Here are two things that might not be that familiar to young gamers: LiveScribe pens are magical little buggers that record written notes and audio. Zork on the other hand, is a legendary interactive fiction-type series of computer games. In interactive fiction games, players enter text commands to navigate and interact with the world. YouTube user chipos81 wrote a program for the LiveScribe Echo pen to make Zork I playable on it. As in you write something and the game responds. Awesome.

Here’s the game in action, prefaced with a lesser hack. (If you don’t care about TicTacToe, jump to 2:10):

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

Granted, it’ll take a longer time to play the game because the pen only has a one line display, but it’s still borderline magical. Do a D&D hack next chipos81!

I think I must have killed hundreds of hours wandering my way through the twisty dungeons of Zork, so when I saw this bit of retro-geek art, it made me grin from ear-to-ear.

Apparently, Brian Gaines was a big Zork Fan back in the day too, so he and his high school pal made this excellent Zork stained glass art to show their fanboy ways all the way back in 1983. I have to say it looks mighty fine after all these years.

All I want to do now is type in “>GET STAINED GLASS WINDOW”, but I know that my computer will just say “I don’t know the word ‘stained’,” or maybe “You can’t see any window here!”. Go ahead, try it for yourself.

To get in on the action, just type:

mail lozbeta@joltonline.com

Though, since such basic commands usually don’t work in the real world (alas), you might try sending an e-mail regarding your request in a more conventional manner. Legends of Zork is being billed as an online (non-MMO) game for casual, timewasting play.
