Today’s handheld videogame systems all have built-in clocks, but if you want to see the time on a Game Boy the closest you can get is the Watch Boy, an official Nintendo merchandise released back in the 90s. The design of the watch is unabashedly childish, which is why it’s awesome.

Despite the fact that it’s a wristwatch, I think the time-telling function of the Watch Boy is just a bonus. You’ll look at it not to figure out the present but to remember the past.

The Watch Boy is no longer in production, adding to its appeal to collectors and gamers alike. It’s not surprising then that a seller on eBay is asking for at least $100 (USD) for his Watch Boy, and the price will keep going up until the auction ends on May 19th. That’s a ridiculous price for a plastic and rubber wristwatch, but I say it’s worth it.

Tokyoflash is notorious for releasing wristwatches with complicated designs, so I was a bit surprised to see them release the minimalistic On Air wristwatch. It barely has any tricks up its sleeve, merely combining the hour hand and the minute display. If that’s still too much for you you should stick to your smartphone’s clock. And stay in school.

For example, the watch above is displaying 3:45. Get it now? Fine. Here are more examples:

In keeping with its minimalist design, the watch face has four touch-sensitive zones – the top, bottom, left and right – for setting the time, date, alarm and light, all of which are activated by a prolonged touch. The On Air watch is yet another design which started out on TF’s Design Studio Blog, and based on a concept by Iskender and Adilet Asanaliev.

It’s available in either silver or black stainless steel, and in natural grey LCD with blue LED backlighting, green LCD with matching green LED backlighting, red LCD with matching red LED backlighting, or gold LCD with orange LED backlighting.

If you like what you’re (not) seeing, set an alarm within the next 13 hours reminding you to order the On Air watch from Tokyoflash. Wait longer than that and you’ll miss out on its $169 to $179 (USD) launch price, which is $20 less than its regular price.

The first thing I look for when it comes to watches is ease of reading the time off of it. I mean, what’s the point of having some really fancy wristwatch when you won’t be able to tell the time, also because of it’s fancy schmancy design?

In short, the LED Domino FX wristwatch sent in from someone named Lloyd from Australia will definitely not be for me. I think dominoes is a fun game, but using it as a design to tell the time just, well, makes things complicated. I mean, remember the Domino Clock?

But for the people who can be bothered to take some extra time out to understand how the watch works, here’s what Lloyd has to say about his design: “This watch design is based on one of my puzzle ideas and, although it looks baffling initially, is actually incredibly easy to understand. It is called Domino FX because of the 4 domino-like figures in the display. However, these are not really dominoes, but digital 8s with up to 7 spots arranged inside each.”

“Up to 3 spots may appear in the top half and up to 4 in the bottom half. These spots indicate which, if any, of the 7 straight lines that make up each 8 must be omitted to make the time or date visible. You know when a line must be omitted because a spot appears right next to it.”

Get it? Don’t get it? You might need to read his explanation a couple more times (and check the display on the wristwatch more than a couple of times) to get the hang of the whole concept.

Art Lebedev Studio has become famous for their thematic designs, often mimicking other objects or exaggerating an object’s characteristic in practical ways. Well, mostly. Their new concept watch isn’t as humorous or striking as their other designs, but it’s still noteworthy. Also noteworthy is the apparent boredom that led to the creation of the watch. According to its product page, the point of creating the Integralus was “to bring an idea to life.”

I wish they’d brought the Machine Gun Jetpack to life instead. But enough about my desires. The main design concept with the Integralus is that its watch face also serves as its enclosure, which you’ll love if you hate gaps in your watch straps. As you can see the watch face splits into two when unlocked. The Integralus will still display the time and date even when in this state because each half has its own battery.

Aside from a cleaner, more minimal look, the design of the Integralus also makes it easier to wear the watch. I’m guessing the strap is made of a flexible material so it can further accommodate a wide range of wrist sizes. The studio hasn’t mentioned yet if they’ll turn the Integralus into a real product, but if they come through with stuff like these, they certainly could make the Integralus real.

I’ve been so lazy lately that I haven’t had the batteries of two of my wristwatches changed yet. So as things stand, they’re still lying on my dresser. I still wear them but they’re more like accessories now, since the batteries are already deader than dead.

So what’s an energy-saving alternative that will look hip, colorful, and futuristic on your wrist? It’s designer David Blanc’s Elusive watch that’s still quite elusive nowadays, considering that it’s not actually being manufactured yet.

Here’s another possible reason why the watch was named like so: the watch’s face is also elusive. That’s because it doesn’t have a face – just a hole where a face is supposed to be. This is where the battery-saving stuff comes in.

Instead of displaying the time on a LED or LCD 24/7 or having two hands running across it at any given moment, you have to insert your finger into the face to have it displayed: one finger for the time, and two for the date. After it’s triggered, the time would be projected onto your skin using a tiny, harmless laser beam. Pretty neat concept, eh?

I consider it extremely wasteful when parents allow their kids to just discard their old stuff even though they’re still working or in good condition, just because they’ve gotten tired of it or bored with its look.

I think it’s a bad idea to cultivate such wasteful attitudes in children, especially when they’re still growing up. Not only that, but it would also be quite taxing on the environment because a lot of resources actually go into the whole manufacturing and disposal process, even for something as small as a wristwatch.

So the next time your kid asks for a new watch, think about getting them Sprout’s Biodegradable Watch. It’s not for boys, that’s for sure, because it features some pretty soft girly tones in the watch face and dial. Splashes of blue, pink, and green decorate Sprout’s timepiece. Even I want it – and I’m already in my early twenties.

The strap on this thing is actually manufactured from organic cotton. The case and buckle? That’s biodegradable corn resin. The watch also features a dial that’s made from bamboo and a mineral crystal lens completes the entire eco-friendliness of this thing. At $34 (USD), I think it’s well worth the money.

The Sprout Biodegradable Watch is available from Fred Flare, if you’re interested.

A challenger appears in the competition for the title of World’s Most Unreadable Timepiece, a competition that no one in particular asked for nor wanted. When I first saw the Atom Watch I was so sure that this was from those crazy designers at Tokyoflash. But apparently, not only is this not from Tokyoflash, it also seems even harder to read than the company’s take on an atomic-themed watch.

According to the product page, the hour and minute hands of the Atom Watch follow the path of the electrons, while the second hand “originates” from the nucleus. Yeahhhh…nope. Don’t get it. I miss school.

Oh wait! It’s that smaller circle that indicates the minutes, while the ellipses are the second hand. Is that it? Dammit. I wish there was a video of this thing in action.

…and that picture does not help at all. The watch is clearly on a right hand, but it’s worn lefty style. Unless this person has two thumbs on his left hand. Or that’s actually a middle hand. I don’t know. Freakin’ Atom Watch, how do you work? Someone get one from ThinkGeek for $120 (USD) and figure it out. Buy several and you can make a molecule watch. Sorry. Couldn’t help it.

For years, everyone wanted a wristwatch phone, but they’ve been eclipsed by really good smartphones. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to pretend that I’m a spy like anyone else, but like many of the iPod Nano watch bracelets have shown, it just doesn’t make sense to plug in some headphones onto something that’s strapped on your wrist.

This watch is from Abit and will only be available in Japan, at least for now. It’s available for the Willcom cell phone carrier. There are yet no details on price and when it will be released, but it’s supposed to be used for data retrieval via the cell phone network, a sort of cloud-based watch phone.

It’s got a certain geek appeal. What do you guys think? Or you will wait for the iPod Nano phone watch instead?

TokyoFlash is going soft on us. After all their mind-numbing watches and designs, I think they’ve finally decided to have mercy on us. That’s why their latest concept is as straightforward as it gets. Just look at the difference in the squiggly lines and you’ll see the numbers in the middle. Eventually.

As you can see, once you realize that the lines displayed do have differences, it’s just a matter of figuring out the outline of the numbers that they form. Compared to this design, this one’s a cakewalk. Here’s the display magnified:

No calculations, no need to memorize symbols or count flashing lights. Just a few seconds of staring and maybe a minor headache – assuming your brain can see it at all. As further proof that Tokyoflash is pandering to our inferior minds, you can even turn off the illusion completely at the press of a button.

Seriously though I like this design not only because I can easily read it compared to their other watches, but because it’s simple. Wacky mechanics make for wacky displays. If you like this design as well, vote for it at the Tokyoflash blog.

Romain Jerome is known for turning tragedy into luxury, and its latest masterpiece is no different.
Say what you will about the absurdity of the concept, but I think we can all agree that this is one fine-looking timepiece. To up the ante, Romain Jerome will make no more than one of this special watch, and it will come with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it contains Eyjafjallajökull’s vomit.

We don’t know how much it will cost, but we’re sure we can’t afford it anyway. Here’s a little tip to whoever snags the watch: don’t wear it around Europeans – especially in airports.

Ah, product designers. You and your neat concepts and even neater illustrations. Never asking “What’s possible?”, but instead, “What’s awesome?”, which is a pretty good mentality if you ask me. Here’s one of your brethren’s deliciously high-tech idea for a timepiece: a watch whose minute and hour hands are lasers. LASERS!

Jihun Yeom’s Aurora watch looks like a watch without the actual watch in the middle – in short, there’s a hole where the actual timepiece should be. But if you tap its bezel, the red minute laser hand and the blue hour laser hand appear. In other words, if you’re other hand isn’t free, then you won’t be able to activate it. Too impractical? Maybe. Impossible? Probably. Do I want one? Definitely.

One of the more interesting items at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show is a .22-caliber pistol with a high-tech safety feature. Made by German company Armatix, the pistol will only fire if it is within a few inches of a special wristwatch, which sends a “wireless arming signal” to the pistol.

An LED at the back of the pistol flashes green to signify that it is unlocked; the LED turns red when the arming signal is not detected.

The Armatix website describes a highly similar concept for a gun, but adds that not only will the gun be tied to a specific wristwatch, the wristwatch will be paired to a specific fingerprint as well. I’m not sure if the actual gun-watch combo has this functionality. A limited edition version of the high-tech pistol will be available starting next month for €7,000 (approx. $9,700 USD).

No seriously: “Developed and manufactured in Switzerland, the Black Belt Watch is solely reserved for black belt holders, regardless of the martial art style. Each practitioner has to provide an official rank certificate”, otherwise the watch will kill its unworthy owner at the stroke of midnight using deadly watchjutsu. I’m kidding.

The Black Belt watch is water-resistant for up to 100 meters and has a satin-finished, PVD-treated steel case. The sandblasted steel bezel features the Kanji characters for each hour. A black belt adorns the watch’s face, while the minute and hour hands were made to look like Shinai (the wooden bamboo practice swords used in Kendo). The timepiece embodies traditional martial arts values, like Yu (Courage), Meiyo (Honor), and Ramen (Noodles). I’m kidding! Please don’t punch me.

The people behind this ubermacho yet sexy watch are martial artists-turned-watchmakers Claudio Alessi – a “multi style Sensei who is a Mixed Martial Arts instructor” – and tournament-proven karate practitioner Yvan Arpa. What a combo. In making the Black Belt watch, the two martial artists are still fighting the good fight: a percentage of sales from the watch will be donated to the Little Dreams Foundation, which helps youth excel in arts and sports.

The watch can be yours for 500 kicks to the solar plexus dollars. No, of course not; unfortunately not even the official website has the lowdown on the price or the release date of the Black Belt. But you can already pre-order it, just make sure you have a black belt!

Projects Watches are known for selling fashionable, quirky and overall just well-designed watches at prices that people can actually afford. Fortunately, their new IRIDIUM watch is no different – it’s a fun and affordable watch. Designed by Daniel Will-Harris, the idea behind the IRIDIUM watch is simple: Instead of using watch hands to tell the time, IRIDIUM uses colors. The current hour is blue, minute is red. If the two are in the same number – say it’s 12 midnight – then the number turns purple.

The case is made of brushed steel with Swiss parts. Projects describes the black leather band as “buttery soft.” Mmmm. You can get your own IRIDIUM watch from Watchismo for $119 (USD).

Luxury watch makers Romain Jerome have an array of limited edition timepieces that possesses what they call “Titanic DNA.” The term refers to the fact that the watches have bezels made from “authentic steel from the wreck [of the Titanic] lying 3,840 meters under the sea, and steel supplied by the Harland & Wolff shipyards in Belfast, where the Titanic was built almost a century ago.” And among these rare wristwatches is an even rarer wristwatch, the Tourbillon Steampunk Ala Grande.

As you can see, the bezels were intentionally rusted, or, to use a fancy word, oxidized. A special coating has been applied to the bezels to prevent further rusting. Now the bezels in the limited limited edition Tourbillon Steampunk Ala Grande (Romain Jerome sure know how to name their products) are not only rusted, they’re “studded with 80 hand-applied rivets and have four bolts that resemble watertight hatches.”

I honestly think that honoring a notorious and deadly ship is questionable at the very least. Nonetheless, this is one kick ass watch with looks that match its undisclosed yet no doubt titanic price tag. Only 9 Tourbillon Steampunk Ala Grande watches were made. Because there are only 9 people in the world who can afford the thing. Kidding.

A hundred years from now, Romain Jerome will be releasing the Recession Clusterfrack Ala Grande, watches with bits of concrete from the buildings of Circuit City, AIG and Lehman Brothers. Still kidding. I hope.
