Disney Invents a One-legged Robot That Hops Like a Crazy Pogo Stick

Disney Invents a One-legged Robot That Hops Like a Crazy Pogo Stick
Disney’s research branch just revealed a crazy robot that can hop on a single leg. It doesn’t need a tether either, and has an on-board power source and controller. Now they just need to scale it up and give us a cool pogo-stick robot for personal transport. That leg uses a technology called a linear elastic actuator in parallel – or LEAP, which uses both an electromagnetic actuator and two compression springs.

Disney Almost Built a Real-World Myst Island

Disney Almost Built a Real-World Myst Island
Back in the day when I graduated from college the very first thing I did after getting my very first paycheck was run down to Best Buy and purchase a 3DO. It was awesome for the time and the very first video game I played on that console was Myst. That game was beautiful, mysterious, and incredibly frustrating.

Disneyland Testing New Interactive Droids for Star Wars Lands
Disney’s plans for Star Wars extend much further than just milking the property for all it’s worth in movie theaters. The company is also working on converting parts of Disneyland and Walt Disney World into epic Star Wars-themed lands, and now we have word that it’s testing some of the new characters that are designed to interact with guests.

Disney PaperID Turns Paper into Input Devices Using RFID Tags: Fiber Haptic
RFID tags are most often used for tracking or identification. But scientists from Disney Research, University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University have figured out a way to use them to create buttons, knobs and other input devices out of paper.

Disney FaceDirector Combines Two Takes Into One: Scene, Take 1, Version 1.1

Disney FaceDirector Combines Two Takes Into One: Scene, Take 1, Version 1.1
Last October we checked out a fascinating animation technique that transfers facial movements from one person to another in real-time. Disney Research’s FaceDirector on the other hand blends two different takes of an actor’s face into one customizable performance. FaceDirector synchronizes two source performances based on facial cues – the eyebrows, eyes, nose and lips – and the actor’s dialogue.

Disney Scented Candles Smell Like the Haunted Mansion

Disney Scented Candles Smell Like the Haunted Mansion
When I was about ten, my parents took my brother and I to Disney. He was about five and we got into this argument in the elevator of the Haunted Mansion about if the costumed figure standing there was real or a mannequin.

Bizarre Mickey Mouse Head Music Visualizer Thingy Commissioned by Disney

Bizarre Mickey Mouse Head Music Visualizer Thingy Commissioned by Disney
This Mickey Mouse inspired musical sculpture is more than a bit creepy. It looks like someone cut the heads off of Deadmau5 and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and smashed them together. The thing is called the MikeyFon and was commissioned by Disney and built by a Polish firm called PanGenerator. The giant Mickey head has a screen on the front where the eyes would be that shows a colorful visualization of sounds or music the giant ears hear.

Disney’s VertiGo Robot Can Climb Walls

Disney’s VertiGo Robot Can Climb Walls
Disney made a robot and it is not named BB-8. Check out this video demonstration of the VertiGO wall-climbing robot car. It was designed by Disney Research and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

AutoConnect Generates 3D Printable Connectors for Any Two Objects: The Missing Link

AutoConnect Generates 3D Printable Connectors for Any Two Objects: The Missing Link
Custom mounts, docks and other connectors are simple yet impressive demonstrations of 3D printing’s potential. Right now you can either design your own connector or look for existing designs, but a group of researchers have created a third option: have a computer figure it out for you. Made by Yuki Koyama, Shinjiro Sueda, Emma Steinhardt, Takeo Igarashi, Ariel Shamir and Wojciech Matusik, AutoConnect is an application that generates 3D models for a connector.

Disney Heroines as League of Legends Champions: Adorbz Disney Characters

Disney Heroines as League of Legends Champions: Adorbz Disney Characters
Part of the appeal of MOBAs like League of Legends is that they have tons of playable characters. You know who else has tons of characters? Disney. DeviantArt member Elasar Reem turned just a subset of Disney characters into LOL champions.

Disney Creating Cartoon Robots that Could Prowl Its Parks

Disney Creating Cartoon Robots that Could Prowl Its Parks
I worked at Disney World when I was in high school. It was not fun and it was not glamorous. I flipped burgers and sold soft serve ice cream. The cool kids I knew had jobs on rides, and the coolest kids were characters.

Disney Research’s 3D Printer Prints with Fabric: A Whole New World

Disney Research’s 3D Printer Prints with Fabric: A Whole New World
We can now add fabric to the many kinds of 3D printing “ink”, thanks to Disney Research and their partners from Cornell University and Carnegie Mellon University. They developed a printer-laser cutter hybrid that stacks layers of fabric to create an object. Aside from the potential for customization, repairs and affordable small scale production, the printer makes it relatively easy to make soft, flexible and discreet electronics.

Alice in Wonderland Door Knob Lets You into Bedroomland

Alice in Wonderland Door Knob Lets You into Bedroomland
I watched plenty of Disney cartoons growing up and while many of them were sad, I liked most of them. One of the Disney cartoons I hated was Alice in Wonderland. I found that cartoon very creepy with the Cheshire Cat that clearly wanted you dead and a queen that wanted to lop off your head.

This Turtle Robot Creates Works of Art on the Beach

This Turtle Robot Creates Works of Art on the Beach
This is Beachbot, the world’s first autonomous sand art robot. It was developed by ETH Zurich and the Zurich division of Disney Research. Basically, it’s a Disney Mutant Robot Turtle – further proof that Disney wants to take over the world with cuteness.

Funko Frozen Figures Won’t Let Your Wallet Go

Funko Frozen Figures Won’t Let Your Wallet Go
We aren’t very far removed from Frozen playing constantly here at my house. In fact, I am a bit worried that my daughter will revert to only watching Frozen if she walks in while I am writing this.
