This LEGO arcade diorama brings back some sweet memories for me. I practically grew up in arcades, pumping quarters into these machines. Those were the days when gaming was a more social sport. When a kid could spend a small fortune of his parents’ money on any given afternoon.

At a time when many consider the phones people carry all the time to be the future of gaming, Josh DeBonis and Nik Mikros found success in Killer Queen, despite it being an arcade game that asks for 8 to 10 players and takes up enough space for about seven arcade cabinets.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen a LEGO machine like this. It’s a custom built animatronic coin-operated machine and it is a lovely sight to see it in action. Just put your coin in and watch the little LEGO people come to life.

Arcade games are great fun not just because they’re solid games, but because they’re good at being social games. Just about everything is more fun with friends and beer, and Pac-Man is no exception. The problem is that arcades, especially ones with classic games, can be hard to come by, and trying to play on a keyboard just isn’t the same as having a nice big joystick and some clicky arcade buttons to jab at.

Growing up, nothing in the world made me clean my room faster on a Saturday than the promise of lunch at Chuck E. Cheese. As soon as we got there, I headed straight for the Star Wars arcade game and spent all my tokens in about 10 minutes trying to dominate that game and blow up the Death Star.

Japan’s arcades will soon have a game that requires a more hands-on approach. Sega’s Eederu Sunaba is an augmented reality game that uses sensors and projectors to display virtual landscapes and animals on a sandbox. The landscapes and animals instantly appear based on what you build with the sand.

Last year we drooled over Love Hulten’s R-Kaid-42, a wooden arcade console. Love has a new piece for us to wish for this year. He calls it the R-Kaid-R, a self-contained portable arcade machine. It has an 8″ 800×600 display, a rechargeable battery that lasts up to 8 hours and a beautiful wooden case that makes it look like an artifact from an alternate past.

I don’t know about you, but I love the design and artistry of arcade game cabinets. That’s why I am really digging Mer-Maid Manor. It is just an illustration of an arcade game cabinet, but it hits all the right notes.

I always thought the old TRON arcade machine had the best joystick. There was something about the fighter-jet like control that helped with the sense of immersion. If you’d like to feel like you’re actually driving a lightcycle every time you get in your car, then you might want to try and replicate this.

We’ve heard this story before. A guy gets engaged, reveals his geeky (and usually expensive) obsession to his fiancée, then the fiancée dumps him. It just ain’t right. However, sometimes it is the guy’s fault. It isn’t always the girl being too mean.

Ah, the Mazda Miata. It’s the scourge of autocross and road racing tracks around the world. It has little power, epic handling, and is dirt cheap to repair, making these little convertible sports cars a mainstay for motorsports around the world.
