This high-tech surfboard won’t actually surf for you, but it could let the judges in competitive surfing events know what exactly you’re doing, because it’s easy to miss the details when the waves are high.
The Tecnalia Surfsens board is loaded with a gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS, strain gauges, and pressure sensors to accurately measure your speed, the height of the wave, and more. The data isn’t yet transmitted wirelessly, but must be uploaded once you’re back on dry land.
The Spanish company Pukas make this with Tecnalia, and its currently being tested by pro surfers. I wonder if having the data this surfboard collects will allow the company to someday make a smart surfboard, one that could surf by itself.
