Ford’s Smartbike Can Warn You Before You Hit a Pothole

Ford has announced its latest smartbike: the MoDe:Flex. The idea behind this concept electric-assist bicycle is that it will warn cyclists of upcoming road damage and potholes using a built-in vibration system. The bike works with an app that comes with an Apple Watch extension that can detect potholes on the road.

Basically, when you are approaching dangerous hazards, you will feel the handlebars vibrate. Ford doesn’t explain whether the software relies on existing data, or if it can scan the road ahead, or is just relying on the fact that potholes are everywhere. No matter how it works, it works and so could save cyclists a headache.

The app provides real-time information on weather, congestion, parking costs, time, traffic, and alternate public transportation, so it’s great for cyclists even in areas where the roads are well serviced.
