This AI-Powered All Terrain Robotic Dog Can Run on Loose Sand

Developed by researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology’s (KAIST) Department of Mechanical Engineering, the RaiBo quadruped robot was designed to be able to tackle any terrain. The robot is even capable of traversing loose sand at around 7 MPH. So, if you thought you were going to be safe from killer robots on the beach, think again.

RaiBo uses a neural network learning system to alter its gait for maximum efficiency and speed on any given terrain, making adjustments in real-time. Further planned training includes the robot calculating how much force it’s applying to its feet while walking and how that force will deform the terrain, making instant adjustments based on those calculations. That’s… pretty advanced.

Possible applications of the robot include exploration and search-and-rescue missions. That all sounds well and good, but if you think these bots aren’t inevitably going to be chasing down human flesh-bags to power the Matrix, clearly, you haven’t seen enough movies.
