If you’ve ever been asked to have a radiograph of your body taken, then you know that X-ray machines are quite large and even the portable ones are carried by large vans. Until now. Japanese company Mikasa recently introduced a battery-powered X-ray machine that’s small enough to be carried by hand.

The machine is relatively lightweight at 7kg (approx. 15lbs.) including its battery, which can power the machine for up to 300 uses per charge. The machine will of course be a boon in emergency situations and in remote areas.

But the best thing about this machine is that, as YouTuber rubbermuck noted, it looks like something that the Ghostbusters would use. When there’s something strange, in your right boob, who you gonna call? The doctor!

Electronics and electricity geek Grenadier aspires to someday be a radiologist. But instead of waiting to use a proper X-Ray machine at a hospital or doctor’s office, he decided to build his own at home.

The dangerous looking contraption has at its heart a single Coolidge Tube, which is a vacuum tube capable of producing X-Rays when 75 kilovolts of power is applied to it. Thankfrully Grenadier is experienced with high voltage gear, so that was no problem for him to provide ample current to power up his X-Ray tube.

The left-hand box provides an Arduino-based controller, and cool looking gauges to check amperage and voltage, as well as a Nixie display which shows exposure time. The right-hand box contains the tube and all high voltage components, so it can be placed at a distance from the controller. Since Grenadier doesn’t have any X-Ray film lying around, he’s managed to rig up something called a “scintillation screen”, a plastic sheet which fluoresces when exposed to radiation.

This let him see through any object he fires the X-Rays at. As you can see from the photos here, the results are pretty awesome. However, this is one time that I can most definitely say “Do not try this at home. EVER.”

Hopefully, Grenadier has taken precautions to protect himself from the radiation with a lead shield of some sort, and he never tries to X-Ray the cat. You can read more details about the DIY X-Ray machine build here.

So here’s more proof that sex sells. I think it’s sort of sad why a lot of retailers push women dressed in skimpy or revealing stuff when they aren’t even selling said clothing (or rather, lingerie) in the first place. Liquor ads? Perfume campaigns? Ads for deodorant?

And now it’s spread on over to ads for winter clothing. Yes, you read that right: winter clothing. Moosejaw decided that they wanted to boost their sales by showing their models in their underwear. How? By releasing an X-ray app that worked with their Winter Catalog to do just that.

Just fire up the app and hover your device over the print catalog or digital catalog, and you can see the models in all their near-naked splendor. And it worked, too. Moosejaw has seen a 37% increase in sales from the same period in November of last year. At least they didn’t discriminate, and have both women and men in their undies.

Gary Wohlfeill, Creative Director at Moosejaw, explains the move: “Our goal at Moosejaw is to always create a unique and notable customer experience. Something that everyone who shops with us will want to tell ten friends about. The X-Ray catalog and X-Ray App are designed to create an incredibly cool, interactive and fun experience that breaks the barrier between our print and digital brand.”

What do you think?

Ever thought about what your gadgets would look like when they’re X-rayed? Or how would they look if you would have X-ray vision? Well, Spanish photographer Max de Esteban surely asked himself this question when he decided to create this series of photos of X-rayed objects that he called Proposition One.

The cool thing is that they’re not really X-rays. Max actually disassembled these objects and took photos of the individual components, then layered them back together to create the X-ray effect. Max chose to expose a cassette recorder, various cameras, an old reel-to-reel deck, and other delightful tech relics. In the collection, you’ll find a bunch of other retro gadgets X-rayed, which is even better in my opinion, because I honestly don’t want to know what an X-rayed smartphone looks like. It can’t be nearly as interesting as something mechanical.

You can see the rest of the Proposition One series here, or see them in person in New York at the Klompching Gallery through December 9, 2011.

One time I was at one of my cousin’s birthday parties at the park in our town. We were specifically told not to go on what had to be the world’s highest monkey bars. The geodesic dome structure was a good 10 feet off the ground not counting the hole worn underneath by the years of kids plummeting to their demise.

Naturally, we went to the top, warnings from parents that we would fall and break an arm unheeded. My cousin promptly falls and broke his arm as soon as we climbed to the top. All he had after a trip to the ER was an ugly white cast and melted ice cream. What he needed was one of these cool Casttoos.

The things come in several pre-printed varieties with carious pictures of broken bones that look like cartoon drawings. The real coolness though is the custom cover with your own x-ray image on it. That way you can just point to the picture on your cast when someone asks what you did. A custom cover can set you back as much as $40, but just think of the time you would save not having to explain yourself to everyone you know.

If you’re a tinkerer like me, you’ve probably cracked the case open on at least a few of your electronic gadgets to see what they look like on the inside. But I bet you’ve never seen the guts of your video game console quite like this.

It’s pretty obvious that’s an Xbox 360, but see if you can identify them all:

I’ll give you a clue. Look at the faint curved handle at the top. Yep, that’s a Gamecube.

Hmm, is that an NES or an SNES controller? You’ve got 2 seconds…

It amazes me how absolute empty the Atari 2600 case was compared to today’s consoles. Imagine how much better the graphics would have been if they’d actually filled the box with circuitry.

Contrast that to the jam-packed Sony PS3. There’s definitely not much room to wiggle inside that case:

This one is pretty self-evident. But is it a DS Lite, DS Phat or a DSi? And where are the cracked plastic hinges? Oh, they’re on my DS Lite.

I’m assuming that the guy who took these photos works as a radiologist, or maybe in airport security. Or maybe he’s just got X-ray vision and cameras implanted in his eyeballs. Yeah, I like that idea best.

I’ll leave the rest of the images up to you to figure out.

I’ll give you a hint. This is NOT a transistor radio or an 8-track player – or is it?

All I know is that this guy definitely isn’t a SEGA fan.

Usually when I think about X-rays, it conjures up images of sitting on a table in an ill-fitting hospital gown with a weighty lead apron draped over some part of my body. Fortunately, these X-ray lamps require not so much as a visit to the doctor’s office.

Designer Wonsuk Cho created these pendant lamps using actual X-rays of incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Alas and alack, there is no information on if or when you’ll ever be able to buy these for your own pad. For now, you’ll have to settle for something a little less elegant. Just slice up that old film of your fractured limb, glue it onto the sides of an Artemide Petronilla ceiling fixture and hang it up.
