Self-service checkouts are not new in our grocery stores, but Panasonic has improved them in Japan, with a basket system that can detect the items you’re placing inside and then bag them up automatically. The only thing it doesn’t do is ask whether you prefer paper or plastic.

Grocery shopping can be a hassle. There are the crowded aisles, getting in line to pay, then you have to put it all in the car and drive back home. We need a robot to do this for us.

Geeks have been doing all sorts of wild things with Microsoft Kinect sensor since Microsoft launched it. The Kinect for Windows sensor hasn’t been around as long as the original gaming sensor, but it already has one of the most awesome uses I’ve ever seen for anything Microsoft manufactured.
