Japanese shop den combined its love for video games with the its country’s classic board game shogi by replacing its pieces with ones that look like the Game Boy. The pieces are made of laser cut wood and acrylic. The rank of each piece is shown on its “display.” Sadly, the pieces don’t turn into Nintendo 3DSes when promoted.
I’m not sure if den was actually selling the game – it’s price was a whopping ¥123,456 (~$1,210 USD) – but in any case it’s listed as sold out. Besides, it doesn’t seem to be a practical way to play the game because it makes it hard to discern the ranks of the pieces. Maybe you can make your own version with a variety of gaming systems. But don’t ask folks online which piece should be what rank; you’ll never hear the end of it.
