Washboard Washed up: Service That Planned to Send Quarters for Laundry Pulls Plug

Feel like doing your laundry but happen to be out of quarters? Can’t be bothered to go to the change machine or bank to get those quarters? Then Washboard was conceptualized just for people like you!

Washboard is a monthly service that’ll send you quarters that you can use so that you can do your laundry. Yep, that’s right: for $15, they’ll send you $10 worth of quarters. You can upgrade if you need more quarters to the next tier: $27 for $20 worth of quarters. It sounds absurd, I know.

The project was briefly up on Product Hunt, but they eventually had to pull the plug because the entire concept violated the payment processor’s terms of service. The project couldn’t be moved elsewhere, either, because it violated the terms of service of all those other payment processors as well. Probably just as well, because I don’t know many people who would pay a 50% markup just to get their quarters.
