15 Travel Destinations Around the World That Failed to Impress

Exploring a new country or city can be exciting, but there’s nothing more terrible than when the reality falls short of the online reviews. What’s even worse is the disappointment of realizing your time and money have been spent on a terrible experience.

While not every traveler has a bad experience, for many, the following locations have failed to live up to their promise of a dream vacation.

1. San Felipe, Mexico

Travelers may be ready for sun, sea, and sunburn in San Felipe, but they may be let down by the area’s environmental degradation. The fisheries are decimated, and the quality of the beaches has declined. What’s more is that, due to the economic depression, local authorities try to generate revenue by forcing tourists to pay fines for traffic violations and public intoxication.

2. Egypt

Although the historical sites in Egypt are incredible, the hagglers and scammers in the country are not. Another problem female travelers struggled with was the reported aggressiveness towards women.

3. Rural Oklahoma

Rural Oklahoma has natural springs, perfect for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities, but a vacation there turned into a bad situation. One traveler took his family to the natural springs along the Illinois River and found the area was covered with ticks. The campground water also smelled like sulfur, which didn’t make for a good experience, either.

4. Jamaica

Jamaica is a famous honeymoon spot, with its beautiful, well-maintained resorts, but beyond the resorts, tourists are often subject to police harassment or are assaulted by local criminals.

5. Delhi

Many travelers to Delhi have said that being on the roads is terrifying due to bad drivers. The poor healthcare system is another worry travelers have. They worry they will end up in a worse condition if they visit a hospital.

6. Southern Illinois

Although lovely in spring and summer, Southern Illinois becomes “desolate, brown, and cold” in winter. The area isn’t aesthetically pleasing for travelers when the surroundings look bleak, and the snow turns to grey sludge.

7. Lake Azov, Ukraine

The juicy, sweet fruit grown in Ukraine makes it hard to enjoy eating fruit anywhere else. However, once you’ve been devoured by mosquitos along the banks of Lake Azov, you’ll want to leave the fruit behind for a mosquito-less vacation.

8. Venice

Venice may have gorgeous architecture and beautiful scenery, but the crowded streets, suspicious vendors, and street scammers make the visit less than ideal. Travelers report it’s twice as expensive as other parts of Italy.

9. Tunisia

Like Jamaica, Tunisia has lovely holiday resorts, but leaving those resorts isn’t advised. Tourists are harassed by street vendors and dragged into shops by hagglers trying to get them to buy their products.

10. Miami

If you love warm, tropical places, then Miami is the place for you. However, many visiting travelers can’t handle how humid and muggy it is. Even Miami residents admit the humidity is brutal and that summer can be unbearable since nothing ever really dries out.

11. Branson, Missouri

Branson is known for its many theaters featuring mostly has-been music acts. Although families spend their vacations in Branson, travelers say there’s little to do in the city and find it rather dull.

12. Albania

The alluring idea of an Albanian beach holiday entices many travelers. Unfortunately, they return less than impressed from their getaway, saying there’s trash everywhere. The beach bars and restaurants compete for who can play the loudest music, and scammers often target tourists on the streets.

13. Jordan

Jordan is a beautiful country with many historical sites and ruins, and is home to one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Visitors flock to Petra and the Karak Castle. However, female travelers say women should beware, since they may be the targets of aggression.

14. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is supposed to be a “once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Caribbean,” but for many travelers, it’s their last trip to the area. Many reported they found the trash sprawled across the streets off-putting. Travelers are also warned about running into the criminal element if they decide to leave their resorts.
