The Raspberry Pi and the animated .gif – two of the Internet’s favorite things come together in Otto, a quirky still and video camera. Powered by the Raspberry Pi Compute, Otto has a variety of features, foremost of which is the ability to make .gifs.

What do you do when you procrastinate? Look at cat pictures and GIFs on the web? Really? Why, me too! It seems like a lot of us do nothing but scour the internet for the latest feline-related funnies, so it isn’t really surprising that something like Procatinator actually exists.

We’ve seen a website dedicated to videogame logos and another one obsessed with start screens. Redditor RudeBottie has another similarly niche collection of videogame assets: its devoted to the background scene in fighting games. While it’s nowhere near complete you can still lose hours just staring at the collection, because they’re presented as animated .gifs:

While there have been many different apps that have tried to be what Instagram is to photos but for videos, this new one is backed by Twitter, making it immediately interesting to the Twitterati. Sharing and recording looping vids is nothing new, but the constraints and functions make Vine, which is still a bit buggy, cool to use.

There has been a revival of interest in animated GIFs since you can make some fun stylized animations with them. Some of the more recent stuff is pretty interesting, which is probably why the Cinemagram app was just released for iOS devices.

Despite the fact that the technology is ancient by digital standards, animated GIFs seem to be enjoying a bit of a renaissance. But beyond the thousands of pages of animated GIFs turning up these days on tumblr, there’s now a device which lets you view these primitive animated artworks without the need for a computer at all.

You’ve probably seen the flurry of photos animated thanks to GIFs. It seems old school, but there’s a lot you can do with GIFs. Check out what Vancouver-based French artist Nicolas Sassoon does. Some of these are pretty cool.
