I’ve never been particularly adept at cutting precise forms with an X-Acto knife, and then if I do anything with glue, it ends up everywhere it’s not supposed to. So when I see work like this, I can really appreciate the amount of artistic talent and technique it takes to construct something as incredible as these papercraft retro gadgets.
Designers Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmerman of Zim and Zou created all of these precise, scale replicas of classic technology for their Back-to-Basics collection. While I don’t quite remember my Walkman being this colorful, all of the other details are spot-on.
I can’t believe they even put a tiny spool of tape inside the reels of that cassette. Now that’s what I call attention to detail. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes footage of Zim and Zou putting their knife (and glue) skills to the test:
