. It’s called the Jurassic Tourbillon, a watch whose dial contains “fragments of authentic fossilized dinosaur bones.”

The Jurassic Tourbillion’s case is adorned by 18K white gold, diamonds, and sapphire crystals, but who cares. Hell I wouldn’t mind if the watch can’t tell the time. What’s important is that it has monster bits inside. The watch will be shown off at Baselworld 2010 in Switzerland this month. What can be more awesome than a watch with dinosaur bones? I’ll tell you what: a watch with an actual dinosaur inside. Top that!

Remember the bit of news we shared a while back about Microsoft’s filing a trademark for “Ribbon Hero?” Well now the game/add-on/learning tool is available for download! It’s a manifestation of Mr. Schell’s vision of the future, but at least this time the game is for a product that a customer has a already bought and is primarily a learning tool, and an optional one at that, not a nagging advertisement.

The game is pretty much what you’d expect. It’s an optional download that works in Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Once it’s installed it sits on your ribbon – where else? – and, just like when you’re playing games on the Xbox 360 or PS3, certain actions you take while using any of the aforementioned programs will automatically earn you points. But you can also click the Ribbon Hero button to engage in challenges, i.e. learning activities, complete with hints. You can integrate the add-on with your Facebook account to compete or compare scores with your friends.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

You can download Ribbon Hero for free at the Microsoft Office Labs website. Currently, it’s only available for Windows users (XP and above) with Office 2007 and above. Microsoft should release a similar program to teach users about keeping their computers malware-free.

Rockstar’s hit formula for video games is CMU professor Jesse Schell’s vision of the future: a quantified life, where every activity is a game, with rewards and challenges. Wake up in the morning and as soon as you brush your teeth, and you earn points, courtesy of the toothpaste company! Commute on the way to work and you get points from the government for being environment friendly! Drink a can of Dr. Pepper for 10 points each. drink a can of Dr. Pepper for 5 days straight and you get 500 bonus points!

No doubt, our generation marks the breakout era of video games, transitioning from the nerd’s basement to your uncle’s Facebook account. But will we really like a Grand Theft Auto-esque life? Here’s Schell’s vision of life as a series of mini games, as he stated in DICE 2010:

PC Games – E3 2010 – Guitar Hero 5

You see, the problem with Schell’s ideas is that they come after the fact, after the success of Facebook et al. Schell himself acknowledges that today’s big hits came from nowhere, things that even veterans wouldn’t have bet a cent on. So why is he so certain that this extrapolated future will come true? I have no doubt that Schell is a genius, and that what he said may very well come true. But I’m also sure that I, an avid gamer, would hate the life that he is talking about.

Despite it’s many similarities, life isn’t really a video game, not even a series of games. Unless you kill yourself, you cannot always take a break from life. In life the consequences are, well, real. The future that Schell talks about will drive many people insane with its incessant nagging and challenging, but you can’t just shut it off because it’s everywhere and it’s your actual world. The points from ads and companies will give people false values of their worth, in the same way that Xbox 360 Achievements add that shallow validation to gamers, when in fact a lot of the achievements and trophies are given for moronic tasks, trampling on the fact that gamers can and should be able to judge if they’ve accomplished something difficult without needing a virtual trophy.

At the end of his presentation, Schell exclaims, “…I do know this stuff is coming. It’s gotta come. What’s to stop it from coming?” I have one word for Mr. Schell: customers. Businesses and companies have pitched a lot of ideas time and again that exuded nothing but pure awesome when they thought of it, only to be shot down by the paying public. What Schell’s future will do is drive people away from gaming. Video games are not just about rewards and challenges: they’re about stories and epic moments, orchestrated and accidental. And yes, despite the many addicted gamers, pro gamers, hardcore gamers out there, for me and many other people games do offer a way to relax and take time off from life.

I will be utterly disgusted if Life turns out to be The Game of the Future. Points for brushing my teeth? Screw that. Unless I get a Gold Chocobo that can walk anywhere, then I’m all for Toothbrush Points.

At first glance at this ridiculous looking thing, I thought I was looking at some sort of wooden kids’ toy. But this oddball device is actually a synthesizer.

Created by Alex Abreu & Ithai Benjamin, the Synthinetic is simply described as “The little kinetic noisy synthesizer of your dreams.” Assuming your dreams include strange squeaky, bleepy noises, I suppose.

Sit back, turn up (or down) the volume and enjoy (or not)…

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The Synthinetic was designed to operate solely on the energy generated by the user and the environment around them. Turning the knobs on the sides of the box stores up energy in a capacitor, which then powers the analog audio circuits. And sticking your finger in that furry hole at the top drains the synth of its energy. I think I’ll stick with my Casio.
