At first glance, this looks like any ordinary old wall clock. But take another look, and you’ll see that there’s nothing ordinary about the way that it works.

You see, the hour markers around the perimeter of designer J.P.Meulendijks‘ Chasing Time clock gradually change positions as the minutes pass. It’s designed so every time you look up at the clock, it looks just a little bit different than the last time you looked at it.

At least the clock hands work the way you’d expect, so you can still tell what time it is – even if you are completely hypnotized by the outer moving bits. If you’re looking for something different to hang on your wall you can order the Chasing Time clock from Swedish design shop pid.se for $359 (USD).

Designer Vadim Kibardin has found a way to make the ever-useful clock be more versatile aesthetics-wise with his black & white clock concept. It consists of just four OLED digits – no case or box or other parts that might clash with the style in your house. Kibardin’s awesome idea is made even awesomer by the addition of a light sensor, which enables the digits function in an inverted manner, to display the time in white if the surrounding is dark, and in black if it’s bright.

Each digit is powered by a lithium-ion accumulator. The controls for the clock are touch-sensitive (although I don’t know where exactly they’re located).

Kibardin is currently looking for a manufacturer that will help make his brilliant idea make the leap from dream to $$$$ reality. More details can be found on Kibardin’s site.

The neo-modern design of this BrionVega desktop radio harkens back to a sixties’ Italian design aesthetic. Maybe that’s because it’s actually based on a radio the company actually made back in 1965 in Italy.

BrionVega’s RR227 is a modern-day update of Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper’s classic RR127 radio, which they created over 44 years ago. The updated model comes with AM and FM radio tuners, and the ability to play MP3 or WMA digital audio files. Just drop an SD card into the slot and connect your computer via USB to load it up with your tunes. There’s also an AUX jack for connecting your iPod or other media player too.

The RR227 features a unique design that lets you place it either horizontally or vertically and still make sense out of the tuning dial. The radio comes in white, black or red ABS plastic, making it both lightweight and sturdy. Sound is provided by a 3-watt amp, and there’s a headphone jack for listening to the radio in seclusion. While the radio comes with an AC power pack that probably won’t work in the U.S. without an adapter, you’ll be happy to know it runs on batteries too.

While I first found the RR227 over at French retailer Singulier for €199 (appx. $262 USD), you can also find them over on eBay Italy for around €150 (appx. $196 USD) with a little digging.

I don’t care if this lamp conjures up memories of my colonoscopy. It’s still cool.

The undulating twists and turns of Kundalini’s Abyss table lamp may look a bit like your intestinal tract, but there’s something about the bendy organic form that I find mesmerizing.

The Abyss can be adjusted into a variety of shapes, thanks to its flexible segmented construction. Hiding beneath its opalescent polycarbonate skin are a number of bright white LEDs which provide clean, green illumination.

Can’t get the image of my lower intestine out of your mind? Perhaps you’d prefer to think about the lamp as something a little less slimy – maybe a snake or an earthworm.

You can find the Abyss Lamp from Y Lighting for about $500.

If you’re a Technabob regular, you know I’m a sucker for cool modern watches. I don’t know why – maybe it’s that I got stuck wearing a dorky Casio calculator watch as a kid that makes me want to rebel in my old age.

Created by Italian architect/designer Denis Guidone, these watches work their magic thanks to their minimal modern design. From a stark planet-like orbital design to a set of super-skinny hairline hands radiating from the center of another, all three of his newest designs are really quite stunning.

Adding to the effect is the dramatic contrast between the pure white hands floating effortlessly over a pitch black backdrop. Each watch is then finished off with a simple black leather band.

There’s no word at this point on if or when these watches will be produced for the masses, but I wouldn’t complain if the artist decided to make up a few functional prototypes and send them my way.

Nope, this isn’t some crazy whitewall tire for your car. It’s actually a high-end wireless outdoor speaker which can be rolled around anywhere you want.

Designed by Ron Arad and Frances Pellisari for Austria’s Viteo, the Freewheeler produces high quality stereo sound indoors or out. The speaker measures in at about 22.8″ tall x 9.8″ wide, making it just about the same diameter as the tires on a Mazda MX-5 Miata (and about 2x as thick).

Just roll the Freewheeler around your house, and it’ll play your tunes remotely. Simply plug your audio source into the included transmitter, and a built-in FM receiver and rechargeable battery pack lets you wheel the mobile sound system up to 656 feet (200m) away from the base station.

A pair of coaxial speakers mounted inside the lacquered wood enclosure provide true stereo sound. Frequency response is 52 – 21,000 Hz, with a maximum output SPL of 112 dB. A single charge of the battery should give you about 8 hours of play time.

It all sounds really cool, no? Well here comes the bad part… The Freewheeler must be created solely for the uber wealthy. I’m hoping this price is a typo, but according to retailer MadeInDesign, the speaker sells for over $21,000 (USD), making it just about as expensive as that Miata I mentioned earlier, complete with four tires and a spare.

Looking for something a little different to set on your bedside table? This new alarm clock tears apart the hours, minutes and seconds and places them on individual time-telling blocks.

Seiji’s LED block alarm clock are interconnected using ribbon cables with enough slack in them to let you stack them pretty much any way you like.

You can even arrange the blocks into a vertical configuration, instead of the more typical horizontal orientation.

While they do seem a little derivative of Jonas Damon’s Open Edition LED clock, they’re just different enough to stand on their own. That said, I still prefer the less garish single color segmented LEDs on Damon’s original versus the red, white and blue dot matrix displays on these ones.

For the time being, you’ll have to admire these from afar anyway, as they’re currently only available in Japan.

Here’s a nifty clock that’s a bit more dynamic than what you’d typically see hanging on your wall. Depending on the angle you view it from, the face either shows simple hash marks or numerals around the dial.

Named for its similarity to clocks which appear in train stations around Europe, the Station Numbers Hologram clock was designed by Dutch designers Ruben van Boxtel & Reinier Buijs for Karlsson.

And while I’m not really sure that the display counts as a true hologram, there’s definitely some sort of lenticular printing illusion used to produce the effect. And if simple black on white isn’t your thing, the clocks are also available in white on red and white on black versions with stainless steel accents.

You can find a wide variety of Karlsson clocks – including these ones – over at UK retailer ClockCo for £30 (appx. $59 USD) each.

I just love the industrial design of this compact portable sound dock for the iPod. The einö Portable Speaker System is small enough to fit in your purse or backpack, so it’s the perfect companion for traveling with your media player.

Measuring in at about 7.7″ (w) x 4.2″ (h) x 1.3″ (d), the whole system fits inside of a convenient matching carrying case that’s just a hair bigger than a large wallet.

Sound is output to a pair of drivers at 1.4 watts per channel via a Class D stereo amp, and the speakers claim to pump out enhanced low frequencies thanks to something called “Maxx BassR” technology.

In addition to the gorgeous red design shown above, the einö is available in blue, white and black too.

As is the case with many cool things, the einö currently is only for sale in Japan. If you’re willing to try your luck with some Japanese translation and paying in Yen, you can pick one up on sale from FLIPClick for ¥5980 (appx. $56 USD).

Perfect for those of you who like a little geek with your chic (or is that the other way around?), this quirky QWERTY keyboard design wallet helps you keep all your personal items in order.

The wallet offers plentiful storage for credit cards, cash, spare change and even a checkbook, but no matter how hard you press on the keys, it still won’t control your computer (although it really should.)

Designed by California indie crafter QuietDoing, the QWERTY pocketbook [$44] is covered with a bold black and white keyboard fabric, coated in clear vinyl (for added durability), and lined with a lime-green and navy-blue vinyl interior.

Guys, don’t despair. The QWERTY wallet isn’t just for the ladies. There’s also a bi-fold men’s version available too [$28].

You can find QWERTY wallets and plenty other clever accessories (I especially like this funky turntablist wallet) over in QuietDoing’s Etsy shop.

This has got to be one of the most amazing clock designs I’ve ever seen. At first glance, the display looks like a bunch of random matchsticks, but over time, they gradually transform into words that tell the time.

Conceived by Dutch industrial designer Christiaan Postma, the clock goes beyond the simple dial and number paradigms we’re all used to seeing, and really thinks outside of the box. Postma used over 150 individual clock mechanisms to power the 55-inch square timepiece.

For those of you with Flash installed (who doesn’t these days?), check out the animation below to see how it really works.

At this point, it’s not clear if Postma plans to produce the word clock, or if it’s simply a design prototype. Regardless, it’s a really unique idea, and I’d be thrilled to hang one on my wall if he ever does bring these to market.

This modern backpack is sure to draw attention as you walk down the street — especially if you’ve got the volume cranked up. You see those big black patches? They’re loudspeakers.

Created by industrial design student Joonas Saaranen, the Reppo II backpack features a built in pair of full-range speakers and an amplifier, so you can kick out the jams as you walk down the street. The only thing better would be if that big black patch were a subwoofer. Of course, that might shatter your vertebrae if you turned up the volume too much.

Saaranen’s concept design has gotten as far as a functional prototype at this point, but he hasn’t revealed if he’ll ever have them produced en masse. In the mean time, if you happen to be in Berlin, Germany (where Joonas currently resides) and hear someone coming down the street wearing this bad boy, offer up the mad props he deserves.

Whether you’re outfitting your media room with a Grauman’s Chinese Theater motif, or you just like scaly reptilians, these dragon speakers are sure to make a dramatic statement in your home.

Designed by UK studio Axelsson Design, these awesome dragon speakers look like something that belong in the villain’s lair in a John Woo film. The 2-way speakers are made from sturdy polyurethane plastic cabinets, and bass is actually ported through the mouth of each dragon (no fire breathing, however). Both the 1-inch tweeter and 4-inch woofer are provided by respected audio manufacturer Peerless.

The speakers measure about 15.4-inches tall, and are available in gloss black, white or candy apple red finishes. Axelsson also says they’ll embellish them in a color of your choice if you have something else in mind (how about something really off the wall, like a GREEN dragon?)

A pair of Axelsson’s dragon speakers will set you back $940 USD.

I just love the clean, minimal design of this white-on-white LED clock from Japan. The simple dot-matrix display is powered by bright white LEDs layered beneath a clear and white acrylic shell.

The clock offers alarm capability, and can be automatically set via a radio signal (although it’s possible this feature only works in Japan). Measuring in at about 4-inches wide and 2-inches deep, It’s just the right size for a desktop or bedside table.

Alas, this is yet another one of those wonderful items which appears to only be available in Japan. If you’re willing to do a little translation, you might be able to coax the guys at Visions Coax into shipping you one. Retail price for the clock is ¥7875 (appx. $73 USD).

[BTW, these look a heck of a lot like these dot-matrix LED clocks I featured a while back. Only those ones came blue or green dot patterns - but I now prefer the white one.]

Design virtuoso Philippe Starck continues to crank out some beautifully minimal timepieces, and these are no exception. The Starck Palindrome series offers up a design so clean that it doesn’t even look like it has a minute hand at first glance.

Look closer, and you’ll notice that the minute hand is actually replaced by the Starck logo on the watch’s slightly ovoid face. Then, a single rectangular block displays the current hour.

I was able to find these watches from Fossil in a men’s black ($125) and women’s white model ($110). With a little digging, you might be able to grab the hard-to-find, but oh-so-cool silver and orange version if you Google around a bit.
