Word on the street is that Apple is working on a series of “ultra-portable PCs,” potentially for release at the upcoming MacWorld event in January 2007. Speculation is that these devices could operate either entirely from flash memory or from a flash memory/hard drive combination. Flash memory is lightning fast, has been getting cheaper and cheaper, certainly would reduce power consumption and device size, so it’s reasonable to think that’s the direction that more and more mobile devices will be going.
Intel, Apple’s main chip supplier of late, recently announced that they would be making devices that could boot completely from static (NAND) flash memory, so this platform may come into play here.
