A sonar-equipped remote-controlled buoy called EMILY (EMergency Integrated Lifesaving lanYard) might someday replace human lifeguards. For now, EMILYs are being used only in Zuma Beach in Malibu, California, but they’ll be watching over 25 more beaches by December.
