Got some old floppy disks lying around? How about a little spare time? Are you a Star Wars fan? If you answered yes to all three of those questions, here’s the perfect project for you – a Millennium Falcon, X-Wing Fighter and Death Star cobbled together from old floppy disk parts.

Instructables contributor Jetpack5 has put together a tutorial showing how you can make these fun desk toys using old 3.5-inch floppies, and a couple of everyday tools like needlenose pliers, a hammer and a nail. Oh, and the Death Star requires a bunch of rubber bands too. Both the Falcon and the Death Star are made identifiable by the round metal floppy spindle, while the X-Wing is comprised mostly of those metal shutters which used to protect the delicate floppy disk innards.

I think these little models manage to capture the spirit of the originals, despite their relatively primitive shapes. If you’d like to make some for yourself, use the Force and head over to Instructables for the full instructions.

What other Star Wars creations do you think you could make from old floppies? I think you could probably make a pretty cool Darth Vader helmet from old black 5-1/4″ floppies. Any volunteers?

Star Wars fans, here’s something you probably never imagined would happen to your beloved X-Wing and TIE Fighters – they’ve been turned into slot cars. The new sets come courtesy of UK outfit Scalextric.

The first set onto the scene is called the tiny 1:64 scale Death Star Attack set, and it comes with both X-Wing and TIE Fighters, pimped out with wheels on the bottom so they can speed around the slot track, which measures in at approximately 149 inches in total length. The ships are both lighted and the track even glows in the dark. I can only imagine that Luke could have skipped using The Force to find his way to the chewy middle of the Death Star had his path been guided by a slot track.

The second set is of the slightly more appropriate Battle of Endor, which comes in a 1:32 scale kit. It comes with a pair of speed bikes – one with Luke Skywalker, the other with a Scout Trooper – zipping along through the forests of Endor (or is that the California redwoods?) Sadly, the kit doesn’t come with any Ewoks you can run over, but there are a few standing by the side of the track trying to knock down some AT-ST walkers. Total track length for the Endor scene about 169 inches, which means that when you take the larger scale into account, you actually more bang for your buck with the Death Star scene.

All of the flying craft are held to the track with Scalextric’s “Magnatraction,” tiny neodymium magnets – but I imagine they still have to have wheels to get around. I don’t think they’ve quite worked out the quantum levitation thing on slot car sets yet.

There’s no word on a release date for either set, but Scalextric has them both listed on their website now. The Micro Scalextric Death Star set will retail for £69.99 (~$109 USD), while the larger Battle of Endor set is listed at £99.99 (~$156 USD). Be sure to stop by their site to be notified when they’re in stock.

Of all the fighters and space ships that were in the Star Wars flicks, my favorite was always the X-Wing that Luke flew. I never had one as a kid when the toys were out for some reason, each time I had the loot saved, I spent it on something else. I did have the giant Millennium Falcon though. I like LEGO stuff and when its Star Wars ships made from LEGO, I get all tingly.

Mike Psiaki created this very accurate X-Wing fighter using LEGO bricks, and it looks awesome. I always wonder how exactly the people that build these accurate models of ships do it using only LEGO components. One of the most detailed and accurate parts is the nose of the ship. I wonder how long it took him to figure that part out alone.

The LEGO model apparently even has working landing gear, and the wings can even open and close.

There is even room inside the little cockpit for a minifig Luke, and R2-D2 in the back. What do you think? Is this the best LEGO X-wing you have ever seen?

While these plush Star Wars vehicles won’t exactly make the jump to hyperspace anytime soon, they should do just fine for impromptu battles in your living room. Or at least to keep your neck in a comfy position while you sit on the couch crying over the changes Lucas made to the Blu-ray edition.

Choose from Luke’s X-Wing Fighter, a soft and squishy AT-AT or the ship that did the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs, the fiber-filled Millennium Falcon. Each one of these plush toys measures about 6 inches across, and will look great scattered across your couch like the aftermath of the battle on Hoth. (Though a Snow Speeder would be more appropriate than an X-Wing.)

These each sell for just $9.95 (USD) each over at ThinkGeek. I only wish they had a plush TIE Fighter and Death Star to go with.

I was strolling down the aisles at the CES show today, when what did I see but a wondrous remote-controlled aircraft hovering in the sky. What was it that I spied?

Nope, as much as I want to believe this airborne beauty is an X-Wing Fighter, it’s actually an RCX 4 Star Stryker, I swear.

Whatever you call it, it’s a whole lot of awesome. The RCX 4 uses 3D gyroscopic technology to hover in a perfectly-balanced way – perfect for beginner R/C flyers. Not only can it be controlled from up to 1-mile away, it can fly for about 10 minutes on a single charge. Watch it fly through the air with the greatest of ease, doing its best to avoid Lucasfilm attorneys at every turn…

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

And the best part is, it comes in this nifty padded metal case, along with the controller.

The whole kit-and-kaboodle retails for $399 (USD) over at DigitTronics, but if you happen to be hanging out in the South Hall at CES this week, you can grab one for a show special price of $299.
