I don’t often post about automotive technology, hacks or mods because I don’t know a lot about cars, but this one is too neat to pass up: a car with two sets of front windows, a pair that’s transparent and another pair that’s tinted.

The mod was made by 20-year old gearhead Lech Sokolov on his second hand Lada 21. Unfortunately even if I was familiar with auto jargon I still wouldn’t be able to tell you how Sokolov pulled it off because he wrote his how-to in Russian, and I’m almost certain that Google Translate is as clueless about the language as I am.

What I think I got – remember, Google Translate may be making this all up – is that the mod cost about 5,000 rubles (~$159 USD), including the cost of the two extra window panes and the tinted film that he used to coat them. Sokolov also said that the major drawback of his mod is that he had to take out the amplifiers (speakers?) out of the doors to make room for the extra thingamajigs that he installed. Then again he ended up with a car that is not only more versatile – all the benefits of tinted windows without their drawbacks – but is significantly insulated against sound as well. Sokolov, you naughty boy.

While I don’t have a Roomba, I used to have a boss who kept watching the infomercials a few years ago and finally got himself one. Love them or hate them, robot vacuum cleaners are here to stay. This latest ‘bot isn’t a Roomba, or a robot vacuum cleaner per se, but a robot which will clean your windows. Now that sounds cool.

The Windro bot was put together by some scientists working for the Pohang Institute of Intelligent Robotics in South Korea. The robot is composed to two modules that stick together through the glass using magnets. Hmm, doesn’t seem very practical, and this ‘bot won’t really work on most windows, but hey, it’s a first step, right?

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

I bet that it won’t work in places that have those heavier, double paned windows. Odds are that it will just fall off! I’d hate to see one of these climbing up the side of a skyscraper, then losing its grip.

Created out of recycled circuit boards by a guy simply going by “Dan”, they’re not actually windows, but give off the appearance of stained glass because of the colors he selected. The window frame itself was made by using sandstone for added effect. Dan says that the theme is a sort of good vs evil, since one side is sort of red while the other is blue.

It looks amazing and it makes me wonder what else people will make out of old tech that otherwise might have ended up in the garbage dump.

Just stick the little 4-inch tall ‘bot on your window, switch it on, and it’ll automatically walk towards the ceiling (or whatever direction you point it in).

It also looks cool ascending the outside of your fish tank, a bathroom mirror or even a metal file cabinet. Climb@tron can be found over on ThinkGeek for just about $8 USD.

For those of us working in offices with no exterior windows, we’re always looking for ways to bring a little light into our lives. You could grab one of those outdoor scene rotators I showed you the other day, but if you’d like something a little more subtle, check this out.

The Bright Blind comes from the minds of designers Makoto Hirahara and Hisakazu Nabeshima (for Japanese design collective Studio Mongoose). It’s a window shade that hangs on your wall and is backlit by electroluminescent sheets to provide simulated daylight in even the darkest of offices. Just like a real window shade, brightness is adjusted by twirling the plastic shade control.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The shade is currently just a hand-built prototype, so I’m hoping they decide to produce these for purchase soon. Head on over to the GNR8 Pipeline site for more information (and a ton of other cool design concepts).
