Acoustic speakers are a cool way to boost the sound on your gadgets without electricity, but the Sonastand does more than just passively amplify sound. It also doubles as a stand for your iPhone, and it actually looks quite nice too. I really like how portable this thing is. It easily fits in your pocket and doesn’t take up much space at all.
Designed by Colin Chu and Bob Winbrow of Kinetic Custom Machine, the Sonastand is made out of machined aluminum and works for the iPhone 4 and 4S. It apparently has more than 20,000 facets on the top slope alone to direct sound waves. It holds your phone in landscape mode, all the while amplifying the sound from the iPhone’s tiny speaker.
It’s also been designed to allow you to charge your iPhone at the same time, since it doesn’t block your charging port, and its tapered opening allows for iPhones with or without cases. The final production models of the Sonastand will come in either a shiny metal finish (shown) or an anodized color finish in black, red, blue, green or yellow.
Through April 20, its designers are raising funds for the production of the Sonastand over on Kickstarter, where the minimum pledge to get one is $39(USD). They’re already almost half way to their goal, so if you pledge, there’s a pretty good chance it’ll get produced.
