We all know Mario is an Italian plumber with overalls and a big black caterpillar mustache. However, most people don’t know the true origin story of Nintendo’s most popular character. As part of its series 8-bit Legacy: The Curious History of Video Games, the guys from Great Big Story sat down with game designer Shigeru Miyamoto to learn about the earliest days of Mario, and how he came up with the character.

I like sword fights as much as the next guy. I mean, maybe I like them more. I’m not into renaissance fairs or LARPing, but I did take fencing way back in the day. I also rather like movies and video games with sword fights because they look cool.

You’ve heard the stories about Atari suffering such poor sales with the E.T. game for the Atari 2600 that they were forced to dump millions of copies into a landfill somewhere. Is it true? There seems to be some debate over this.

When I first heard there was a movie about Donkey Kong a few years back, I thought it was a strange idea. But The King of Kong was actually an awesome movie, loaded with strange characters, and a great study of passionate (and obsessive) personalities.

Mehli Bilgil, a student at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, Germany, created an animated documentary about the history of the Internet. Unlike other documentaries, Mehli Bilgil’s documentary contains no interviews, real world footage or image, not even a single shot of a PC or server.
