At first, I thought this was a joke. Then I checked the calendar and it wasn’t April yet. Turns out, this is very real and even though it seems a bit silly to be talking about airbags for the elderly, I suppose this is a really good idea.

Inspired by a classic YouTube video, The Slow Mo Guys decided to deploy a couple of airbags in microwave ovens so that they could capture the destruction at 2,000 frames per second. It is an awesome idea, because who doesn’t love to watch things getting demolished in slow motion?

People in cars get a LOT of safety features that motorcyclists don’t have access to, like four-wheel traction control and a vehicle that doesn’t tip over without outside intervention. Airbags, however, are something that professional motorcycle racers have had for a few years now.

Bike helmets. Many people don’t like to wear them because they’re big and bulky. And for the vain ones, they cause helmet hair. But to be honest, if it were up to me, I’d rather choose all of the above rather than risk my life by going out on my bike without a helmet on.

For years, Volvo has been at the forefront of automotive safety technology. Wwhile not everything they develop works flawlessly, this invention seems like a really good idea – especially if you plan on playing Grand Theft Auto or Carmageddon in real life and running down any pedestrians.

I’m one of those guys who thinks motorcycles are really cool, but I don’t ride one. I think it’s because I’ve always been convinced that I’d end up killing myself if I tried to negotiate the slick roads and maniac drivers of Chicago in the winter time.

Parents and teachers have taught us at a young age not to “judge a book by its cover” because sometimes, it’s what’s on the inside that counts – and this doesn’t just apply to people or actual books, either.

When I think of airbags, I picture them inside the car. But what if we equipped cars with outer airbags to protect pedestrians? That’s exactly what Toyoda Gosei (an offshoot of Toyota) has done with these prototypes: they’ve equipped cars with camera and radar sensors to detect pedestrians and (presumably) activate the outer airbags to protect anyone within range of the car.

You’re sure to make a fashion statement walking down the street wearing one of these. The Snowpulse Life Bag is a special backpack that’s designed to protect hikers in the event of an avalanche. While it may look ridiculous, I suppose that it’s actually a really good idea if you happen to spend a lot of time walking in the mountains.
